Turf Fields In Jefferson County

Featured Replies

I’ve heard talk that the Jefferson County school board will install turf fields at a few schools during the off-season. One school that has been mentioned is Fern Creek. Has anyone heard if this is true or not?

There was talk about it earlier in the season but haven’t heard much since then. Seemed was going to depend on budget and figure who would get them first.

JCPS asked each of their members to submit a proposal for why their school should receive a turf field. That was back in the fall. I’d imagine they are in the first steps of deciding. Budgeting and implementation will come later.

Ballard should be a top candidate.

I agree. May as well do that while rebuilding the stadium.

I work in commercial construction estimating. As public jobs (jobs with city/county/state/federal funding), the field renovations for turf would have to be publicly advertised open bids. I can tell you from keeping up with jobs out for bid in the plan rooms that JCPS hasn't put anything out to bid yet.

It would certainly make sense to do so, but as it stands I don't think a turf field is being planned at Ballard while they're redoing the stadium.

5 JCPS football coaching jobs are open right now. 6 jobs turned over last year. 4 turned over the year before that. 8 the year before that. 5 the year before that, and 5 the year before that.

Maybe actually doing something like this could help them not have to hire about a half-dozen new coaches every year.

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with facilities. Too many schools for one, open enrollment and school choice kills, which makes “haves” and “have nots”. Most people have no idea how much effort it takes just to field a team at some of these schools

My top 5 choices for turf fields would be:

1. Ballard (because they're getting a new stadium anyway)

2. Male (their success has earned it)

3. Central (same as Male)

4. Manual (they've been around long enough)

5. Butler ( bring some excitement to Dixie)

I would be good with 2-5 since St.X plays those teams yearly.

Jerry Wyman is probably lobbying for Valley.

How are they doing the rebuild at Ballard? Are they tearing down the old concrete stadium and starting from the ground up?

It's already been demolished. So, yes.

For turf fields, I’ve heard that Jefferson Co will be divided into 4 regions, with 1 school in each region getting a field. Central is one school who is definitely getting one and a good chance Fern Creek will be the other. The other 2 will come from Butler & PRP for the southwest area and between Male & Manual for the other region. 2 fields will be ready for the 2020 season and the other 2 will be ready for the 2021 season. Then the process will be repeated.
