Ryle 50 Highlands 14

I've only seen Ryle play once this year and it was against Boone Co. But from reading this thread it seems that attempting onside kicks is standard procedure for the Raiders. They continued to attempt the onside kick far into the 4th quarter against Boone when the game was well in hand. Boone covered every one of them but it was rather puzzling to me that they would keep doing this. I don't particularly think Ryle's coaches were trying to run up the score but I'm not sure.

 

Can someone from Union shed some light on this? It could be just a philosophy of the coaches. Is it a strategy Ryle regularly employs? Were they practicing in case it is needed in a future game, say for instance, against SK? Their kicker is quite capable of kicking it deep. Were they trying to avoid Boone's return men who can both take it to the house? I am not disturbed by this but find it interesting that it was done in the Boone game so often and apparently against Highlands, as well.

 

We have had trouble covering kicks. IE. the Henry Clay game. If we kick it and the average return is to the 40 or better ( TD ) why not kick the onside? At least you have a chance to get the ball back or your start D at the same or close to the same field position without the threat of a long return. Running up the score is not the point. Looks like the coach is trying to strengthen a weakness with un-ordinary tactics.

Ryle coaches exorcising some butt hurt demons from seasons past as they on side kick with a 28 point lead and then go for 2 at 34-0 to get the running clock early. Not that I blame them for getting in their licks on HHS while they are able, but Highlands will go back to being Highlands fairly soon and then that little kid down the street will be taking down the big boys once again.

You tried to put up 70 but didn't make it. The hook and latter was well executed, but no need for it. Ryle should have saved that play for when they needed it down the road. I don't think I've never seen Highlands use a trick play, definitely not when they were up by 40. Birds didn't play good enough to win, enjoy it while you can. :wave:

 

You realize the hook and latter was the second or third series of the game, right? If a team doesn't give their boundry corner help when they have trips to the field, they'll run it again. And guess what...it'll work. They spotted a weakness in Highlands defense. Does it matter how they scored? They weren't trying to trick anyone. Highlands just needed to play more sound defense.

It negates a return, and of course well take the ball back if you don't bend over and fall on it. Hard to score when your D is on the field! Who said we have to give the ball back? Some coaches never punt. Is that against the fairness rules? I like it it's good chess play. If the front line has to stay up in case of the onside they don't get back to block either if we kick it deep. Keeps 'em guessing.

I was there but it was a long time ago. I've seen so many games since then. My gut says yes. I believe they were running 9's on us till the end. Same year HHS had that kicker, I believe the Collinsworth kid that was kicking balls out of the end of the endzone?
