Clyde
If nothing else' date=' when the person returns they are no longer eligible for all the benefits that would be spent on a regular employee, so that has to be a big chunk of savings.[/quote'] So Mike will not have benefits like health insurance? Jumper_Dad
You collect your full pension and whatever salary for the new job. The savings comes in that the county no longer pays retirement in for the sheriff and may not be paying health insurance either. The law change mentioned earlier I believe precludes him from building a second "State" pension. Look at how many retired State Troopers are currently Sheriffs or Police Chiefs, exact same as this. Jumper_Dad
So Mike will not have benefits like health insurance? He will have them through his retirement probably.
doubledeuce
So Mike will not have benefits like health insurance? From what I understand is that he will have his health insurance that is part of the retirement.
Twotoplace
He will have them through his retirement probably. Channel 5 report last night noted that upon returning on Jan. 4, sheriff will be paid as beginning sheriff ($90,000 plus) instead of veteran sheriff ($100 grand plus). But, obviously, his total take-home will be higher with the double-dipping. And when he returns on Jan. 4, would he not be eligible to go back on regular health-care insurance? One would think so. He'll again be a full-time sheriff and not a contract employee.
elmer1
So that in itself is a big savings to the tax payer in Boone county

Clyde
This isn't a big deal to me. Boone County would be paying a new sheriff anyway even if Mike stayed retired. No real extra cost.

Love to hear your response You seem to be in the know, so let's quit playing the blame-the-media game. What's the full story here with this double-dipping? It certainly would be nice to have someone like the judge exec or county attorney or the sheriff explain what's going on, but that ain't gonna happen because everything's hush-hush in Boone County. Heck, Boone County couldn't even explain why they had to put down the police dog last week.

This happens across the state and is no different from anyone else retiring from one job and getting their pension and then going out and getting another job. This is all much to do about nothing. You're right. This is not a big story. However, if this indeed is "much to do about nothing," then why did the Boone County judge-exec go on TV last night and say something like, "Aw shucks, the sheriff is just taking some time off bla bla bla" when he obviously knew what was going on here. Moore appointed the sheriff's one-month replacement, fer cryin' out loud. Why not just tell the truth instead of trying to mislead the public with some song-and-dance? theguru
His health insurance will be free with his retirement so taking what his department offers doesn't make much sense unless the plan is superior.
