MentschTrachtGottLacht
...... Injuries like this (to the face, in cop in "Hangover" voice) always make me think of Dickie Thon. Loved that dude...never the same.

MentschTrachtGottLacht
Wille Blair (from Paintsville) took one to the chin, pitched well after. I wasn't implying it was impossible, just pointing out that Dickie Thon is always my first thought. A lot of dudes have come back from a line-drive / pitch to the face and been okay, Dickie just wasn't that lucky.
Clyde
Check out this picture of the staples in Chapman's head (and don't let the young lady on the right distract you). Aroldis Chapman Has a Head Full of Staples | The Big Lead
98NCCalum
Sounds like he was very lucky. When does baseball go the way of softball and have face masks for pitchers? My playing days ended last year but I ptiched my last 3 seasons wearing a mask. Only got hit in it once, but that hit would have killed me, I have no doubt. It was so hard I had literally 0 time to react. I pitched again after that, but was jumpy. It's not the reason I'm finished, but still. Very scary. AverageJoesGym
At least the Chapman injury will not have any effect on the Reds season. From your posts we all know that the closer means nothing...
hja1224
My son and I just returned from Arizona and were sitting a few rows up by first base side. It was scary seeing this is live action. It brought back memories when I was coaching first base and Tanner Norton smoked one into the pitchers head when he was 12 years old. The bats were the lively ones and I think the mound was about 54 feet. They had to have an ambulance come on the field to get the kid and luckily he was ok. Just a weird feeling seeing someone hit that hard in the head. Chapman was wild as heck. He not only walked four batters in this inning but he overthrew the catcher in the bullpen multiple times and hit the backstop when he was warming up before play began. Hopefully he comes back healthy and it doesn't affect him mentally.

Science Friction
That's pretty amazing. Back in the 50's when the Indians' Herb Score got hit, he missed the entire season. Maybe the injuries aren't exactly the same, but still... Not only that but he was never the same after getting hit.
NKY Bandit
Reports from last night in Dayton were that Chapman hit 101 twice on the gun, along with several at 99 or 100 with 2 K's.
ColonelCrazy
Chapman has said this isn't/won't affect him at all. I'm excited to get the Cuban Missle back.
nkypete
I look forward to the domino effect - that is, having Broxton in the eighth inning instead of Marshall or Hoover.
NKY Bandit
Anything that takes Hoover further away from pitching in critical situations makes the reds better. Still wish we'd explored the Stanton for Chapman deal but glad he's on his way back. Reds could definitely use him.
