Closed schools that you miss

What year was that Philip? Did Maysville play football until the school closed or had the dropped it prior to closing?

1980 was the last team.

You can't mention Maysville basketball without remembering one of the most interesting people I ever met: Arthur "Pumpkin" Griffen

Amen to that. Punk was a good friend of mine. People used to call him from local drinking establishments to settle bets about local sports.

1973 Stanford Wildcats.jpg

This was the last team at Stanford High School in 1973. Stanford consolidated with Crab Orchard, Hustonville, McKinney and Waynesburg Memorial to form Lincoln County High School in 1974. Stanford was the only school that played football prior to consolidation.

I remember Catholic Country Day in Louisville. It evolved into Aquinas Prep before closing. I can't recall for sure whether they were just grades 1-8 or 1-12.

A little trivia. If I get any of the particulars wrong, someone correct me. Up until 1973, the winner of the old Louisville City region played the winner of the Jefferson County region for the 3A title. Only one team from the city region made the playoffs. In 1973, the city region was split into two districts, with the winner of each district playing for the regional title. Bishop David won the regular season match with Trinity. Under the 1972 alignment, only Bishop David would have advanced to the playoffs. Under the 1973 setup, Trinity won their district and Bishop David won theirs. Trinity won in the playoffs and went on to the 3A title, beating a Southern team with a quarterback named Phil Simms. Whatever happened to him? I thought he might have a chance to play after high school.

I graduated in '72 from Southern but came back for that game. Phil (Whitey) Simms was a baseball team mate of mine in Little League for several years. They made him play up a level because he was so good. He could hit the ball a mile and pitched with a lot of stuff. I remember Southern got out to a 7-0 lead on a long run by Ransom Monroe, but that was it, Trinity dominated from there.. Believe it or not Southern did not throw the ball very much, hence why Phil ended up at Morehead where I also went and ran into him occassionally. It is weird seeing him do NFL commentary because I remember him most when he was 12-15 years old and just as goofy as the rest of us.

Whitesburg - great girls basketball....

M.C. Napier - ditto

Bishop David Falcons - very, very good football teams.

Shelbyville Red Devils - some of the greatest 8th region boys basketball teams before dissolving into Shelby County HS in the mid 70s.

Before my time, but the Junction City Red Devils. Junction had better success in basketball than in football. Junction, Perryville, Forkland, and Parksville all merged to form Boyle County back in the 60's.

The 3 point stance has changed a little. lol

Don Gullett. Don ended up playing professional baseball, but many said he was a better football player then baseball player.

Don Gullett, who played professional baseball with the Cincinnati Reds, went to McKell High Schoool. He holds the record for most points scored in a football game of 72 pts (11 TD's and 6 extra points). McKell merged with Wurtland High School (the Warriors) and Greenup High School (the Tigers) in 1972 to form Greenup County High School (the Musketeers)

Is your father in this picture @quickslick? I knew I had seen it before...my mother graduated from Falmouth that year (1967).

My dad's first team at Boyle(1969) only had one loss and that was to Stanford. I also saw the Rebels play in Stanford one night in the early 70s.

In 1969, the Rebels also played at Greensburg and Lebanon (not sure if it was home or away). Greensburg was the opener. I was four years old and I still remember being at the game.

Harrodsburg is one for me. I always loved playing in a district with them and at least while I was in school we sort of shared a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" sentiment towards Danville.

I also miss Cumberland and Evarts in Harlan County. Watching games there was like stepping into a time machine and there's really not a more beautiful place to enjoy a Friday evening in the Fall.

That 1969 Stanford team was district champions and was set to host Bardstown in the first round of the playoffs. The game was moved to the "new stadium" at Garrard County to accommodate the crowds (there might have been some weather reasons too). Bardstown won the game.

Tompkinsville High School Bears

1982 lost to Paris in semi finals and had a few playoff battles with Russellville in late 70's early 80's. Consolidated with Gamaliel High School in May 1985 to form Monroe County Falcons.

I sure miss old Evarts High School in Harlan County. I miss those rivalry games with Harlan Ind. Evarts, Cumberland and Cawood have consolidated in to Harlan Co and now the program is in complete chaos. When I look on the field I can't believe this all that is left of these 3 schools....plus Lynch was a powerhouse when I was in high school. They consolidated in the early 80's with Cumberland. Every aspect of this county is going downhill quickly with no end in sight.
