Maysville High School.

Not much of a football school but we did have some basketball success.

I was on this last team from Maysville.

What year was that Philip? Did Maysville play football until the school closed or had the dropped it prior to closing?

Before my time, but the Junction City Red Devils. Junction had better success in basketball than in football. Junction, Perryville, Forkland, and Parksville all merged to form Boyle County back in the 60's.

I thought you were going to put up a picture of that great Midget Green Team from Junction City. :lol2:

Newport Catholic and Our Lady of Providence merged together for the 1983/84 school year, forming Newport Central Catholic.......my senior year.

How can you forget St. Thomas????

Don Gullett. Don ended up playing professional baseball, but many said he was a better football player then baseball player.

If he was a better football player than baseball he would be in the Hall of Fame. If he hadn't hurt his arm he might have been one of the all-time great pitchers in baseball.

You can't mention Maysville basketball without remembering one of the most interesting people I ever met: Arthur "Pumpkin" Griffen

I'm not sure what you mean, but you have to play the sport in the pros to be in the Hall of Fame. Obviously, the people who said that were speaking of high school sports. But, scoring 72 points in one game is pretty good, I don't care who you are playing.

Jesse Stuart High School,

Louisville

Also Westport High School which is now Westport Middle School, Durrert High School where Male High School moved to and Thomas Jefferson High School. I canot remember who is there now.

Anyone else remember William Grant High in Covington and some of the really good roundball teams they had with players like Tom Thacker and George Stone? Guess I just dated myself on that one.

I believe Tom Thacker is the only person ever to have been on NCAA, NBA and ABA champion teams.

Thomas Jefferson High School, like Westport, is a middle school now I believe.

What about "My Old Kentucky Home High School?" If memory serves they were State runners up at least one year, maybe two. Back in the 60's I believe.
Prolific half back Herbie Phelps played there if I'm not mistaken.
I had never thought of it that way. Makes a lot of sense as to why East Ridge has had such a tough time getting off the ground. And to be honest, Elkhorn City's best days were well past them by the time their school closed. They hadn't won a playoff game since 1975.

Honestly, that saga is a common one throughout the state with large, consolidated county schools.

Who knows the history of St. Charles High School in Marion County? I notice that they still have an elementary school by that name in the Marion County school system. Was the high school a Catholic school?

I believe so, but I'm not 100 percent sure. There was also a St. Augustine and St. Francis, I think. But St. Francis is the name of an actual town and may not have been a parochial school. I think there's something like five different high schools listed on the wall in the Roby Dome there, all of them having closed down between about 1963-1970.

Earlington and for a very selfish reason.

Would love to play them again and beat the tar out of them in Basketball for beating CovCath on a last shot, as the buzzer went off, to have them, instead of us, win the Sweet Sixteen in 1967.

The link below is from a 1962 list in the KHSAA Athlete magazine. It appears there was Lebanon and St. Augustine in town, St. Charles out in the county, and then St. Francis in Loretto. Augustine, Charles and Francis are listed as having "sisters" as principals, which probably answers the question of parochial or not.
