Closed schools that you miss

Featured Replies

Two other major now-defunct Catholic schools in Louisville were in Louisville's South End: Bishop David High School for boys and Angela Merici High School for girls. I know precious little about them but they merged into what is now Louisville Holy Cross in 1984. It's one of only two co-ed Catholic high schools in Louisville (Holy Angels).

This is a football forum but I'd be remiss (and in trouble with Rockmom) if I didn't also mention Holy Rosary High School. It opened in 1867 and educated young women in Louisville for a stunning 135 years before declining enrollment forced it to close its doors in 2002.

While Bishop David did not have the legendary names of Schnellenberger, Norton and the Golden Boy, Bishop David had some pretty good football teams. Pretty sure they won a few state titles.

Bishop David never won a title. Their best finish was in 1977 when they lost to Trinity in the Jefferson County final. Trinity beat Greenup County to win AAAA outright the next week. The only other playoff game Bishop David won was a first rounder against Iroquois in 1980.

Well, AM didn't have a football team either. :p

I miss all three, BD, AM and HRA. Along with DeSales, the South End had a great Catholic School presence at one time.

McKell High school with the player that scored the most points in a single KY high school game.

No love for Reidland's run to the regional final in 1999? I think it was the only good football team they ever had!

I missed this by a year. It was 2000. Sorry!

What about "My Old Kentucky Home High School?" If memory serves they were State runners up at least one year, maybe two. Back in the 60's I believe.

That's a good one. Herbie Phelps was a star there back in the mid-60s. District champions in '63, '64 and '65, with the 1965 team losing in the state finals to Lloyd Memorial. They eventually consolidated into Nelson County High School.

From a football standpoint I always thought Elkhorn City deserved a better fate. 1A EC consolidated with 1A Millard and 1A Feds Creek to produce East Ridge High School. Neither Feds Creek or Millard had football programs at the time of consolidation and when the new school combined it was a 3A enrollment. ER has never been able to really compete with the larger schools and their feeder system remains weak to this day (though coaching turnover certainly has played a part). Had Elkhorn City remained as it's own HS I wonder if they would still be competitive to this day? EC had a good team or two even back in the 90's prior to consolidation.

I had never thought of it that way. Makes a lot of sense as to why East Ridge has had such a tough time getting off the ground. And to be honest, Elkhorn City's best days were well past them by the time their school closed. They hadn't won a playoff game since 1975.

Anyone else remember William Grant High in Covington and some of the really good roundball teams they had with players like Tom Thacker and George Stone? Guess I just dated myself on that one.

Was Grant a pre-desegregation school? I don't remember seeing that name much after the mid-60s or so.

Don Gullett. Don ended up playing professional baseball, but many said he was a better football player then baseball player.

I remember reading that Grant was the only Negro High in Northern Kentucky when it opened in the 1930's and serviced all three No. Ky. counties but it was in the center of the Negro section of Covington in the 60's and down to around 60-70 students. Somewhere in the late 60's or early 70's it was closed and rolled into Covington Holmes. Being a white kid from Ft. Thomas it was great playing games down by the floodwall against these talented black kids. Didn't take me very long to realize basketball wasn't going to be my career. Had the same problem on the Newport playgrounds with guys like Eugene Britton and Charlie and Lester Pate from Newport High from Newport High. If you played pick-up games to win this wasn't the place to be in the early to mid 60's but me and a couple of other white guys who were very good players at Newport still talk about those times whenever I get back to No. Kentucky. Always amazed me how back then black and white kids could play against each other, have fun and respect each other--maybe we should have been running the country instead of the adults.

If my wife hadn't moved to Maysville as a child, she would have been in McKell's final graduating class.

Coaching turnover and administrative support has definitely been a problem at ER. EC's football success ran in cycles. I graduated in 1979 and played for the great Jack Hall. EC was ranked #1 in 1980 at one point but some mid-season injuries hurt them and they fell back. Miss my old high school and visit back there as often as I can.

Jesse Stuart High School,

Louisville
