Closed schools that you miss

Featured Replies

Anyone else remember William Grant High in Covington and some of the really good roundball teams they had with players like Tom Thacker and George Stone? Guess I just dated myself on that one.

There's a lot of history there. With segregation not all of it is so great. However it did produce some of the most well know African Americans in KY.

Although this is a football thread, the first entry said we could talk about teams we miss in either football or basketball. So . . .

Having grown up in Western Kentucky, I miss the pre-consolidation schools in Muhlenberg County. Central City, Greensboro, Drakesboro, Graham, Hughes-Kirk, Bremen and Muhlenberg Central all took basketball very seriously and tended to be very competitive. It was always an adventure to play one of those teams in their home gym - a good crowd, and you never quite had the feeling you were getting a fair shake from the officials. I am sure that was just in my head, though.

Is your father in this picture @quickslick? I knew I had seen it before...my mother graduated from Falmouth that year (1967).

Yep ... sure is ... #82 .

My Dad was actually in the first graduating class at Pendleton County (and didn't get to play football his senior year).

Another hint ... My Dad's grandfather, father and uncle owned the Chevy dealership right over the bridge on the left and the hotel right across the street.

My great grandmother lived on the hill right up from Pendleton County high school for years.

My Mom and Dad met at the Falmouth Dairy Queen (Mom is originally from Dayton, OH ... but her cousins lived--and still live in Falmouth--one of which died in a bad car accident in the early/mid 80's ... and one of the others is one of the best female golfers in the area).

Your Mom may know my Uncle Mike better than my Dad ... he graduated around that time ... he passed away nearly 2 years ago.

I am sure that they know each other ... if I had a dollar for every time someone randomly walked up to me ... and asked if I was my father's son .. I would be rich, rich, rich! (Which is something that is really cool about people from Falmouth).

Bardstown and Nelson Co. is rich with these places.

I live a block away from Spalding Hall. That's the main site of the Ky Bourbon Festival activities as well as the home of the Oscar Getz Whiskey Museum and The Rickhouse, one of the finer bourbon bars in the US.

Spalding Hall has had many functions over the years, as a college and even for a time as a Civil War hospital. It was the home of St. Joe Prep until its closure in 1968. "Undefeated since 1968" is the motto of the alumni club that still meets. Jeff Van Note played for SJP.

I'm just a few blocks away from the Old Kentucky Home HS campus, which is now used by the city and county schools. They went to the state finals in 1965, the first local team to make it that far. Bardstown won state in 1967 in its first trip.

Not sure if the soccer field behind the old school — where Bethlehem teams now practice — is where the old football field was.

Did Bloomfield HS have football? I go by that old school frequently as well.

I also drive the country roads quite frequently, including when I make occasional visits to Frankfort to meet up with an old buddy for lunch. I always take old US 62, which goes right past Western Anderson HS. Still remember the interminable bus ride there in HS, and wondering why the hell Anderson Co. was in the 8th Region. Every bit of 2 1/2 hours from Warsaw by bus.

I pass by Western Anderson all the time. It's really sad to see it in the shape it's in now. Though not an Anderson Co native, I still hear fond stories of the old school from locals. I think it consolidated with Anderson Co. in the mid 80's and served as the west end elementary school up till about 10 years or so ago. Would love for it to still be around, though they didn't have football I have heard they and Anderson Co. used to really have some battles on the basketball court.

I know some are repeated but the schools I miss seeing are Harrodsburg, Maysville, Richmond Madison, Paris Western, Georgetown, Elkhorn City and Mt. Sterling!

It seems like its 2 1/2 hours from Lawrenceburg to Western Anderson. :lol2:

I don't recall them ever having teams but I could be wrong.

In Fort Thomas there was St. Thomas High School. now is just a elem/ middle school. They did not have a football team, but they did have some great basketball teams. I believe Highlands/NCC chocked out the high school attendance.

What about "My Old Kentucky Home High School?" If memory serves they were State runners up at least one year, maybe two. Back in the 60's I believe.

Back in mid 60's had a back named Herbie Phelps that led state in scoring and rushing. Suspect he is still high on all-time lists?

Don Gullett. Don ended up playing professional baseball, but many said he was a better football player then baseball player.

Another memory! Think he scored 11 TDs and 6 extra points in one game. He was a beast!

If he was a better football player than baseball he would be in the Hall of Fame. If he hadn't hurt his arm he might have been one of the all-time great pitchers in baseball.

See post #102 . Do not want to be repetitive.

For me it is Elkhorn City (Dated a girl from down there and that is how I got connected with Pike County. Whitesburg, I watch them battle Lawrence County in the playoffs.

Two schools come to my mind. First MMI, which went out of business multiple times. In 1969 (with 21 players), they upset Bryan Station 19-6. It was their homecoming game and they dressed over 100. They were rated #1 in state, and had Harry Sykes at QB, backed up by Doug Flynn, and I believe Frank Lemaster at LB, with multiple other D1 signees.

MMI had Irvine sideline capes on they had purchased on the cheap when Irvine either merged or dropped football?
