Closed schools that you miss

Featured Replies

After reading the Mercer County Titans article on here, this question popped in my head.

So what are some schools that closed or consolidated with other schools that you miss seeing play football or other sports?

I miss Harrodsburg. It always seemed like football and basketball games between Garrard and Harrodsburg were the biggest thing in the world. And even though they nearly always beat us, it was almost always a great game.

Harrodsburg was a great rivalry for area teams. From about 1976 to 1982 Boyle vs. Harrodsburg was a must see football game. No love lost between either schools. And the talent the Pioneers had was really remarkable during the 70's.

If memory serves the scores those year were:

1976: 21-14 Boyle (Rebels scored on last play of the game)

1977: 60-0 Harrodsburg (Nicky Yeast and Gus Parks)

1978: 17-0 Boyle

1979: 6-0 in OT Boyle

1980: 27-0 Boyle

1981: 46-19 Boyle

1982: 20-7 Boyle

1983: 10-7 Harrodsburg (Donald Smith's run began)

Now that is a good one ....

I was just looking at a team football picture (of my father's) ... it has to be from one of the last few teams for Falmouth

Hopefully there's someone on here that remembers Flaget. They closed their doors long before I was ever around, but from everything I've heard, they were a heckuva school.

Long before there was St. Xavier vs. Trinity, there was St. Xavier vs. Flaget.

That place held on as long as it could until neighborhood demographics finally did it in. Its alumni are numerous and still faithful to the old school.

Flaget also produced the one and only Heisman winner from Kentucky.

Not to mention collegiate All-American, national championship coach and absolute legend...

I love learning about past teams/schools.

So for those who know, why did these schools close? Which schools did they consolidate with? What is the name of the new school?

Thanks.

Bishop Flaget High School did not consolidate, it was simply forced to close its doors and is now an apartment building. When it first opened, the Shawnee neighborhood it called home was filled with Irish- and German-Catholic families. By the 1970s, that simply wasn't the case any longer as most had moved to the suburbs in the South and East Ends of Louisville. A school with an enrollment of over 1,000 in the 1950s graduated only 65 students in its final year, 1974. In that final year, the school went co-ed and absorbed the students from the West End's girls Catholic school, Loretto HS, which had closed the previous year.

It's strange, as big a cultural impact as the school had on this city, it operated for just 32 years, from 1942 until 1974.

Truth

Two other major now-defunct Catholic schools in Louisville were in Louisville's South End: Bishop David High School for boys and Angela Merici High School for girls. I know precious little about them but they merged into what is now Louisville Holy Cross in 1984. It's one of only two co-ed Catholic high schools in Louisville (Holy Angels).

This is a football forum but I'd be remiss (and in trouble with Rockmom) if I didn't also mention Holy Rosary High School. It opened in 1867 and educated young women in Louisville for a stunning 135 years before declining enrollment forced it to close its doors in 2002.

East Hardin was a heck of a program up until they merged with West Hardin before the '90 season to form what is now Central Hardin. East Hardin had a great team their last season in '89. They made it to the AAA State-Semis vs. Paducah Tilghman.

IMO, there are many rural/county schools out there now that were hurt by consolidation as far as football goes. School became bigger, but still only get kids from the lone town/football playing school in the county pre merger. Translation, you have a lot of 2A, 3A and even some 4A "county" schools out there who are still actually 1A football programs when you talk about the pool of kids they actually draw from. Fact.
