I know Lex Cath was formed when St. Catherine's and Lexington Latin merged in the 50's. Newport Central Catholic is also a merged school, created when Providence and Newport Catholic merged together in the 70's. LaSallette was an all-girls Catholic school in Covington that closed in the late 60's or early 70's.

A few other now-defunct Catholic high schools around Kentucky:

Visitation Academy - Georgetown, KY

Mount Saint Joseph - Daviess County, KY

Ursuline Academy - Louisville, KY

Loretto High School - Louisville, KY

St. Joe's Prep - Bardstown, KY

Former High Schools - Now Grade School Only:

St. Camillus - Corbin, KY

Our Lady Of The Mountains - Paintsville, KY

St. Agatha - Winchester, KY

Harrodsburg is the first school that comes to mind. They had a rich football tradition and "Harrodsburg" was one of those smalltown names that were synonymous with KY HS Football like (Danville, Mayfield, Bardstown, Pikeville)

Whitesburg and Cumberland are other schools I miss. They had some very stout teams even up to the point of their collective consolidations and took a lot of pride in their schools. As Cumberland went, so to did the "Redskins" mascot. In our PC Culture it was one of the last "derogatory" mascots I could recall (aside form the Washington Redskins which defies logic).

There were some schools in Johnson and Floyd County that were gone before my time that had some of the coolest mascots of all time:

Hellier Hellcats

Van Lear Bank Mules

McDowell Daredevils

Wayland Wasps

Martin Purple Flash

This school will always be a little special to me.

I dated a girl from there and that is how I have come to be so much of a fan of the area.

Hellier Hellcats

Hellier was actually in Pike County, down roughly in the Elkhorn City area of the county if I remember correctly.

From a football standpoint I always thought Elkhorn City deserved a better fate. 1A EC consolidated with 1A Millard and 1A Feds Creek to produce East Ridge High School. Neither Feds Creek or Millard had football programs at the time of consolidation and when the new school combined it was a 3A enrollment. ER has never been able to really compete with the larger schools and their feeder system remains weak to this day (though coaching turnover certainly has played a part). Had Elkhorn City remained as it's own HS I wonder if they would still be competitive to this day? EC had a good team or two even back in the 90's prior to consolidation.

This is the first year for McCracken Co. It absorbed Reidland, Lone Oak and Heath. Heath had success in 1 and 2A ball in the 70's and 80's with a state title in 86 and a runner up in 75. Lone Oak has 2 runner ups the first in 07 and the second in 2009 in 2OT's to Boyle County in a game that they should have never let get away. Irony in all this is that Jack Haskins coached the Heath 75 runner up and both Lone Oak runner up teams in 07 and 09. He is now the head coach at McCracken County.

I didn't realize Lone Oak was no more. Alma mater of Kenny Perry. I always thought that was one of the cooler high school names in the state.

No love for Reidland's run to the regional final in 1999? I think it was the only good football team they ever had!

Forgot about the Wayland Wasps.....lots of basketball traditon in some of these schools.

Maysville High School.

What about "My Old Kentucky Home High School?" If memory serves they were State runners up at least one year, maybe two. Back in the 60's I believe.

Long before there was St. Xavier vs. Trinity, there was St. Xavier vs. Flaget.

That place held on as long as it could until neighborhood demographics finally did it in. Its alumni are numerous and still faithful to the old school.

Flaget is the only school I know of that can say its winning record against Trinity is safe :lol2:

I sometimes wonder if Flaget did not move to follow demographics like St. X did due to Archbishop Floroesh not wanting them to move or they Xavier Brothers who ran Flaget were just stubborn and didn't want to move?

I know some St. X alum had heartburn when it moved but I think they saw what happened with Flaget and just saw it as inevitable.

Trinity opening in the east end much closer to where the population was moving to may have been what drained Flaget of its enrollment. Parents in the Hikes Point and further East areas probably just could not justify the long ride to Louisville's West End when Trinity was such a short drive away.
