Closed schools that you miss

Bishop Flaget High School did not consolidate, it was simply forced to close its doors and is now an apartment building. When it first opened, the Shawnee neighborhood it called home was filled with Irish- and German-Catholic families. By the 1970s, that simply wasn't the case any longer as most had moved to the suburbs in the South and East Ends of Louisville. A school with an enrollment of over 1,000 in the 1950s graduated only 65 students in its final year, 1974. In that final year, the school went co-ed and absorbed the students from the West End's girls Catholic school, Loretto HS, which had closed the previous year.

It's strange, as big a cultural impact as the school had on this city, it operated for just 32 years, from 1942 until 1974.

Great info. Much appreciated on this end.

Two other major now-defunct Catholic schools in Louisville were in Louisville's South End: Bishop David High School for boys and Angela Merici High School for girls. I know precious little about them but they merged into what is now Louisville Holy Cross in 1984. It's one of only two co-ed Catholic high schools in Louisville (Holy Angels).

This is a football forum but I'd be remiss (and in trouble with Rockmom) if I didn't also mention Holy Rosary High School. It opened in 1867 and educated young women in Louisville for a stunning 135 years before declining enrollment forced it to close its doors in 2002.

More great information. But, I have to ask, I don't recall seeing anything about this Holy Angels school you refer to ever on a KHSAA site. Do they have athletics?

That's a good one. Herbie Phelps was a star there back in the mid-60s. District champions in '63, '64 and '65, with the 1965 team losing in the state finals to Lloyd Memorial. They eventually consolidated into Nelson County High School.

Thought of them because Boyle lost to them in the '65 playoffs by a TD.

Who knows the history of St. Charles High School in Marion County? I notice that they still have an elementary school by that name in the Marion County school system. Was the high school a Catholic school?

St Thomas High School in Fort Thomas. Still is a grade school, but the high school closed in the mid 70's.

Oh....let's not forget St. Thomas high school in Ft. Thomas. I'll bet we've got a St. Thomas graduate or two here on BGP.

Great minds, sir.

They're not KHSAA members. They play in a statewide league of small private schools.

Before my time, but the Junction City Red Devils. Junction had better success in basketball than in football. Junction, Perryville, Forkland, and Parksville all merged to form Boyle County back in the 60's.

Bishop David never won a title. Their best finish was in 1977 when they lost to Trinity in the Jefferson County final. Trinity beat Greenup County to win AAAA outright the next week. The only other playoff game Bishop David won was a first rounder against Iroquois in 1980.

A little trivia. If I get any of the particulars wrong, someone correct me. Up until 1973, the winner of the old Louisville City region played the winner of the Jefferson County region for the 3A title. Only one team from the city region made the playoffs. In 1973, the city region was split into two districts, with the winner of each district playing for the regional title. Bishop David won the regular season match with Trinity. Under the 1972 alignment, only Bishop David would have advanced to the playoffs. Under the 1973 setup, Trinity won their district and Bishop David won theirs. Trinity won in the playoffs and went on to the 3A title, beating a Southern team with a quarterback named Phil Simms. Whatever happened to him? I thought he might have a chance to play after high school.

That's an awesome picture. I have some game scores from the old days of Lancaster/Junction City and Lancaster/Perryville games. I never came across Parksville playing football. Is that correct?

Since pictures are popping up .... here is a football team picture for one of the last teams at Falmouth High School .... IMG_0251.jpg

To my knowledge Parksville and Forkland had no football team. I remember hearing that Perryville won the 8-man State Title in football.

I don't know if there was even an official 8-man tournament way back then, but there was the Bluegrass Conference, which included Perryville, Camp Dick, Paint Lick, Mount Vernon, Berea, Eminence and maybe a couple others. I've come across some articles about the champions of the conference.

I know there was also an 8-man league called the Barren River Conference (or something similar) that included schools in and around the Bowling Green/south central Kentucky area. Perhaps their champions played each other?
