article 10th Region Recap and Rankings - 1/2/17

Lots of holiday action for most of the teams in the 10th. The region's top-ranked squad did not disappoint and managed to distance itself even further from the rest of the pack. This week will see most area small schools participating in the 10th Region All-A tournament. I still believe that any of 6 or 7 teams can catch fire and make a late-season run to Rupp, but right now it appears to be Campbell County's to lose. Without further ado...

1. Campbell County (12-1, 3-1 region). The Camels ran their winning streak to ten as the captured the Lloyd tournament trophy. First was a 78-46 win over Newport with Cole Hegyi and Tanner Clos leading the scoring parade. Hegyi and Garren Bertsch each had 17/7 performances in a 69-52 win over Conner in the next contest. Finally, it was Bertsch pouring in 20 as the Camels prevailed over Woodford County by the score of 59-33. Campbell faces Mason County and Bishop Brossart at home this week.

The number 2,3 and 4 teams are pretty much interchangeable at this point in time; and things might shake out by week's end. For now, the rankings stay where they were last week.

2. Scott (10-4, 4-0 region). Scott started off on the wrong foot, dropping a 72-50 decision to South Laurel. However, they righted the ship with three straight wins - 72-61 over Sheldon Clark, 90-75 over Manual and a 72-71 cliffhanger against Muhlenberg County. Jake Ohmer was on fire the last three games - 20/13, 24, and an eye-popping 32/8/9. This week finds the Eagles playing host to Holmes, then traveling to Simon Kenton.

3. Clark County (8-6, 3-1 region). The Cardinals split 4 games at the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic ast week. 5 players hit double figures in 1 77-46 romp over Breathitt County. 74-60 and 62-52 losses to Lexington Catholic and Perry Central followed; then a 66-56 win over Fayette (GA). Junior swingman Ryan Cooper hit double figures in all four games. Clark hosts 40th district rival Paris in a key matchup, then travels to Madison Southern and Russell to close out the week.

4. Paris (9-6, 4-1 region). Paris was the only 10th-region team to play 5 games last week, all in the Lexington Catholic tourney. The Hounds won the first three contests; the highlight being a Jekobi Wells game-winner against Fayette County (GA). Coach Brooks' squad dropped the final two contests to host Lexington Catholic and Lafayette. Tomorrow's contest at Clark County should be a good one.

5. Mason County (9-5, 4-2 region). The Royals won their first two matchups in Mount Sterling before falling in a big way to Lexington Christian in the final. Leevi Dunaway scored 27 and 22 while Jaylen Lofton added 21 and 16 in wins over Boyle County. Isaiah Garrison's minutes were limited as he nursed an ankle injury, and big man Dalton Perkins suffered the same fate last week. Mason travels to Campbell County, then hosts 9th region for Holmes on Saturday.

6. Pendleton County (7-6, 2-2 region). The Wildcats rebounded nicely last week after an opening-round 55-58 loss to 11-2 Collins; with super soph Dontaie Allen pouring in 26. Allen rested in the 90-73 win over East Jessamine, with Mason Dennie and Grant Walsh scoring 23 and 22. Allen returned in an impressive 86-62 romp over 10-3 Johnson Central, scoring 23 to lead a quartet of Wildcats in double figures. Pendleton sees action this week against Robertson County, Bracken County (should be a great one) and Fairdale.

7. Bourbon County (5-8, 3-2 region). Bourbon dropped their first two contests i the Red River Classic to Henderson County and Walton-Verona before ending the week with a 74-74 nailbiter over Harrison County. The Colonels face Nicholas County and Frankfort this week.

8. Bracken County (6-7, 4-2 region). Coach Hinson's charges had a rough week in the Ashland Invitational, losing 96-57 to Bullitt East, 65-61 to Boyd County and 96-68 to Russell. The defense is concerning, and stud Austin Craeford needs consistent scoring and rebounding from the supporting cast. The Bears did finish with a 74-44 win over Felicity (OH) behind Crawford's 35. Pendleton County is next, followed by a 10th-Region All-A tilt against Robertson County.

9. Nicholas County (6-6, 4-3 region). The Bluejackets remain in the 9 spot for now, having dropped 2 of 3 (the win was their second over district rival Harrison County this season) at the Red River Classic. Spencer Morris, Trent Letcher, Sam Hamilton and Logan Stafford are all capable of hitting double figures nearly every night. Nicholas faces Bourbon County and Bath County before lacing them up in the regional All-A against Augusta.

10. Montgomery County (4-10, 0-3 region). The Indians still continue to struggle without their big man. The week started well with four in double figures in a win over Lewis County at the Gateway Holiday Classic in Mount Sterling, but Coach Daniel's squad struggled to put the ball in the basket against Mason County and Lincoln County. Madison Southern and Bryan Station are up next.

11. Bishop Brossart (3-11, 1-1 region). The Mustangs went 1-2 in the Stultz Holiday Classic, with Silver Grove and Campbell County next up.

12. Harrison County (1-11, 0-6 region). The 'breds have to feel snakebit as they continue to drop close games; the last one being a 74-72 loss to Bourbon County. Beechwood and powerhouse Cooper means things don't get any easier.

13. Augusta (7-6, 3-2 region). The Panthers continue to keep their head above .500 as they went 2-1 across the river last week. Burgin is followed by a pretty good matchup against Nicholas County in the regional All-A.

14. Robertson County (7-3, 1-2 region). The Black Devils were idle last week, and face Pendleton County, St. Patrick and then Bracken County in the All-A.

15. Calvary Christian (4-5, 1-3 region). The Cougars dropped a close one to Bellevue in their only action last week. This week sees St. Patrick, Dayton and Ludlow on the schedule.

16. St. Patrick (4-9, 0-4 region). The Saints have dropped 5 straight and are having major injury woes. Four games are on this week's slate; the final one being an All-A matchup against favorite Paris.

17. Silver Grove (0-8, 0-1 region). Ludlow and Brossart in the All-A loom for the Trains.

Player of the Week:

After much deliberation and several worthy candidates to consider, this week's award goes to senior guard Jake Ohmer of Scott; leading the Eagles to three straight wins at the Traditional Bank Classic. Jake is currently averaging nearly 27 points per game, over 46% from downtown and hits at an 85% clip from the line.

Looks like a good update Papa. As I said in another thread the top 5 seem to be distancing themselves from the field at this point.

Agree with everyone above! As a true Greyhound alum and supporter we are a very inconsistent team. Now a road win at Clark County puts on the heels of the camels.
