There was a time when coaches would throw their hat in the ring immediately for a Mason County job, boys or girls. They still have some of the best facilities in the region and the state. Just hard to put a finger on why positions there are not as desirable as they once were. There has always been a very strong sense of pride associated with the program. For whatever reason maybe it’s just not there anymore. The boys’ job took awhile to fill and now the girls’ job just quietly sits vacant. Tough time for the returning players as we zoom through summer and each day brings us closer to when they really need to have someone in charge to prepare them for the upcoming season. The dead period ends in less than a week and practices and scrimmages will start back up. Maybe a decision will come sooner than later.

It won’t get a lot of love but for those who know, Augusta/Bracken Co has been a fierce rivalry for a long time. No, the record doesn’t scream “rivalry” but it doesn’t matter when you tip off. Generations of fans have been born into it. Through the lean years at Augusta(mid-late 80s) all ppl wanted to know when winter time came was when do you play Bracken County? Been many players switch sides over the years, kids graduate and switch allegiance, then have kids and dread wearing their high school’s rival’s colors. Black roses sent at district tournament time. BC’s school steps were once painted orange and black. There’s so much more I can’t think of. But I’ve got one more. Augusta fans chanting “Augusta County” when a good beat down is taking place.

In today’s world he is going to South Florida “for now.” By the time he’s a senior there’s no telling where all he'll have played if he is still a student-athlete in four years.

Was wanting to bring this game up when I got home to see my cousin get honored between games but it’s not even listed on NFHS. Anyone have any insight here?

I watched some of this game. Woodford just never get anything going on offense. Never looked comfortable. North was the aggressor start to finish on both ends.

There used to be balance in the 10th region. The parity made it one of the stronger regions in the state. Now the rest of us watch the same ones battle it out year after year. Occasionally someone might sneak in there but it’s doubtful. This new era of high school sports has ruined it. And don’t get me started on the shot clock…

Augusta vs. Mason County. The two teams barely have 10 wins between them but both games have been tight this year. Mason County has won by 8 and 2. Fun fact, Augusta has only beaten Mason County four times ever but, three of those have come in the 39th district tournament.

Augusta, down 10 early in the 4th quarter, storms back with strong defense and some timely Griffin Miller 3s to pick up the district win. Will any 39th district team win the region? Not this year!! Will the 39th district tournament be must see basketball? Absolutely!!

First time since 2000 Saints top the Royals. Amari Myrick leads the Saints with 30 points. The 39th district is down and WIDE OPEN!!

Yes. Scrappy bunch that plays well together. Will be undersized just about every night but they’ve got a lot of fight. Just can’t be too aggressive and get into foul trouble.

Augusta opens the season with a decisive win over their longtime rival. Sophomore Maddox Hesler led all scorers with 27 points, hitting 5 of the Panthers’ 16 3s. Fellow sophomore Ross Carl had 14 and freshman Griffin Miller added a career high 10 off the bench. The Panthers are back in action on Friday night at the Fieldhouse in Maysville facing off against Mason County (7:30). That’s followed up by an afternoon home game vs. St. Patrick at 4 on homecoming. Both games are seeding games and are also g/b double headers.

That sure didn’t take long!

Hearing that it was a parent driven decision. Must’ve threatened to take their child elsewhere. Can’t let it come to that. Have faith in the man you hired who has had nothing but success. Might be hard to find a new coach if they don’t think the administration will have their back.

Troy Archibald was pressured to resign after winning three straight 39th district titles and compiling a 61-47 record in four seasons. Certainly not a recipe for removal but, Patrick Kelsch was pushed out after a very successful run there. Hmmm…

Heard there was an injury to Nicholas County’s Preston Blake in last night’s game with Harrison County. Anyone know if this is true?

Aww man, I dunno. I’m kidding!! Of course I’m picking my Panthers!! I told Coach Hinson after our first matchup which Mason County won, 80-52, that’s a team we can beat. He agreed and the second time, we won the game, 74-72. That was the first win for Augusta over Mason County in the regular season, ever! Next hurdle? Beating them twice in one season. We’ll find out tomorrow night!!

Three words that can summarize this time of year that gives underdogs hope at any level. Anything can happen.

Can’t wait to see this! Chris Lofton might be the most powerful athlete I’ve ever watched. He made a lifelong Augusta fan root for a Mason County player and a die hard Kentucky fan root for a Tennessee player. I’ll always wish he would’ve gotten a shot in the NBA. Young kids need to watch and learn from him. Quite possibly the 10th region’s best ever.

Now remember, I didn’t say give him the award but, right now, he deserves some votes. In my eyes we have exceeded expectations. Before the season when asked about this team I said we wouldn’t be as strong as last year but we’d win the games we should and even some we shouldn’t. But I didn’t know it would add up to 17 wins going into the district tournament. Watching these boys develop as the season has progressed has been a lot of fun. There are other candidates, strong ones, young coaches trying to make their mark in this region, but my pick is Jason Hinson.

I’d say Jason Hinson should have some coach of the year votes thrown his way. After losing 10th POY Kylan Hinson, Conner Snapp and Devonte Jefferson from the 10th region All A championship team that won 20 games, they’ve racked up 17 wins and earned the #1 seed in the first year the 39th district seeded.
