NewCath is west (Districts 1-4) and Raceland is east (Districts 5-8) so they can’t play until the state semifinals.

I don’t think there’s been talk of it being weaker, it’s just that CAL has been viewed as head and shoulders above and the perception is everyone is playing for second.

Calpreps/HSRatings is widely considered to be the best rating system there is. Garrard County beat Bardstown two weeks ago but Bardstown is still ranked ahead of the Lions in those ratings. Bottom line, there is a lot of data that goes into power ratings and the deeper you are in the season the more data there is.

I know the margin was wide but I don't hate this game being played by McCreary. They've really taken some positive steps at the middle school level, made the playoffs in high school this year, and Marple has always been a solid coach. The Raiders aren't at Somerset level but there are some long-term benefits for a program to put a game like this on the schedule.

It has been really interesting to watch. I think there's an argument that all five teams were capable of being district champions.

Looks like everything is settled except a 2A district in eastern Kentucky where one team will miss the playoffs and a 5A district in Louisville that is just about seeding. Also, Fort Campbell and Trigg County are making up their game that was canceled a couple weeks ago with the winner making the playoffs and the loser missing out.

I wondered if that might be the case. They played Danville well but then were handled easily by WEB DuBois.

Lexington Catholic's first ever home football game was against Casey County on September 20, 1991. The game had to be played on Catholic's soccer field and it didn't have goal posts! The Knights lost 8-0, on their way to a 1-4 season (the lone win came in the finale against Ironton St. Joseph). Catholic won the 1992 opener at Casey County, 27-0, and finished that year 9-1. They moved into district play in 1993.

I saw them in their opener against DeSales and it was a pretty balanced attack, especially considering what Reed's teams at South Oldham always looked like. Their season stats are almost 50-50: they've passed for 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 1,175 and 12 scores.

They've won the district every season but one since 2007. In 2017, playing in Class 2A, the Breds finished runners-up to Lloyd Memorial.

Per Calpreps, Pikeville has played far and away the toughest schedule in Class 1A. Ratings-wise, among the three teams mentioned, Campbellsville is next hardest, then KCD, then Raceland, although their numbers are almost the same. By the numbers, the best win among the four is Pikeville over Raceland. The best win against an outside opponent is Raceland over Ashland then KCD over Sayre (both on opening night). The three best opponents all played Pikeville: CAL, Johnson Central, and Belfry. Bell County, who beat Campbellsville, is rated slightly lower than Belfry. To summarize, Pikeville has played the hardest schedule but with the worst results. The other three are rated closely. I think most people are giving Pikeville and Raceland a slight edge over KCD and Campbellsville based mostly on past success. Will that be how it turns out? Not sure, but it is exciting when a class has a deeper bench of championship contenders.

Should definitely be a winnable first round game. Holy Cross now has to go to Russellville, which should be a good game, but with the way the Cougars have trended lately, I might pick Russellville to get the win.

Listen, if the Central band doesn’t get to play then I’m not going to watch Central football play. They are one of the best and most unique things about Kentucky high school football.

Correct. It usually works itself out but as a Trinity fan said somewhere else, their challenging schedule of out-of-state teams ends up costing them home games in the playoffs. I'm fine with a computer system but if we're using one, it needs to be the absolute best version.

But at least Owensboro Catholic, LCA, Belfry, Beechwood, and Mayfield are viable contenders for the top spot and debating who is better is in some ways splitting hairs. Having Danville 4th in the RPI - ahead of Belfry and Beechwood - is where there is clearly a problem with the formula.

Those are based on regular season district standings but for right now it would look like this: Boyle County vs. Harlan County or Wayne County Johnson Central/Ashland winner vs. Covington Catholic Johnson Central/Ashland loser at Highlands Franklin County vs. Valley or Western Hills Corbin vs. Lincoln County or Perry County Central
