Kind of funny, I'm not a Pikeville fan, if the RPI is based on tough schedules why then is Pikeville as low as they are. They’ve played a very tough schedule this year!

According to CalPreps, now known as "HSRankings", not only do they have the toughest schedule in Class A by a longshot (10.8 rating and NewCath is a distant 2nd at -.6), but their SOS would be/is:

•  2nd in 2A (behind LCA with a SOS of 22.7)
• 1st in 3A (CAL next in line at 9.1)
• 4th in 4A (Corbin 1st at 16.8, Boyle 2nd at 15.7, CovCath at 13.9, then right in front of Johnson Central at 10.6).

The rpi has never made sense to me! First of all if you play in class A then you either play highly ranked teams in your class or teams in higher classes just to get better field position in the playoffs! You’re always playing up! And it’s difficult to line up a schedule!

The thing with a strong strength of schedule is, you have to win those though games for it to help you.  Anyone can schedule great teams and get beat, but for those tough games to help you, you have to win them.

You need wins in RPI. Any loss hurts regardless of the quality of the opponent because you get a zero on your Winning Percentage (WP) calculation. Look at column 1 for Pikeville. They are 11th in that WP column. Column 2 is Opponents Winning Percentage and Pikeville is #2 in that column. That is where they get boosted from 11th in WP up to #6 in the rankings. If Pikeville had beaten one of those 3 excellent opponents they lost to, they would probably be #1 or #2.

My issue is KCD. They have beat 2 teams with winning records, Sayre being their best win at the first of the year. Outside of that they have beat below average teams with losing records. And the way it looks I’m not sure anyone in 1A can grab the #1 spot from them. They are .10 more than Raceland.

Raceland has one really good win - Ashland in game 1. All their other wins are over teams with losing records. KCD's OWP is better than Raceland's. 

KCD has a challenging district including Campbellsville so this is far from over.

Thanks this rpi is a mess in a way. Because Raceland could schedule Ironton who is an Ohio powerhouse but still doesn’t help with the rpi. And schools have to schedule these out of state schools to have a full season. And since I’m on a roll here the rpi forces class A teams to either play up in the higher classes or play higher ranked teams in class A in order to get better field position in the playoffs, and this makes it tough when schools will not play you anymore because of your success in football!

Raceland is kinda like KCD. They have played two teams with winning records, one of them being Pikeville. I promise you can play teams that are relevant. They did beat hazard Friday night and they are better than a losing record and I look for them to upset someone in the playoffs.

Anyone in the top five in class A has a chance. Raceland Pikeville Cambellsville KCD Hazard are all playing on an equal playing field. All are good teams and loaded with experience.

Agreed. You don’t think there is any one team that stands out more than the other? Or has a quality win that the others don’t have?
