Yes, the baseball team is having great success right now, and for that I am grateful. The group of boys that they have had for the past few years have been awesome. Hopefully they will continue with their winning ways. As for the football and basketball teams, there has been some turmoil recently. I feel that there are many reasons for this, but I will only touch on a couple of them. Greenup County has always been an agricultural area, and since football and basketball are fall sports, a lot of talented boys can't play because of prior responsibilities to their families. I have heard my dad (Wurtland High class of '73) tell stories of how the football team would spend many practices going from farm to farm helping with the harvest, just so the boys who lived on those farms would be able to play. Such community help is no longer heard of, so those boys are no longer able to play. Another thing that I have noticed is the transfer of a lot of talent out of the county system to other area schools. Is it for academic reasons? That I do not know, but I remember at least 3 starter quality basketball players leaving before my senior year. One to Raceland and 2 to Ashland. All three of them started for their new teams. Last, the feeder system for the football and basketball programs are not what they could be. We have 2 Middle schools that feed into the High School, but as far as Junior league programs, not much is out there. There are a lot of boys who come into the high school program that have no clue of basic fundamentals in their respective sports. I know that there are grumblings of politics and parent interference, but I will not get into that. The things that I have mentioned are just my opinions and things that I have noticed from living in the area most of my life. I wish there was some way to "fix" Greenup, but there is no easy answer. All we can do is cheer our boys on and hope that things will get better. Remember, the players are doing all they can, and hearing the boo-birds in the crowd will do nothing to help the situation.

I, too, hate to pick between these two teams. But, with what I have seen this year, I think Raceland will win a pretty close game. Greenup and Raceland both will be riding high from their previous week's wins. The Rams will prove to be too tough for my beloved Muskies.

I think Raceland will win this one. It won't be as easy as some think. Both teams are playing pretty good ball right now, but the Rams are a notch better.

I know I will be eating a plateful of crow, but I will pick my Muskies to somehow pull this one out. GC-20 Burg-14

I believe the Rams will prevail in this one. The seniors on this team will remember their mistakes from the past years and won't want to make them again. Raceland-35 East Carter-14

I will take Raceland by 10. 24-14.

I am used to being in the minority with my opinions, so I will select my beloved Muskies to pull this one out. I may be wrong to do so, but I just can't pick Russell to beat them. I guess the farmer blood is still too strong in me.......

There is no reason that Greenup will not make it back to Applebee's next year.

Congrats to Lawrence Co. on the win. I hope you win it all. Congrats go out to the Muskies on another great season. You boys have nothing to hang your heads about. And although they are losing some great talent this year to graduation, I have a feeling that they will be back in the same position next year. Hopefully both teams will, just not against each other.

I have been ooking forward to this one for awhile! I will go with Greenup 7-4. But, I will say that it will be a real classic.

Looks to me that Pikeville has picked up a good lot from the Eastern Ky. area this year. Congrats to all.:thumb:

I agree. A Greenup/Lawrence re-match would be a beautiful thing. It's not a sure thing to happen, but if it does, the eastern part of the state would be in a frenzy. The two teams split their games in the regular season, so it's a toss up who would win. I just hope they both make it to the park again this year.

I will take Greenup in 3. I hope it's in 2, but..........

I wasn't trying to be immature, just trying to get a smile out of you. I would like to see LCHS do well, and would LOVE to see a LC/GC game at Applebee's. Anytime eastern Ky schools do well, I am happy. Again, sorry for ruffling feathers.
