Zanny
Very interesting. Percentage wise, how many came from private Catholic schools? Eyeballing the list it looks like around 15%. Male is right up there with St X on numbers....and Manual has more than Trinity. The argument about the privates getting an unfair proportion of the talent (at least in football) is bogus and this list proves it.
Pete W
if you want to do that, ok, I am sure that there is not a high school coach out there that would trade, for example, St. X D-line last year (which not one of them received a D-1 ride) for one lets say Earl Heymon and his fellow d-line which did have 1 D-1 player. The point is, year in and year out, eventhough X and T dont send a kid D-1, I am sure across the board they not only have biger and better talent but deeper. Might not be d-1 material but they are sure excellent and way above average high school talent. where the average high school might get lucky to have one every ten years. So the point about "see private schools dont send as many as public schools to D-1, so there is more talent in public schools, so why are the public schools crying.", DOES NOT HOLD WATER

The argument about the privates getting an unfair proportion of the talent (at least in football) is bogus and this list proves it. But if 15% of the kids on the list are from private schools, then to be truly equal, should not the number of schools who play football in the Bluegrass state be 15%? I don't think it is. Don't Male and Manual have open enrollment? So they are not limited by a geographic district. I think that this is probably a better topic for another forum. dr1
WOW, that's quite an advantage them there Catholics from the Big II have!!! Nice work, Tony! :ylsuper: :ylsuper:
Trinity alum
In the football thread there is a list of all Kentucky High School graduates playing Div 1 football. Some of the top numbers are: Male 9 St x 9 Highlands 7 Paducah Tilghman 4 Boyle Co 4 Pulaski SW 4 Manual 4 E-town 4 Paul Dunbar 3 Conner 3 Trinity 3 Lex Cath 3 Sorry if I missed anyone with 3 or more. What does this tell us? The most successful team in 4-A football isn't close to the top of the list. The Lex Cath team that is object of a boycott is no better on the list than Paul Dunbar. Anyone still want to argue that private schools are unfairly grabbing all of the top talent? The top private school has no more than the top public school. The most successful private school is not near the top in Div 1 talent. If we really want to "level the playing field" maybe we should just kick all of the teams with four or more out. It makes as much sense as the other proposals.

Trinity alum
I started a thread on the same topic. Can someone combine them? Another question, since we are accused of raiding the public schools for the top players, How many of these kids are from Catholic grade schools? Oxnard
That an excellent list Tony, but it can also be misleading. Out of the nine (9) players listed for St. X., I believe only two (Dan Bick and Mike Sturgeon) are on scholarship. The rest of these kids are all walk-ons who love football enough to serve as strictly scout team players for practice and are footing their own tuition as normal students. Is there some list also available which counts only those players who were deemed athletic enough by the coaches to merit a football scholarship? I think that you will find the football scholarship list much more scued to the public side.

In most schools there are a lot of kids walking the halls that could be turned into good high school players IF they were on the team. It is those kids that are the real advantage at Trinity or x. TonyDanza
Alot of these kids are walk-on's. How many actually received a full ride? Only Bick & Sturgeon from X are on full ride (per Oxnard)
Pete W
Yes, but those kids dont go to that school to play football, Just like I am sure there are kids at X and T that "walk the halls but dont" AND trust me just because a kid is a good or great athlete does not make him a a great football player. I know you are going to say well it does if he had great coaches like we do, but you be be wrong again. We have had kids come out for spring that are great basketball, or are 6'7 300 and can move, BUT if the kid does not have the internal motovation or does not like contact "which knock... IS the name of the game" then old Vince can come from the grave and coach the kid and he still would not be a football player. And by the way X and T have over 1600 BOYS "walking the Halls" where the biggest public school would have at best 850 Boys. So X and T again have the advantage on the "hall walkers" to motovate to come out. Thanks for bringing it up, I wouldnt have thought of another advantage they have untill you mentioned the "hall - walkers"
