There are apparently some physiological reasons that create better oxygenation of your blood and marginally better circulation when you lay on your stomach.

Texted with a different doctor friend tonight. He's a pediatric ER specialist, so not exactly a cardiologist, but with an ER fellowship under his belt, he's definitely qualified to have a solid take on cardiac emergencies.

His text about this subject: "It's dumb to completely rule out aortic aneurysm as something that could have evolve from that hit and the comm. cordis. Anything can happen. But 9 times out of 10 if it was to become carastrophic it would be from aortic dissection or aortic rupture, not aneurysm. More like 999 times out of 1000."

Then he followed with: "For any of those things to happen, it would more than likely take either an absolute monster of a hit (aortic ruptures are common in head-on car crashes with unrestrained passengers), or else Damar would have had to have really poor/weak vasculature for that hit to have caused it. It seems unlikely to me that someone would make it through a decade or more of playing football and years of college football without that issue arising already."

In my former life I worked at his dad, Charlie Deters' law firm to pay for college, part of the time while Eric was still a partner there. Two of Eric's brothers worked there as well. They were not on speaking terms with Eric, same as most of the rest of his 10 siblings. Apparently most of the remaining family has also cut off all communication since - including Charlie, who finally cut off communication after he told Eric he was no longer going to feed him money, and Eric responded in kind by making bogus child molestation claims about Charlie.

I remember talking to Eric's late-brother Jed once about Eric. After a brief exchange, Jed said, "Eric. An absolute giant in his mind only." Then he ended the conversation by trailing off in a tapestry of profanities.

While extremely rare, imagine something like this happening on a high school practice field and not having the capabilities to deal with it. 

I made it a point last night to ask our high school basketball coach where our AEDs are for the gym....we have two!

Agree with above . another thing to consider with aortic catastrophes is that people arrest from bleeding out.  No AED is going to save that.  The only thing that doesn't fit with cordis in my mind is that when people, especially young people, go into vfib which is the case in cordis and are shocked out of it they tend to wake up quickly.  I am kind of surprised that the  family has not authorized UC to release a medical statement as to what happened to quash all the rumors and speculation.

I am surprised by this too and it makes me think there isn't anything "good" to report.
