It's short sided to schedule based on class. As a fan of a 6A school in NKY (go Pioneers!), we have some pretty good teams up this way that would beat the snot out of most 6A schools. Same would be true for a 1A (Beechwood) or 2A (New Cath) wanting to play up. In most years, those are competitive games because they are among the best teams in the state, regardless of class.

It's worth noting that Belfry's enrollment is actually significantly less than when they were placed as a 3A school.

Just a simple look at last year's State Finals program and you can see Belfry had significantly less enrollment than CAL who was playing in the 2A Title game.

It's also worth noting in the case of Belfry, a simple glance at 4A and it is pretty clear that 3A is actually significantly more difficult competition this year than 4A. Outside of Johnson Central, Class 4A is probably the weakest it has been in quite some time.

Belfry had 8 less boys then CAL enrolled during the 16/17 season. I wouldn't call that "siginifcant".

Since 10/11 CAL has grown from 307 boys to 334 as of 16/17.

Belfry in the same time has gone from 351 in 10/11 , then in 11/12 had a BOOM of 60 boys enroll to make it 411, the next year they had 394 boys enrolled. Compare this to CAL at the time and Belfry had 100+ more boys enrolled. So when they were doing averages for the classifications those two BOOM years for Belfry, really put them over the top.

Currently, Belfry boys wise is about where it was in the early millennium, yet the girls population has dropped drastically. At the same time Belfry had a BOOM of boys the female population dropped. In the early part of the decade there were 366 girls enrolled at Belfry, as of last year there are 286, that's a drop of 80 since 2010, yet the boys have only dropped 25, if you don't consider those BOOM years.

CAL will be CAL. Not much love lost between our programs. We'll get our shot at them in Oct.

The Colts play a very good schedule each year. In no way was this directed at Desales. If you are playing in December and we are not, you have another fan cheering for you as your fans showed support for us last year.

Interesting stats for sure. Thank you for sharing all that.

FYI I never was referring to the male enrollment, only the listed enrollment that was in the program

https://khsaa.org/Publications/Programs/20162017/Football/2016footballprogram.pdf

Here is the document:

It has CAL with an enrollment of 669

Belfry with an enrollment of 634

It's also funny to see Central with an enrollment of 1115 but as we all know that is due to being a magnet school for nursing that causes a drastic increase in female students.

SK should have renewed the contract with CAL, would have gotten more out of it than half the 6A NKY teams.
