I hope so...but Corning has had over 200 government contracts since 2000, so you may be in luck.

It would not be a good thing if government contracts were awarded based on doing favors for the president instead of merit. (This wouldn't be a new problem, but would certainly add to it.)

 

At any rate I'm curious what the deal they made was. I imagine Pence played no small part in it. But I mostly think it's small potatoes at this point.

 

Interesting about Pence because when he was governor he couldn't convince Carrier to stay but now that Pence's team can put the squeeze on Carrier it seems they had a change of heart without getting anymore than what Pence was offering initially.

Only thing that I've read so far talks about some state incentives, I'm sure there will be Federal money involved too...but that's probably less than it would have cost to recruit a new employer with 1400 jobs.

 

As far as threatening to pull Federal Contracts, I'm pretty sure that is illegal.

Corning has more plants than just Harrodsburg and they have their hands in a lot of different products. Our responsibilities at this plant are not government related at all. So again, when Corning threatens to move my plant to Korea, which they did in the 2014 negotiations, is he going to come save our jobs too?

No president has ever done this. Don't just lay blame at Obama's feet. Makes you look close minded on the real issue at hand. This is an unprecedented move done by a savvy businessman who is now a politician. And keep in mind that this move only delays what they still think is going to be a plant that closes in the near future.

 

He basically strong armed a company into doing what he wanted them to do by using the federal government as leverage. I have mixed emotions about it because I am happy for those folks who will hold on to their jobs a little while longer but reading between the lines it is easy to see what is in store for some businesses in the near future. This is like ObamaCare in some ways. Great headline for those who want it. Now time to read the fine print.

 

Oh wait, they aren't showing us the fine print yet. I guess we'll just have to trust the headlines for now.

 

The previous presidents apparently were not smart enough. Thats fact. If they were they would have done this. There are tons of government incentives to thousands of companies as we speak. Ive worked for several. Why was nobody trying to save these jobs? Took two weeks. There is no rebuttal for this.

 

And here is something even better. Trump did it before he was even swore in. Think about that. While everyone else sits quietly. Fact.

Actually, it's an interesting contrast. When Obama intervened to save jobs he was a socialist undermining the free market. When Trump does it he's a patriot trying to help keep these hard-working people employed. A lot has changed in eight years...

 

I never once said anything bad about Obama trying to save jobs. I said where is he now. Is he not still the president? Trump doing his job now. Best I can tell Trump has barely left Trump tower since he won and has been working. Obama has never worked this long for any stretch in 8 years and I would bet on that. Bottom line they were leaving. Now they are staying. Give the guy some credit?

Who saved your job in 2014?

 

Hopefully what will happen is that taxes and regulations that make it cheaper to move of shore will change and companies will start keeping that money at home. With the US having the 3rd highest Corporate Tax rate in the industrialized world there is plenty of room to adjust it.

 

Large Companies like Carrier, Corning, Ford, GE and many many others provide millions of jobs, but all you here some say is "Big Evil Corporations need to pay their share"...with the 3rd highest tax rate in the world they are paying their share. Yeah some companies exploit loopholes (that need to be closed) but 38.9% Tax Rate is the reason some companies just go off shore because it isn't fair in a global economy to compete with another company that has a 20-30% profit margin head start on them.

 

My hope is that as a Businessman, President Trump will be able to work with Business in ways that politicians of the past have never thought to. We've had career politicians (both sides) for years try to tell business what was best for them and how to run their business...that's like going to an auto repairman for a broken arm.
