Trump saves a thousand jobs in Indiana

Recommended Posts

Who saved your job in 2014?

Hopefully what will happen is that taxes and regulations that make it cheaper to move of shore will change and companies will start keeping that money at home. With the US having the 3rd highest Corporate Tax rate in the industrialized world there is plenty of room to adjust it.

Large Companies like Carrier, Corning, Ford, GE and many many others provide millions of jobs, but all you here some say is "Big Evil Corporations need to pay their share"...with the 3rd highest tax rate in the world they are paying their share. Yeah some companies exploit loopholes (that need to be closed) but 38.9% Tax Rate is the reason some companies just go off shore because it isn't fair in a global economy to compete with another company that has a 20-30% profit margin head start on them.

My hope is that as a Businessman, President Trump will be able to work with Business in ways that politicians of the past have never thought to. We've had career politicians (both sides) for years try to tell business what was best for them and how to run their business...that's like going to an auto repairman for a broken arm.

I saved our jobs because I went back to the union and told them we are screwed if we don't ratify this contract they are shipping our jobs to Korea. You see, my union only has about 100K in the bank and Corning has multi million dollar lawyers to protect their multi million dollar company. Probably not wise for us to call their bluff.

So let me get this right...Obama gets healthcare for how many millions of Americans and the main issue is how he did it. Trump "saves" 1,000 jobs and no one cares how he did it?

Really?

No the ACA made my insurance go up, threatened to fine me if I didn't get it and cost the American people over $1.2 Trillion in the first 9 years. That is a political solution to a problem if there ever was one. Could have taken that same money and bought $3000 a year policies for every uninsured person in America (around 40 million) for those 9 years...without impacting everyone else.

As far as the Trump deal, I care how he did it...I just don't know yet. They are supposed to release details in Indiana in a few days. If the deal stinks, I'll say it stinks.

You said "I never said anything bad about Obama trying to save jobs" and in this thread you have also said. "Obama never tried to do this." In this quoted post you said "Obama has never worked this long for any stretch in 8 years and I would bet on that."

:lol2: :lol2:

I guess we have different views on things that are perceived as bad statements. I guess you call those compliments. :D

Here is a question for all to end the negative on Trump on this deal:

Where was Obama? Where was all the other leaders? Why was nobody doing anything to save these jobs? Did anyone besides Trump try to save them? Ill bet you there are alot of new Trump supporters that work in Carrier at that plant. They dont care about anything other than we are keeping our job and he did what he said he would. Care to give him just a little credit?

At least you had an option, people at Carrier and even GE Plant in Somerset were just told we are closing and moving your jobs...they were never offered a new deal or new contract.

CNN did a report on these employees on Monday I believe and they were all depressed and not confident anything could be done. I hope CNN does a follow up with them to see how happy these folks are. I felt so bad for them watching that segment.

Why? How does that help the doomed and depraved?

It's an optical illusion. This company has contracts with the federal government so while Trump did good in saving these jobs the question remains with how did he do it? It appears he made a nice deal with Carrier to make sure they continue to get those federal government contracts that they have. I'm guessing the deal was either keep the jobs in America instead of sending them to Mexico or you won't get anymore government contracts that help keep your company afloat.

Federal access likely biggest factor in Carrier deal

So he played the card be should of , I figured he would threaten federal contracts. He is using every tool at his disposale. The Local Union president actually made the suggestion to Trump over CNN. So its not a surprise. Just seems like someone may of played that card sooner.

Like the GM bailout?

Actually, it's an interesting contrast. When Obama intervened to save jobs he was a socialist undermining the free market. When Trump does it he's a patriot trying to help keep these hard-working people employed. A lot has changed in eight years...

One was a bailout and the other wasn't. Im not seeing a connection ?

You can't see the difference in government controling 1/6th the economy and a lawmaker offering incentives for a company to stay. A practice that takes place in every state in America.

I think we can go back to thread a few months ago where a couple posters questioned how Trump could save jobs or bring jobs back home .

I very specifically said the Federal government needs to be more aggressive with tax incentives and credits to compete against other countries like states do with each other now. Basic common practice that our Federal government has not been aggressive with.

If this is what he did then it seems I may be right. In all honesty instead of having a green jobs czar or any other czar. I would eliminate certain aspects of Federal jobs and create a small team of experts who go out and aggressivly attract companies back to the US.

This was a good defensive move , now its time to be offensive.

Both used the power of the government to meddle in the free market.

A government made the market more attractive to do business in one instance.

In the other the government took control of 1/6th of economy and penalized citizens for not buying a product.

One fits the definition of socialism and one doesn't.

I'm of all for the government lowering taxes and letting businesses do what they do best. I'm not a big fan of the government controling an industry.

Except they didn't make the market more attractive, they promised incentives (that we aren't clear on yet) to one hand-picked business. If Carrier stayed because of Trump's proposed economic I would be inclined to agree with your logic.

At any rate, I'm very happy for these employees and I'm having fun making sense of Republicans' newfound support of government meddling in the economy. :lol2:

Only thing that I've read so far talks about some state incentives, I'm sure there will be Federal money involved too...but that's probably less than it would have cost to recruit a new employer with 1400 jobs.

As far as threatening to pull Federal Contracts, I'm pretty sure that is illegal.

How can that be illegal? He only called out Carrier while he was campaigning and said he was going to put a tariff on them if they continued to outsource jobs. Surely if it was illegal he would have been called out about it during his campaign when he stated what he was going to do publicly.
