August 20, 201313 yr Author I was chatting about this yesterday and someone made a really good point. While logic says PT might want to go somewhere else we cannot discount the fact that he LOVES UK. Very true. I think people such as myself never envisioned a Jarrod Polson type of role for PT while at UK. Polson loves UK also and wouldn't transfer either even though he could go somewhere else and play immediately. I wouldn't blame him at all if he transferred but if he chooses to stay at UK and never gets to play and if he is happy then that is all that matters.
August 20, 201313 yr Good to know, thanks for the insight.Do HHS qbs have the freedom to check or change the play based on what the defense is showing pre snap? That does not happen, but on passing plays the QB will have 3, 4, or 5 receivers in the pattern and may change progression based on the pre snap read.
August 20, 201313 yr Two finalist are Jalen Whitlow and Max Smith Kentucky Sports Radio » Blog Archive » Whitlow and Smith are UK?s QB finalists, Stoops confirms
August 21, 201313 yr I still think PT may see some significant time. Max's shoulder is a huge issue, and I don't know how Whitlow will do. Hopefully he doesn't though. It would be a complete disaster to burn 2 redshirts
August 21, 201313 yr Sounds like Patrick Towles will be redshirting this season. Sounds like he may want to think about transferring.
August 21, 201313 yr I think Whitlow will be the starter, in fact I'll be shocked if he's not. Funny how the premise of this thread was that it was between PT and JW with Max Smith as an after thought. Smith has been doing work in practice and may still end up starting, but I think it will be Whitlow, at least to start the season.
August 21, 201313 yr Have to believe the QB selection is a 2 year project/selection unless someone breaks out. Plus that would give Barker time to step in.
August 21, 201313 yr I've always thought Smith does a creditable job as QB and the only thing holding him back is his bum shoulder. If he is healthy, I think he starts.
August 21, 201313 yr Sounds like he may want to think about transferring. I have a feeling that PT will stay at UK. He loves the school, and besides, it's way too early in his career for that. If he does redshirt this year, he'll be a sophomore next year (eligibility wise). Just because Towles did not get the nod this year does not mean that such will be the case next year. PT has the physical skills needed to successfully run UK's O in the SEC. If you can't throw the ball deep, it allows the secondary to play up, making the chunk and dunk passing game much more difficult to run successfully. I think he just needs time to pick it up. Heck, before the year is out, he may be starting if injuries occur or if Smith and Whitlow struggle. I read the Towles is going to transfer stuff on the UK message boards and it drives me nuts. Some people don't run from adversity or set backs.
August 21, 201313 yr For those in the know. Is Whitlow a true QB or is he a Randle Cobb like play maker? I hear so many negatives about his passing accuracy and so many positives about his play making ability. If he is not a true QB, I personally would never play him there. I would use him pretty much the way Cobb was used. I am not one of those people who believes that your QB should be your best play maker. I think your QB should have the ability to get the ball in the hands of the playmakers at the right time. The people that I know (opinions I respect) tell me that Phillips is the best QB for this system, and that Whitlow could play 3 to 4 different positions in a game, including some at QB, but they don't feel that right now he is an every down QB.
