After winning the All A this year and being named Coach of the Year in D2?

Newport was the champion of region 10 in 1925, 1932, 1935 & 1936. They were champions of region 9 in 1937, 1940, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955 & 1962.

It happened 3 times: 1973 Male vs Shawnee 1974 Male vs Central 1977 Ballard vs Valley Actually I thought it would have happened more than 3 times!

Last 5 years: 35th-3 33rd-2 Last 10 years: 36th-5 35th-3 33rd-2 Last 20 years: 35th-8 36th-6 33rd-4 (Scott & Simon Kenton also) Last 30 years: 35th&36th-11 33rd-5 (Scott & Simon Kenton twice) Last 40 years: 35th-18 36th-14 33rd-5 (Scott & Simon twice) Last 50 years: 35th-19 36th-17 33rd-5 34th-1 (Grant-4, Simon-2, Scott and Campbell Co each 1) It looks like the 35th leads the way in the "modern era", while the 36th leads overall since 1937.

Had plenty of time to look over the State Tournament Program this weekend and I found some interesting facts about current 9th Region teams in the years they played in the 9th (some played in the 10th in the early years and some old 9th teams play in the 8th & 10th now also). 1. 12 of the 17 current 9th region teams have won the region at least once 2. Teams winning the region since 1937: Holmes 11 (if you count the old Covington school, 9 if you don't) Highlands 9 Cov Cath & New Cath 8 Newport 7 (all wins came between 1937 & 1962) Holy Cross & Covington Grant 4 3. Longest winning streak 5 years (CovCath) 4. Holmes & Highlands both won it 4 of 5 years straight 5. Holy Cross is the only 9th region team never to lose in the first round (4-0) 6. Best all time winning percentage- Holy Cross (7-4 for 64%) 7. Holmes & Highlands lost in finals twice, CovCath, Holy Cross & Newport each lost once. 8. With Simon Kenton now in the 8th, once again no current 9th region team has ever won the state crown. 9. The current 36th District teams have 29 titles The current 35th District teams have 22 titles The current 33rd District teams have 6 titles The current 34th District teams have 2 titles

Never! Especially in the 9th Region. Since 1937, when the local schools basically started playing solely in the 9th, All A schools have won 43.5% of the regional titles, proving that they can compete. The smaller schools D ON'T want classes. They have the best of both worlds now with the All A Tourny & The State Tournament.

Absolutely amazing! One senior on the squad and the tourney MVP is a freshman! Nell Fookes continues to weave her magic. If she's not the best girl's coach in the region, I don't know who is! Congratulations to the Rebels and good luck at WKU!

I haven't seen Apollo play this year but I have seen CCH. Over the past three weeks or so CCH & HC were the best teams in the ninth. CCH defeated HC by 7 points at HC's gym which was pretty impressive, then they went out and defeated every team in the regional by double digits after knocking off Holmes in the district finals by double digits. They are on fire right now and I just can't see Apollo beating them. I don't know if I can see anyone beating them right now. I hesitate to pick them to win it all until I see them play at least one game at Rupp. If they defeat Apollo soundly, I'd say they should be one of two or three teams favored to win it all!

Ordered mine in October and just got them Monday after calling last Thursday to check on them.

I agree. The ref was going to let it go but the extra body language AND the ball slamming were just too much not to get a T! Correct call without a doubt!

Pendleton in a thriller! 63-62

Where were the NCC students? I finally saw about 50 of them after the start of the game. I know students don't come out like they used to, but this is the Regional tournament! I was really shocked to see the small student turnout.

I think Dixie beat Lloyd in the 34th. Winners: Dixie, HC, St Henry & Newport Runnerups: ND, Lloyd, Boone Co & Highlands Almost looks backwards!

Holmes

What a comeback! I had predicted ND would win by double digits and was right for 7/8 of the game. They led 40-21 after 3 quarters and were up 45-31 with 4 minutes left. Somehow, the Indians outscored ND 41-16 in the 4th quarter & OT. Congratulations HC & good luck to both teams next week.

I think ND will win tonight by double digits. HC lost Brooke Lantry to injury and the Post said Bibbins was now injured too. They have no point guard to run the show. The region always seems to run through Boone Co. regardless of what happens tonight!

I saw both games this week at HC. I really think CCH will defeat Holmes. They are on fire right now and Holmes is struggling a little bit. However, I also think these two have a great chance of meeting again in the regional finals with only Highlands in the way. The 35th is by far the strongest district in NoKy this year and probably top 5 in the state.

Great game! HC won the first half but CCH dominated the third quarter pretty much & HC just couldn't get back in. CCH big men didn't hurt HC like I thought they would. Tierney & Jacobs killed HC off the dribble although Laible did a good job defensively when he was in. CCH forced Busse & Lantry to take the threes in the 4th quarter and really covered up Steenken, Ryan & Sorrell. The stratagy worked well as those two were struggling from beyond the arc. I thought Sorrell gave the Indians a lift when he came in with HC down 37-30. He took it to the basket two straight times, got fouled & hit all 4 free throws. I was surprised he didn't play more down the stretch. Whenever HC would get up 4 or 6 points, Bovard would come down & hit a big three. I think he did that 3 times. When CCH made their run in the 3rd quarter, Tierney hit two straight unbelievable reverses. Congratulations to both teams! Good luck CCH. HC was definitely worthy of a regional berth, just a shame they had to play the top team first. BTW, Erik Goetz did a great job this year as a rookie coach. He has my vote for coach of the year!

Two more good CCH athletes who never played were Willy Corbett (current head baseball coach at McNick) & Ted Volpenhein (went on to star at Villa/Thomas More). They were caught in the years of the great CCH teams that won 5 straight titles.

Beechwood was only down 1 point with 2plus minutes to go. They had two chances to take the lead but could never quite get over the hump. If Beechwood would've had some student fan support, I think they could've beaten Holmes. When they cut it to one point with 4 minutes to go their section should've gone crazy and fired the Tigers up! Really disappointing that the kids didn't support their basketball team tonight, because their team gave a very gallant effort. Romes missed quite a few free throws tonight which I'm sure he usually makes. If he had hit 80% from the line, they probably would've been up 5 or so at the end with Holmes playing catch-up. He probably was just drained when he got to the line because he constantly had to battle two & three defenders with & without the ball. He had a very good game & is a great player. Beechwood had three players foul out because Holmes' game plan was to take it to the basket and draw the foul. It was effective for the Bulldogs ultimitely but not before Beechwood had them on the ropes at the end. Holmes really misses Rice!
