  1. I agree with Doomer. Phares is at least an inch taller than Pittman and Euton. This explains why RTA RHO was late to post. He was getting his new glasses. Thre are some very knowledgeable fans posting on here. The size question was the only thing I could "pick at". Time will tell, but I do think GeLawn Guyn will be a high major and not a mid major as one poster predicted. What is not to like. He is a great defenser, can penetrate and dish and has a fine mid range and outside shot. I guess he could be taller.
  2. Everyone I talked with had nothing but praise for the rockets fans. In past years I could not always say that about some who visited us. Looking at next year's Beechwood roster, I suggest we all enjoy this season.
  3. NCbird got it right. Collinsworth would not weigh 220 in his full uniform after he had eaten a Jeff Ruby Steak. It will be between Fugate, Simpson and Collinsworth. You can check out Simpson and Collinsworth on the carpet this Friday. Simpson took an otherwise average Simon Kenton team to the finals last night by scoring 3 td's vs Male. Collonsowth had an interception and a kick-off return for a td as well as several catches. I have seen both Collinsworth and Simpson play several times and they are the real deal. Have not seen Fugate, but he puts up some great numbers.
  4. Before the CovCath-Bowling Green game 2 years ago, the Bowling Green posters were going on and on about all of their d-1 prospects. After the game, it was the same tired line...you get your players from Cincinnati etc. etc. etc.. I think the rest of the state thinks we assemble all of the players in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area and Highlands and Beechwood get first choice of the Protestant kids and NewCath and CovCath get the choice of Catholic kids.
  5. DeSales talked revenge and waiting for this re-match. Be careful what you wish for.
  6. Eta....I think you got carried away. There is this team called Louisville St. Xavier that beat Elder who beat Colerain who beat Highlands handily. Last night nthey blasted a very good Dupont Manual Team.
  7. Collinsworth and Simpson stand in the way of Reese.
  8. Where did that great pass rush come from? I saw SK vs Holmes early in the year and they did not have that type of pass rush. When it was come back time in the 4th quarter it was the incredible pass rush that kept Boone from throwing long enough to pick up a first down. The interceptions did nt hurt either. The SK coaching staff deserves a lot of credit. Enjoy the week. you deserve it!
  9. If Johnson Central runs the option the way Colerain does, it will involve a deep pitch back that requires extreme speed and the abilty to quickly pick a hole. Colerain backs can do this. The Williams kid from Colerain often received the pitch 5-8 yards behind the line and he had the speed to turn what looked like a potential loss into a gain. I question whether JC can do that. Someone else mentioned that JC plays smash mouth football and runs primarily off tackle. I think this is the way to go to beat Highlands, which sometimes over pursues. Highlands passing game has reached a point where it can only be described as outstanding. The running game is solid but not as good as some past years. Guidugli will have to run more next week and probably will. He could have run for huge yardage last night, but his receivers were open so he took that option. I think JC will be a far more formidible opponent than anyone other than BS and I expect a close game with the Bluebirds passsing attack providing a favorable end for them.
  10. I thought the long passes were more a trbute to the receivers that to Tony G. AC would get behind the Central db who would run full bore with his head down. Collinsworth would field the ball like a center fielder. At least 3 of those throws were behind and to the right of the receicers. Collinsworth is improving with every game and will be a 2 time ist team All-Stater ,if there is any justice.
  11. THe total organization on both the sidelines and on the field for both teams was beyond impressive. Compare this to UK's weekly Chinese firedrill and you get a part of the reason why, despite great facilities and an incrdible fan base, UK does not join the elite programs. Both teams played extremely hard and our party of three long time watchers were impressed with every phase of the game. Watching freshmen qb's throw long tight spirals surprised all of us as did the speed of the running backs. I plan to start watching frshman football more often next year. Since Jake True is the grandson of former Holmes star Ike Lewis who was a friend and classmate, I must mention that he is going to be a load. Beechwood lost out on a future star. My guess is that he will end up at tight end or playing mostly defense.
  12. The above post are very accurate imho. This is the first time that my "football watching partner" and I have ever seen a team that was so obviously talented get beat so badly and yet give the impression that they will be a force down the road. I do disagree with the statemant about the UK recruit playing both ways. He only played defense on goal line stands and there were few of those. He did not look that tired to me at the end of the game. He tended to get a decent push and Highlands came in behind him and made the stop in the hole. Collinsworth did not make a block on the 99 yard td.....he made 2 separate blocks 5 yards apart. I hope that some of you who did not attend the game get an opportunity to see this play. It happened 50 yards down field. Buten had been caught from behind and reversed field to pick up the block. Collinsworth blocked the first tackler and had the football sense to merely do what was necessary to to impede the tackler's progress and then he switched to the other trailing tackler and bumped him. He played a super game (and I don't toss that phrase around often) on both sides of the ball. His touchdown saving tackles on long runs were key to the shut out. The birds do have some cleaning up to do as they were charged with numerous offensive penalties and their extra point center to holder was off the mark. Our crowd is Beechwood-Highlands fans depending on who has the best match-up.
  13. Crush...Beechwood sometimes passes against teams they are heavily favored against to get ready for the playoffs. Teams like Raceland and LCA are likely to stack the box and a passing attack comes in rather handy. Boone Co. , with Alexander, got beat by a Trinity team that had 11 players within 3 yards of the line and Boone could do little about it. I am sure the staff knows that they can grind the other class ateams under with only the running game. For those who want Beechwood to play up...why not enjoy having 2 potential State Champions (NewCath and Beechwood) rather than one. Beechwood schedules tough none A opponents and next year will start absorbing a yearly beating from Highlands. Dixie and CovCath will probably be more than Beechwood can handle next year due to a small senior class.
  14. Pittman shot the ball very well the last part of the season. If that continues, he will move up in the rankngs. It is very difficult to tell true improvement from a "blip" on the curve. Only time will tell.
  15. I think Castenada is an obvious omission. He is provong that at Dayton. Also, "the tree" is too big and strong for Kramer and if he had played for Highlands even the Blubird fans would agree.
  16. With senior Qb Cody Elliot at the controls vs a first year qb, I will have to go with last year's team. I do think that this year's team is a little better on defense. If I coached vs Beechwood, I would stack the box for 48 minutes.
  17. I thought that CovCath did a decent job stuffing the middle. Highlands made huge yardage going to the outside and the downfield blocking was excellent. CovCath is very slow and the secondary does not cover or tackle well, but the interior linemen gave it all they had and Van Sant played hard from beginning until the end. I thought CovCath would spread it wider when they saw that they could not get to the outside to counter the speed of the Bluebird backs. That did not seem to happen. Highlands has more than half a dozen running backs who could start almost anywhere other than Highlands.
  18. I wish the guy whyo does the Lit ratings would get a job in Las Vegas.
  19. The Humane Society would not allow Ft. Campbell to play Colerain. Those who have actually seen Colerain realize the gap between them and nearly every Kentucky team. I do think that Trintiy and X could hang in there, but Ft. Campbell would be totally embarassed. The 3rd. quarter beating that Colerain put on Highlands was painful to watch. The score was not iddicative of the differential between the two teams. When not attending a Beechwood game I root for Highlands so I am not a member of the "ridicule N. Ky football circle". This group equates every Ohio team with St X., Elder and Colerain and inflates their opinion of the remainder of the Cincinnti teams. I do think that Cinci has other good teams, but many of these guys go too far in naming Cincinnati teams that could beat Highlands.
  20. Robinson is my next door neighbor Mike Grimes grandson (also grandfather of last year's star forward) . If anyone has a picture of him "laying out" for the catch, I would like to surprise him with an enlarged photo. I will do what is necessary to obtain such a photo. Email me at PatByrns@msn.com.
  21. Jake True is the grandson of Charlie True a Dixie Heights legend and "Ike" Lewis a Holmes legend. He is the great grandson of Bud Hodder who was the Summit Hills golf pro for many years. Small wonder that Jake has God given athletic abilit. I like to tease his grandmother about not sending him to Beechwood where her other grandson went to school. Ike Lewis' brother was a stater for Bear Bryants Alabama team. Albert had only one eye, but Coach Ellis recommeded him. Bryant had his doubts. After seeing Albert play, Bryant called Ellis and asked..."Do you have any more one-eyed players up there?
  22. If there were no polls, we would have to pick at each other....more than we do now.
  23. Bella...Vee Sanford will be a d-1 guard next year. I was very impressed as were the guys I attended the game with.
