  1. I thought Wilson, the Dixie quarteback was brilliant. He was under a heavy rush all night and avoided some sacks with some very neat last ditch moves. He used excellent judgment concerning when to pass and when to run and turned chicken poo into chicken salad on a number of plays. He also held onto the ball despite being gang tackled and having numerous hands trying to strip the ball. His throws were mostly on the money and those that were not were made either while on the dead run or with a hand right in his face. His receivers tended to catch the ball and then cough it up as pointed out elsewhere on this thread. Without him there would have been a running clock early in the game. I would also like to say something about the referee who ignored the player who ran to the pile up and kicked a player in the back. It happened straight down the 50 and the referee was standing within 5 yards of the play. If he saw it and chose to ignore it, he needs to find something else to do on Friday night. If he did not see it, I wonder what he was watching if not the play right in front of him. The Highlands crowd certainly saw it and let him know their opinion. By the way, I am a Beechwood fan who was neutral and just enjoying a football game on a perfect Friday night. I hope the Dixie players keep their head up as the mistakes they make are correctable and they do not come from a lack of talent.
  2. Look what Boyle did to a good Lafayette team last night. Holmes would be a big "dog" (pun intended") to Boyle.
  3. There are some great posts on this thread...especially those concerning whether or not this case belonged in the criminal court. I don't think the coach will fare as well in a civil action. When you have a dead plaintiff and a denial of water in the face of probable medical testimony that this was a contributing factor, I think there will be a finding of negligence., I do not anticpate some huge award. Just my opinion on the way things work.
  4. strongop...I think you and I were at the real game and the "speed overrated" opinion poster made a wrong turn HC won the 400 meter relay with those backs. They were not only fast but made very sharp open field cuts. As stated elsewhere they overcame some very sloppy penalties. Their passing game was to throw short and let the receivers manuever, The better team won, but it was a sloppy, but exciting game.
  5. I can explain it. It is a stupid rule that takes away from the game.
  6. The 1994 game ended with Beechwood winning 19-10. CovCath had the ball with about 7-8 minutes to go and proceeded to run on just about every down, finally running out the clock. I ran into an old friend and asked him about the play calling and whether the CCH staff miscalulated the spread and thought they were down by 8 points and needed only one score. He said "no comment". I know CCH has had excellent coaching, but that was one strange series of downs.
  7. Is Buehner the St. X qb who went 1 for 11 vs Cinci. St. X?
  8. Norwell is also the brother of the forward (Adam I think) who attended NKU and was a fine forward for Ken Shields.
  9. I am a Beechwood fan, but I thought HC was the better team last night. Beechwood had to rely on HC stopping themselves. Beechwood is playing a lot of kids who would have seen the field only late in the second half in past years. Vocke needs more playing time and the freshman Erdman would be a big improvement over most of Beechwoods dbs. Anyone else think the player who fumbled and had the ball returned for a td was really down. I don't think Kozerski agreed with that call. I give credit to the ref who went over to talk to him about the play. I would not have gotten close to him at that point.
  10. I have been watching HS football for 60 years and the Williams kid from Colerain is the quickest player I have ever seen. The only player who could get in front of him last year was AC. Bolden gives you a game film and says "this is what we are going to do, all you have yo do is stop it". That is not such a hot plan vs Elder and St. Xavier, but last year with better blockers, they ran the pitch off the option and Williams beat everyone whether he cut it inside or went outside. Calling Colerain slow is a bit preposterous.
  11. Is Hyden related to Rick Hayden who was a very good safety and punt returner for Uk? Is Montano related to Miguel?
  12. VOICE OF REASON.....Rigdon is just an average passer, but yesterday he was far, far below that. He missed people that were wide open and he made extremely poor decisions. He made some very excellent passes vs Dixie last year to receivers who were fairly well covered. He will have to bounce back and next week will not be the time for that to happen. I can't agree with you concerning the Dixie Quarterback. I thought he threaded the needle all day and the same receivers who dropped everything last week, caught everything this week and they knew what to do with it after the catch. Does anyone know how many penalties were called vs Dixie and for what total yardage? Dixie overcame many penalties which would normally become drive stoppers and they stopped Beechwood after the many defensive penalties. This only emphasizes the total domination that Dixie displayed.
  13. West ran better than he threw vs Beechwood also. He may not have put up great rushing numbers but he did some tall escaping.
  14. It truly was a fine summary, however, the portion of the scrimmage devoted to the JV squad needs to be covered. I wondered why so many predicted great things for Beechwood in the future. Now I know. The Beechwood reserves absolutely shined last night. THe wide receivers made brilliant catches on deep balls and Vocke showed why he will be a force before the season is over. Davis, one of the reserve qb's was also brilliant and Colosilimo also played well at qb for the reserves. The Beechwood reserve defense looked almost as good as the varsity. I have heard rumors that the reserve team gives the varsity fits in practice. Now I can see why. Once again, I simply cannot say enough about the reserve wide receivers. Someone has taught them the old adage about becoming a runner after the catch. It is refreshing to see that after watching NFL receivers trying to find a place to dive on the ground after making a catch.
  15. Worst.....Beechwood losing to Cumberland on a kickoff return with almost no time on the clock. The varsity had asked to go in to secure the victory, but were refused and the underclassmen, running with their heads down, did not see that the kick returner had fumbled the ball and had chased it to the opposite side of the field. He merely picked up the ball and ran down the sideline untouched. I sat in the Cumberland section due to a late arrival and the fans around me had called Tim Saylor every name in the book. The statistics were so skewed in Beechwoods favor that it was hard to believe they lost. Best .....Beechwoods first State Championship. Second choice....murdering Paintsville and Walter Brugh who was inho not what HS football is about.

  17. There have been many, many more positive comments about Elliott Co (even among the neutrals) than negative ones. They play very hard and take excellent advantage of their strenghts which imho are quickness and 3 point shooting. On the other hand, their fans are super sensitive and any remark other than abject praise is taken as criticism that must be defended to the hilt. Frankly, in the words of Cawood Ledford (if he were alive) ....they won't be asking for the films of last night's game in Springfield. Shelby Valley fumbled numerous balls out of bounds even when not under pressure and their best player could not finish his drives to save his life. Elliott was not a lot better and by the admission of their fans it was not one of their beter games. Dave Cantrell needs to turn his attention to something that does not require him to do evaluation of basketball teams. Justice has a great crossover dribble and is very, cat quick. He needs some work before he becomes a high major prospects. He is definately one to watch as he has college playmaking skills, but his shots off the dribble were not just off the mark, they were well off the mark.
  18. I have been a Holmes fan for 60 years...right on the nose. However, the time out call produced an eruption of pure laughter from all of the neutrals sitting around us. I noticed that the Boone County fans, and it happened right in front of them, were not amused. The Holmes player was not faslling out of bounds...he was flat out of bounds, not in the air and the time out was an after thought on his part and a darn good one. The time out call on which the Boone County player slid across the floor also produced a lot of questions. If he truly had possession, he should have been called for walking. If not, he could not call TO. When Riley tripped and went to the floor that was called walking. It takes mental gymnastics to separate the 2 call because Riley lay motionless and did not turn over which is, of course, walking. The 2 calls wash each other out. Even giving the defense it's due, you have to sugar coat the performance of these 2 teams to call it much other than a "root canal" performance. Neither team shot the ball well when wide open, there were numerous misses from close in, there were many walking calls and too many missed free throws (not much defense on those). Both teams gave incredible effort, but Holmes will have to play much better down state. Oscar...I also agree with your posts.
  19. Easy there hulk....Indiana has a few players themselves. Johnathon Ferguson and many others will show up with d-1 offers in their pocket.
  20. Basketball 10....Miller is a better rebounder and defender and the rest goes to Pittman. I have seen both at least 10 times and Miller's shot from over 10 feet is not in Pittman's class. Pittman is also far more agressive. He does not coast for most of the game and then make a late surge the way Miller did. I expect Pittman to pass Miller in all phases of the game after a summer of AAU against top level competition. I sincerley hope he hooks up with a top level AAU team rather than a bunch of locals.
  21. The Enquirer's coverage of this tournament has been terrible. They should be ashamed.
  22. NickNack...I thought that Hamblen was the best player to ever wear a Highlands uniform. He caught a pass a short pass vs a good CovCath team and went thru and around the entire CCH team. It was the last play of the half and CCH was in a prevent type defense and it seemed like everyone had at least two shots at different points on the field. Lynn Ray was asked to comment on the play and said he wanted to see the film first to see if it really happened. Against Trinity HHS built up a big lead and Hamblen was rested. Triinity came storming back. Enter Hamblen and he immediately took a medium range pass to the House. Against Holmes, HHS faked their traditional handoff on the kick-off and Hamblen was spilled on the 10. A kid from Holmes who sat behind me shouted "he ain't that Fast". On the vey next play Hamlen caught a pass on the 10 and headed for the end zone. By the time he crossed the goal line, the db was 5 yards to the rear. The same kid jumped up and yelled "he is that fast!".
  23. Blue and Gold...Crigler played for Hebron HS. His senior year the YMCA had a long shot contest (today it would be called a 3 point shooting contest). A bunch of us went and were arguing about who would win. No one mentioned Crigler. After all he was a center and everyone knew big men could not shoot from outside. No one told John and he absolutely smoked the competition. A few years ago I ran into Crigler leaving Freedom Hall on the way to the lot. I asked him about the game when Hebron beat a very good Holmes team. Holmes was freezing the ball a 1 point lead and seconds to go when the scorekeeper added 2 points for Hebron. Holmes took a hurried shot and missed and the police escorted the scorekeeper out of the gym. John remembered it well and added that his team was trying to figure out who to foul when he looked up and saw they were in the lead. The scorekeeper had Newport affiliations and ever after Coach Ellis always referred to him as that *&@XX**_____. It was not a nice term, but he was always consistent. For those who mentioned players like Farmer and others above Unseld....you need a hisory lesson and a look at basketball history. Unseld played on a team that would have smoked any other team in Ky history with the exception of the Great Ashland team of around 1961. He was the NBA MVP when Baltimore won it all. For those who mentioned some of the St. Henry players. I wish you had gotten to see Bucky Steffen. The match-ups between Tieman and Steffen were incredible as were the matches between Thacker and Barton.
  24. Is this a tournament? Information on this event is hard to find. Went to Bryan Station home page and to Henry Clay's and found only a first game set-up.
  25. Next year is not the year for Beechwood to take on Highlands. Beechwood loses nearly every one of their top players and the replacements are veery small and have not earned much playing time yet. The reload thing has to stop some time and next year appears to be that time. I expect Beechwood to return to prominance when the current freshman team players become juniors.
