  1. Safe at home ...You are off base and picked off! The former heads of KHSAA did not have a clue! If you want a glaring example, I will happily email you a case i was tangentially involved in. They have cleaned up their act and have adopted clear and reasonable language. There are always ways to get around the system, but many of the loopholes have been closed. There is little that the KHSA can do if a parent changes jobs and moves his family to a new location, even if the underlying reason is to gain competitive advantage. Neither you or the KHSAA can reach the mind! Consequently motives are not a part of the equation. For example, I understand Euton's father lost his job. Scott Co. may well have arranged a job for Mr Euton at Toyota. Toyota pays well and Scott Co. is a top notch program. What is the KHSAA supposed to do now, deny the young man the right to play? If the Euton's remain in the Ashland area, there will be evidence that this was not a bone fide transfer and he could be ruled ineligible. Allowing players to transfer "at will" would be absolute chaos for the system. A team like St. Henry's team a few years ago comes along infrequently. They played together for many years and were poised to make a run for the state title. Would it have been fair to allow CovCath, NewCath and Holmes to combine their talent that year and deprive them of what they have worked for so long? The system is not perfect because there are always those who work overtime to do violence to it. That does not mean that those in charge are not doing the best they can do with the tools they have. Highlands found that out when they tried playing off the field games.
  2. Elliott Co. certainly got a lot of attention from CCH. More than they could handle in fact. I then saw CCH vs Mason Co. and Mason turned up the pressure with their tall guards and when CCh tried to throw over them the results were disasterous. If Elliott wins, it will rank among the all-tme upsets.
  3. Mustang...you got it right. NKU has a legitimate concern to deal with, and there is no real question about whether McGraw can play there. As for Pistol, have you seen this kid play? I saw him lay about 25 on Arrez Henderson and I saw him when he was the chief reason that they beat CCh on their floor.
  4. The posts on this thread are accurate, objective and well written. It was a pleasure to read them. CoVCath played much harder than HHS, especially on the boards, and deserved the win. The lady ref did not make many calls and she saw the holding violations outside the circle quite well. She ignored quite a few inside fouls and Simpson was buffeted around quite a bit on drives to the basket amd could not get a call the first half. While he did not drive and dish the way he is capable of, I don't think the HHS forwards did much of a job making themselves available for the pass either. I thought the first out of bounds call was strange as CCH knocked it out and 2 officials indicated it was Highlands ball. A CCH player grabbed the ball and started to throw it in and no amount of protest could persuade the officials to give the ball back to HHS. McGraws back makes him a high risk recruit. His skills are certainly not in question. The CCH game plan was designed to stop him after he got by his man (you have to play him close because of his quick three pointer) and they swarmed him when he drove, however, he dished to open team mates who could not finish from point blank. I live next door to the Grimes boy's grandfather. I am glad that the post about Shover's early production was cleared up. I did not want to see my neighbor commit mayhem on a poster (just kidding).
  5. For Henry Steele......It was Les and Larry Redmond. Larry was the star of the Newport team that was defeated by Inez. He went to EKU and made an All-Tournament team as a frshman(EKU not an Ncaa team, thus eligible). He was drafted into the service and when he returned he was not the same player. Les was there prior to 1954. He shot 2 hand set shots and was deadly. I worked the night shift at RL Polk with Les when I was going to college. Also working htere was Dick Vories, Dyke Vest, and Phil Rollins. Tom Marshall, the Royals coach worked there the year before.
  6. Just to let you know how good te Holmes team of 1978 was...Wimzie was their third best player. At Cincinnati's first 3 on 3 (I think it was the first) he was the very best player I saw. In the finals he played against Myron Hughes and other UC players and the only way they could stop him were with hard fouls. He was only awareded the ball out of bounds, but he compensated by getting theball up on the boards some way while being nearly mugged. He was one tough kid and after the game was over everyone congratulated him. The UC players meant no malice, they just could not guard him and a foul was better than an open shot. The rules were changed after that to protect players and penalize excessive fouling.
  7. Going back to 1955......Holmes smoked just about everyone they played and then had to play the regional finals at Newport's gym vs Newport. They lost and were soon forgotten by most. The 1954 Hoolmes team was very good and lost to Hebron in the Newport Gym when the scorer added 2 points to the Hebron score making them up by one rather than down by one. Holmes was freezing the ball and all of the sudden they were down. They shot a hurried shot and lost the game. The score keeper got a pat on the back from the Newport powers and a police escort out of the gym. I talked personally to John Crigler about the game and he referred to it as the strangest thing he was ever involved in during a basketball game. Coach Ellis never referred to that scorekeeper as anything other than "that *X78xxxxx". You can fill in the quotes. Newport probably would have defeated Holmes anyway as they had a great team and were at home. They played for the State Championship and were defeated by an Inez team featuring Ralph Triplett and Billy Ray Cassidy. The next year Triplett appeared at Columbus East and played on one of the greatest HS teams ever assembled. I understand his father got a job offer from Timken, but I don't know that to be true.
  8. Thanks to those who had the courage to post the criticim of Coach L. I have no doubt that he is a greast person. I have been watching basketball for 60 years and I have a lot of doubts about his coaching skills and so do a lot of other highly knowledgeable fans. His treatment of Schrand cost him a lot of credibility.
  9. Holmes is the best team that I have ever seen that can't shoot a lick. Their best play is an offensive stick back after a missed dead on layup. I hope they make the tournament because we have a decent draw for a change.
  10. Ol Coach....Would you feel the same way if your son was a senior star on the squaky clean basketball team and an assistant coach, without knowledge of the head coach, committed a minor violation that got the program in trouble. It might cost your son a chance for a scholarship when his coach was totally innocent. Sometimes you have to think before you type.
  11. Boom goes the cannon. His name is True. He is the grandson of Charlie True on one side and Ike Lewis on the other. How is that for bloodlines? Watch the Spartans senior victory the next time it is on for a preview.
  12. Boy I wish some of you made the Las Vegas line. Giving teams like LexCath 15-16 points, would over time, grind you down.
  13. I and my companions want to thank the poster who contibuted the information about The Brown and Williamson level. It is great for us old guys who can't take multiple games in the cold weather. The food is available just steps away as are "the facilities". You can go inside and watch the game on tv or watch from the stands. Both have their advantages. It is incredible to be able to see the replay seveal times in slow motion. And you cetainly do not need an umbrella!
  14. Has anyone in No. Ky. Coach, booster or otherwise, ever seen UK's Chuck Smith in our area?
  15. In fairness to Podgie only the last call was in question. He and no one who knows anything about football could possibly criticize the LCA staff's overall in-game coaching. The on side kick was a master stroke and set Beechwood back on their heels. The pass plays were brilliantly designed and timely called. However, I must agree with Guru that taking the tie was the better option and I don't see how even the most ardent Beechwood fan could doubt that LCA was playing better at that point in the game. If the coach was inclined to go for the win, a run, had it failed, would have backed Beechwood up near the goal. I have to think Beechwood would have played conservatively and LCA would have stopped the run and gotten another chance. Beechwood is not famous for their punting (or kick-off) game and LCA would have been back in field goal range after the punt. I realize it is easy to second guess, however, the LCA coach second guessed his own play call,so it is fair game. In the NFL I believe anyone can catch a ball tipped by the defense. In this case it was the offense that touched the ball making it akin to 2 forward passes on the same play. Was # 15 Gaffney? IMHO he was the best player on the field. Well, whatever else happens my granddaughter gets a State Championship jacket. I have a feeling the LCA faithful will be getting one next year.
  16. Overall I think they did a good job. Van Sant, however, was overlooked.
  17. I just hope that both teams emerge from the game without injuries. Both are on track to hit the carpet and it would be a shame for either to get de-railed by injuries..
  18. I was very impressed with the fan support for both teams. They cheered long and loud, but the fans were super polite. Both teams played very hard and the sportsmanship was exemplary. The warm exchange at the start of overtime was great to see. Even the referees were great. They were decisive and correct. It was a sharp contrast to some of the crews I have seen this year. Sorry, but I have to agree that the quarterback draw straight up the middle was a poor call. At that point, both interior defensive lines were outplaying the offensive lines. Congratulations to the Ryle interior line in stopping Farris on the quick hitters through the middle. Boone blocks very well, but the yardage that Farris got was on the outside. What a re-match this will be!
  19. I attended a Beechwood away game with the Williams family. Their son tore his ACL during the game and it was one long sad ride home as , at that point, a torn ACL was thought to be career ending. The story has a happy ending as Bobby re-habbed the knee, went to Georgetown where he was a first team little AA and played on a National Championship team. Tell the coach and player to keep their head up and keep persevering.
  20. I am amazed that Ryle and Dixie don't appear often on this list. Highlands has inadequate lighting and Beechwood is nice, but does not compare to Dixie or Ryle.
  21. Grizzly....what if you allow Beechwood to throw out 4 plays that did not go their way? What would the score have been then?
  22. I would like to have a photo of the pass that was thrown at least 5 yards behind the Boone receiver with the referee in the picture signalling incomplete pass.
  23. OldCamel...Thanks very much for the detailed post.
  24. Oldcamel...Can you elaborate on Guy's performance. TeWildcat faithful are hoping he will change his mind and become a Wildcat. Does he play both ways? Do you have any info on the size of the LCH quarterback?
  25. Once again there was a lot of grumbling in the stands about Beechwood's play calling. Someone on the Beechwood staff was influenced by Ron "the Mad Bomber" Jaworski. Nearly every pass travels 50 yards in the air and is a staright fly pattern. How about dragging someone late over the middle? How about throwing in a screen pass or a quick slant to the tight end? I don't see how any of those things could be anything but a huge surprise to the other team..and to a lot of Beechwood fans.
