  1. Went over to Elder and got individual game tickets this morning. There was no crowd. Check the Enquirer as they are going to sell more this evening, if not sold out. I would call their athletic dept. before driving over there.
  2. WlW recently had a guest who has written extensively on the subject of the harm we do young people attemting to coddle them. I can attest personally to the fact that when they enter industry, they are sometimes shocked that they are expected to behave in a certain way and there are are consequences for those who do not. I hires a lot of ex-athletes because they knew what it was like to conform or be punished in some manner. For anyone who thinks that this hurts render psyches, you should read the story of the Ga. Tech-Cumberland(if I remember correctly) football game. It was won by Tech something like 243-0. The longest Cumberland gain was a loss. The Cumberland players joked in the huddle about who had to carry the ball. The story went on to state that the players bonded and had many, many reunions. They also enjoyed unusual success in life as the article states what each of them went on to become. The Connecticut players will go on to become good Democrats.
  3. George Stone of Grant had a fairly long career in ABA. Mike Murphy did not make the Rams. John Turner played for the Chicago Bulls.
  4. I am always a fan of any 9th region team at tourney time. Objectively, the game itself looked like two "have nots" who had been up partying all night. The guy in front of me was from Warren Central. He turned to me and said " the cheering section is a lot more interesting than this game." When you have a dog in the fight, the game is always interesting especially when it is close. On the other hand, it was an artistic disaster which will produce an easy second round win for Mason county.
  5. The Tieman brothers at CCH. Later Roger was a 3 year starter at LVL. and Dan played at Thomas More and later for the Royals. Are their total still posted on the board at CCH?
  6. I saw "the horse" play many times. He was an enforcer with no shot. The years that Feldhaus was at Uk were not their best. I was shocked when I played some pickup games outdoors against some UK players. Some were not very good. I played a lot of playground basketball vs Roger and Dan Tieman and Jack Thobe and Roger Sullivan and all were better than anyone at UK with the exception of Cotton Nash who was lazy. When Dampier and Riley arrived things began to change. Had Joe Hall not become the key recruiter we may have continued to be represented by players like Ned Jennings and Dick Parsons. The SEC was a very bad joke in those days. Some of the teams that came to Memorial were pretty awful.
  7. This amazes me! This kid had size and his career numbers were astounding. Thanks for the info as I asked about him earlier.
  8. Newarkcath......E. Smith was one of the most coveted backs in the history of HS football. I read an article about him when he was in HS and his stats were amazing. Florida does not take too many high risk players.
  9. He will have some very good company at Georgetown too...Menetry and a host of NCH players.
  10. Are we missing a certain Steeler who has about as many as all others combined?
  11. [Henry Clay-Carlisle Co and Ballard vs Clay Co. when Farmer scored 50. Games were totally opposite, but both were very exciting.
  12. If CCh was sloppier than they were in the 5/3rd classis they were indeed sloppy. They did not have Tierney and they appeared to have about as many to's as points.
  13. Z5 I agree with much of your post but strongly disagree with other parts as does the 3 others with whom I attended the game. The part that I most disagreed with was your inference that the Beechwood big men played like guards. Miracle was by far the hardest playing kid on the floor for either team. He does not have the skills of most, but he was all over the boards and got several floor burns going after loose balls. I did not see anything wrong with Edmiston's play either. You are spot on about the lack of wisdom in Beechwood's guards trying to drive thru traffic to get to the basket. There was no comparison between the Holmes guards and Beecwood's guards, even without Jefferson.. Beechwood probably should not have pushed the action, but their half court game was resulting in absolutely glaring turnovers anyway. Beechwood played as well as could be expected and lost to a better team. Beechwood's coach was critical of his team's passing and he understated the situation to protect the guilty. I don't know anything about Beechwood's bench, but it must be very thin for him to continue playing guys who threw the ball to anyone who wore some red.
  14. Strike three don't remember the details but Dwight Anderson did the damage. There may have been some calls ignored in that one.
  15. Does anyone know whether Mike Scerpenberg has committed? He is the QB from Indian Hills who put up the huge numbers. I believe he also put a loss on Bellvue. At 6' 6", he has to be a real prospect.
  16. Jim Cooper of CCH shooting a game winning free throw after the game was officially over while bottles were raining down from the stands was wierd and scary.I think he had 2 shots coming and made the first and took off running for the locker room.
  17. [ JB.....Hebron was down 1 point and the 2 point addition made them a winner. I doubt that few even know who John crigler is. The police had to escort the scorekeeper out of the gym. A friend of mine told me who the scorekeeper was and if he is correct, he is a huge Newport HS fan. The next game Newport beat Hebron and went to state. I do think Newprt had the best team as well as the advantage of playing at home. The Holmes team was very good and they did have a shot though. Are you related to Jack Cousins of McNick?
  18. [Dinn was much better than Feldhaus who played little at UK and fouled much.]
  19. Panny Sarakatsannis played at HHS and played very well for Western Ky.
  20. Malachi...I think the game was at CCH involving Griffith. The other star was Bobby Turner. He used to go up with a basketball in each hand and dunk them both (one after the other naturally). The only person who could beat him in a dunking contest was DG, his teammate.
  21. Long, long ago Holmes had a 1 point lead and was holding the ball. Hebron High was trying to decide whether to foul when suddenly the score keeper, without warning or consulting with anyone, put up 2 more points for Hebron. Holmes took a hurried last shot and missed and Holmes promising season was over. I ran into John Crigler, who benefited from that situation, a couple of years ago and he labelled it "the wierdest thing he had ever seen in basketball".
  22. Didn't CovCath's loss to a very average Owensboro Cath team count?
  23. Big Stud...Stating that teams 1 thru 8 are better today was not your original argument. I believe that teams today are better. On the other hand, for some reason I can't explain the 60's produced unusual talent and the team I chose would absolutely smoke a team made up of current players. Weight lifting is apparently important and that was a very rare thing in the sixties. On the other hand, playing AAU ball involves playing a couple of games a day in which one is on the floor for maybe 25 minutes. I was a terrible player, but a typical day for me was to go to Goebel Park in the morning and shoot until enough players arrived to begin pick up games. We then played the entire day. At night the better players showed up and we played under the lights. Often players from other parks would arrive and challenge us or we would get in the car and seek games at other locations. I thus got the opportunity to play against Jack Thobe and embarass myself trying to guard a 6' 4' guard like Roger Sullivan when we visited Ludlow. I also played against Tom Thacker, Gus Roberts, Jerry McCullough AAron Baallard and a guy named Butler who could jump like few others. My Goebel Park opponents include the Tieman brothers, Red Cowie , Tom Herron and a lot of other fine players. I used to lose nickles playing Roger Tieman around the world and our shooting games were often played after the park closed when we played by street light. We played year round, but the summer was when we played most often. I can recall my mother being upset with me whan I left my home on Covington Avenue carrying a shovel to break the ice off the Goebel Park court. We then played in shirt sleeves no matter what the temperature and we warmed ourselves when necessary by pot bellied stove at Mr. Piepers store. We were as devoted to the game as any generation and we were better shooters than recent players because we shot more. We were not the athletes that the players today are and generally speaking, we did not play defense the way they do today. The Holmes team that I saw yesterday would have smoked any of our teams and I am the first to admit that. In closing, I will say, you may have beaten the "war baby" teams, but you don't want to play the All-Star team I picked. My team had size, strength athletic ability and above all shooting skills from both the foul line and the field. And as individuals, they accomplished much more.
