Congrats to the Birds for their first win of the year.

 

 

Jake True had 2 TD's for Highlands. Carter New threw a TD to one of the Merrills #80. He ran a great fly pattern and New hit him in stride. Not sure who scored the other TD for Highlands.

 

Hitchew had most of the Breds rushing yards and their only TD. 3 players that stood out to me for NCC were Hitchew, Miller QB and #75 Andrew Morris.

A few Birds that stood out to me tonight were the following.

Rouse #36, he played Defensive line for the Birds and made some nice tackles. #75 Michael Iles also made some very nice plays. #17 Josh Quillen ran the ball hard for the Birds, is very athletic and will be a very fine player. Jake True obviously running the football. He hit the corner hard a few times to get first downs late in the game and made a nice cut against the grain to run 78 yrds for the final Bird score. #41 Towles made a nice pick late in the game to pretty much seal NCC's fate and also levled Higthchew at the 2 yard line causing an incompletion that would have resulted in a score if he held on.

This game epitomizes why both Teams programs are so successful. NCC quite honestly was out manned. They had 23-25 kids, and only 13 or 14 played meaningful minutes. But did they play! Hitchew, the QB #75, #11 etc.

played inspired football. The score does not indicate how the game was played at all. NCC had the ball inside the 10 at the end of the 1st half, but could not score. Had they been able to punch it in, I am not sure we would have seen the same outcome. Congrats to the young Breds and the Coaching staff, keep playing like that and more trips to Louisville will be in the schools future.

 

Now the Bluebirds: They must of had 6 different RB's who all look like excellent atheletes. The True kid, is by far the best at this point, but they have a several others #39, #17 etc. all of who have potential to be stars down the road. Even though the game was somewhat sloppy (lot's of pre-snap penalties for both teams) the kids from Ft. Thomas never hit the panic button, never lost composure. They believed they would win, and finally their superior talent finally wore down the Breds.

 

Based on the other Scores posted for the Freshmen teams, this could be a very interesting year for Freshmen Football in NKY!

A lot closer game than final score, 8-8 going into 4th quarter. As expected though, HHS was much bigger up front and wore NCC down. I left with 1:00 to go and the score was 21-8. I guess Highlands must have gone 80 yards in the last minute. Thought they would take a knee. Maybe that's why Mr. Schneider won't play the varsity Birds.

If it truly was 21-8 w/ less then a minute to go, then you do take a knee. Now if they did that and the other team calls a timeout, then by all means. While NKU was being flippant, Highlands does have that reputation, and that has been part of the issue that Schneider has with Mueller.

Highlands put their goal-line offense in with a little over a minute left. I don't think that they had planned on breaking an 80 yarder off! If that bothers Bob then so be it.

As for what Bob would do late in a game that he has under wraps? In 1979 Nc was up 6pts with about a minute to go and he decided that he would try to score one more time. Ran the option and Kenny Pabst caught the pitch and ran it 80 yards for a td. End of game Highlands win!

Actually that is not correct. He tried to hand it off to Mike Kiernan ( playing at FB) up the middle, the handoff was mis-handled and the ball bounced backward 5 yards. The ball bounced directly to Mr. Pabst and he ran it 60 yards for the score.

 

Now if you want to complain about the wisdom of handing off to a FB who had not yet carried the ball in the game or for the year, that's legit. Or if you want to complain about his offensive schemes from the late 70's to the late 90's that's legit as well.

 

However of all the issues people could legitimately have with Mr.Schneider, his lack of sportsmanship isn't one of them. He has always shown great class when it comes to showing up an opponent. Even his days a the Baseball coach, he would not allow a player to steal with a lead greater than 4 runs.

They ran a simple running play and True cut against the grain and the NCC players by that time had given up if you want my honest opinion. What is True supposed to do, take a fall? No , he saw a hole and galloped 78 yrds for a score.

 

I think NCC played valiantly and should be commended considering they were limited from a numbers perspective. With that said though the Birds didnt do much subbing until late in the 4th qtr. However, they did have a few kids that only played one side of the ball and I would have to think the NCC kids mostly went both ways. Two respectable programs who have some quality players with nice futures ahead of them.

In a 6 pt. game and over a minute left, it would have depended on whether Highlands had timeouts to burn, I would imagine.

Yes it did cost them a chance for the playoff's. I think that Bob became more sportsmenlike after that game. You should have seen the look on the NC sideline after that play. At the time we had a losing record.That play was the turning point in our season. I think we ran off 8 or 9 victories in a row until we got beat by Belfry.
