woodsrider
The guy's obviously got pre-existing conditions... good luck.He said he got down in his back from his part time job and the thing sticking out of his chest was after getting that job as well. Which, if shopping for insurance after losing that job, would constitute a pre-existing condition.

UKMustangFan
That doesn't offer insurance. Still applies. It's not a pre-existing condition if he had any intelligence, and had applied for health insurance before he took the job. That's what people that are smart, and aren't in search of a handout would do at least.

swamprat
Wouldn't he still have a deductible under the insurance provisions of the Affordable Care Act? I doubt seriously, if this guy had or has access to the usual $2.5K required to meet it on most plans.

That's what people that are smart, and aren't in search of a handout would do at least. You're assuming that of his back problems, foot problems, arthritis and carpal tunnel weren't pre-existing either. It doesn't take much to make you ineligible, or at least make insurance unaffordable.

So, if he'd lost his job, and his insurance, and had no money coming in, he should have paid for health insurance before trying to pay his bills until he found a part time job that didn't offer health insurance, so that when he got hurt on said part time job, he'd have been covered. Gotcha. Obviously, you've never had to make the choice between providing for your family and having health insurance while unemployed or working in a job that didn't offer benefits. You had better pray that this doesn't happen to you one day . His choice of robbing a bank of course was wrong and he had other choices , but unless you are in his circumstances you cannot know what they were . Voice of Reason
As I read through this thread, I started to think it was an argument in favor of Obamacare. It seems like stories similar to this one are the ones recited as the reason our health care needed reform. Am I missing something?

He had tons of other viable options, and if he had been more intelligent when he was employed he wouldn't be facing this situation. He should have taken personal responsibility, and decided that was too much effort. The fact that people in here are rationalizing what he did is beyond sickening. halfback20
I don't necessarily feel bad for the man either, because what he did was incredibly stupid. The teller was so frightened that she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. Because he only asked for $1, Verone was charged with larceny, not bank robbery. But he said that if his punishment isn't severe enough, he plans to tell the judge that he'll do it again. His $100,000 bond has been reduced to $2,000, but he says he doesn't plan to pay it. In jail, Verone said he skips dinner to avoid too much contact with the other inmates. He's already seen some nurses and is scheduled to see a doctor on Friday. He said he's hoping to receive back and foot surgery, and get the protrusion on his chest treated. Then he plans to spend a few years in jail, before getting out in time to collect Social Security and move to the beach. So instead of being a "burden" on his family/friends, he's going to scare innocent people to death every time he gets released from jail until his medical problems are fixed? What if this doesn't work the next time? What will the next step be? Assault?
