Tall Trees
I think that more schools in Kentucky need to start a wrestling program. I know I wish we had it at my school, sure would help the football program. Would help make my school toughier. Also kids that do not play anything may get invouled. underarmour
I agree with you. Two teams dropped wrestling in region 8 this year, Pike Central and Oneida Baptist. If a school wanted to start a wrestling program, I know that most coaches that currently have a team would be more than happy to help them out. nWo
I've heard that someone at Madison Southern was trying to get a team started. I don't know how far along it is.

I don't know anything about Southern, but I do know the guy trying to start one at Madison Central. I wish him luck...
Coach Hard
Well, I happen to be pretty close to that guy, and I'll let him know that you guys wished him luck. I think he is really pushing for anything to open up in Madison County. It is really ridiculous when you think about it....a county as large as Madison, and no wrestling, when the surrounding area has plenty of wrestling. IMO, there is an odd negative vibe with the higher ups, and he keeps getting "Title 9" shoved into his face, even though they offer EVERY single girls sport they possibly could. 1owlzfan
I agree. I wish our school would start a wrestling program. I know several students that are interested and I don't think the start up costs are huge. Does anyone have any ideas on the cost of starting a team up? Coach Hard
Your biggest start up cost is a mat. If you're lucky you can find a used one for a reasonable price. After that, singlets and headgear are not really that expensive. Honestly, after the initial money for the mat is fronted, it is one of the cheapest sports a kid can compete in. wideopen
I think the new school in Harlan County will have wrestling. My question is who else in the mountain area have wrestling teams?

I am originally from an area in Northern New Jersey where wrestling was the big sport. Districts and Regional Tourny's were standing room only. Just how big has it become in Kentucky. Seems like it is growing. Another question, does anyone know of any Girls wrestling. I have seen some really good girl grapplers in my time. If I ever get a chance I will like to head up to Campbell County and see a match or two. I have not been to a wrestling match since I left Alaska 7 years ago. Bright Horizons
I expect both Madison Central and Scott Co., to have a team in the not too distant future. In addition the best girl I have seen this year has been Quintessa Role a 103 from North Hardin.
Coach Hard
I agree that wrestling is growing. I feel like, that by the time my daughter (who's 2) hits the high school level, girls wrestling may be as popular or acceptable as them playing soccer or basketball. mexitucky
I believe, and this is goofy, that w/ the rise of MMA and wrestling's success in MMA, you will see more interested kids.
