Perhaps the three best running backs ever at Highlands led their team to state championships in the 1960s.

The Burt brothers were legends in the state of Kentucky in the late '50s and early '60, and Jim Burt went on to be drafted in the fifth round by the Los Angeles Rams. Effie Vories was explosive and similar in running style to Justin Frisk.

Somerset has had a few good ones over the years. It would be a toss up for me between a few. All of the Newells over the years have to get some recognition at Somerset and I'm sure there were some before them that I just don't remember or that I am not thinking of.

 

Pete Venable and James Fletcher are the two I remember.

 

 

I would add Scott Stephens and Eric (EJ) Jones to that list as well. I would pick either Fletcher or "Doc" Stephens as the best I ever saw at Somerset.

Thomas "Pete" Venable was the best IMHO. I saw Pete the other night and he still looks like he could run over somebody. He lives in Ft. Lauderdale and was home visiting for about a week.

Can't argue with you, I just didn't get to se him play until he got to UK.

From Boyle County it's definitely Matt Quinn. He was a monster at tailback and he would deliever the hits to the defense. Won a couple of state championships and I think he's the leading rusher at Boyle but I'm not 100% sure. Very good running back!!!

Donnie Redd at Danville left lasting impressions for me when I think back on Ads backs I watched. The final play of his HS career has forever left a bad tast in my mouth.

I was on the field (broadcasting) at that game. It was a great run by Redd and bad break for Mayfield. That game could have gone either way as most of those Mayfield-Danville clashes could have.

I remember Pete breaking an 80 yard run while he was at UK against Bowling Green.

For Ludlow its not even close the best runningback for them ever is definitely Jim Lokesak...

 

Then Im sure there might be some others in front of Vincent as well that I dont know. But I also would put Jeremy Mills in front of Vincent...Vincent was probably one of the most athletic players to ever play at Ludlow, but pretty much wasted his talent...

 

Agreed. I would also put Dave Boles, Mike Eads, Tom Sefakis ahead of Sullivan. I think Mills might be the 2nd all-time leading rusher behind Lokesak.

I'd submit Troy Lay as a candidate from the former Mercer County. He too knew he would be carrying it 20 + times a game and only be 5'6" and about 130 lbs but he was one of the leading scorers in the area his last two years.
