Frankforts state runner-up team of 68 is about as far as I go back with personel knowledge. So I'll start there. Mac Quarles played at Centre. Bo Robinson, Irv Redden, Robert Clay, Fish Eddins, Tommy Russell, Willie Washington, Ricky Yett, Glenn Jones, Steven Brown alot of these guys were first team allstate, and all of 'em were at least as good as Alonzo and Antoine.

Johathan Chapman has to be the best that ever ran the ball for the Breathitt Co. Bobcats('96),he went to UK,and close second was Danny Back,he could be one of the best to ever play for the Bobcats,a talent back in the late '70's(('78) he was not only a good back but was a great linebacker if he would have only played offense it hard telling how good he would have been went to Morehead State and played some.....Go Bobcats......

Penman was the toughest runner and best I saw from Lincoln but I missed out on Jeremy Simpson.

 

Donnell, McGuffy, Alcorn, were all good but where do you put Jeff McGill?

IMO the best running back from Beechwood was Ken (Beaver) Jordan, around 61/62. From the time he first got hit, he'd carry 6 guys another 5 yards. A close 2nd would be Brandon Berger.

Ludlow- Vincent Sullivan

 

For Ludlow its not even close the best runningback for them ever is definitely Jim Lokesak...

 

Then Im sure there might be some others in front of Vincent as well that I dont know. But I also would put Jeremy Mills in front of Vincent...Vincent was probably one of the most athletic players to ever play at Ludlow, but pretty much wasted his talent...

I would certainly agree with that, he basically beat Raceland single handed in a playoff game in 75' (I believe it was) in route to Ludlow winning a state title that year.

On behalf of the "Old Timers", I submit the following: Holmes....Bob White AA at Ohio State and Rose Bowl star. Also Dave Bishop of Eastern Ky where he led the OVC in rushing. Dayton: John "Deep" Wing who I believe went to a service academy. Bellvue: Pat Uebel who scored the winning touchdown in the Army-Navy game when that game was a big deal. Bob Daugherty went on to UK and was a key player for the Oakland Raiders. Highlands: Tom Rohrer who had super speed. Dixie: Larry Screiber who played in the AFL, Dave Browning and Tom Fry who were speedballs. Bardstown: Herbie Phelps who led the state in scoring by a large margin and went on to Alabama to play for "The Bear". More later.......

I agree Montgomery was a great back. So was Delaney. Montgomery finished #4 all-time rusher and scorer in school history. Delaney was #2. These were two fantastic backs who did well for having to share the rock. Also to add to that they had a 2,500 yard passer. Adams, Hissong, and Sutkamps had teams that ran the ball every down. I think Montgomery had 350 and Delaney had 485 attempts in their careers. One of the Sutkamps had a crazy over 500 carries in one season. These are all great backs who played in different times, but all had great teams. All six backs were fun to watch. Montgomery could outrun you or buckle you if you stepped in front of him. Delaney would make you look stupid like Barry Sanders. Adams and Hissong would just run past you. The Sutkamps never seen them play just heard about them they were warriors. I do know if Delaney and Montogmery did not have to share the rock with each other and if they did not have a good qb they would have easily crushed all the rushing records. It would have looked like this Delaney, Montgomery, Sutkamps. That is why they were a good team and went 12-1 and 11-2. Congrats to the Sutkamps though for bringing home the trophy. Hope they are all doing well in their lives.:dancingpa

At Linebacker.........

Yes, he did go to Notre Dame and was very successful. Started on and off for 3 years, as they did not allow freshman to play then. He was drafted by the NY FOOTBALL GIANTS in 1970 and played one year until a career ending knee injury cut his pro career short. He then went to UK law school and became an internationally known Zoning and Planning attorney and teaches classes @ Univ. of Colorado law school. Very successful indeed. A credit to the NCC community in my eyes.

 

That's cool. I thought that he had been injured at ND, but nobody I spoke with knew for sure. Thank you for the clarification. 1963-67 must have been monumental on the hill w/ all the athletes up there. Cowens graduated in '65.

Tough question for all of the great backs that Danville has had. Most people who have been keeping up with the program for years will say Chris Jones. You also have to throw in Jimmy Baughman and Donnie Redd in the conversation. All GREAT running backs.

 

On possibility that escaped me was Sam Burke. I believe he was a RB as well as DB at Danville on their '62 State Title team. He later played at Georgia Tech in the Defensive backfield.

I'm surprised I haven't heard from gchs about Garrard County.

 

I think the best back they produced was Wilbur Dunn. He was an awesome athlete who could break it from anywhere and run it inside or outside from '76 to '78 for the Golden Lions.

Only been around Bullitt East for a couple of years but I'd say Corey Rakes was pretty special.
