The guys on KSR this morning seem to now be pretty sure that Cal will be back.

Jump on board @nikeman49, we are running it back haha!

I'll do my best to not defend him in 2024-2025, but I'm sure we'll still have some disagreements.

I listened to KSR yesterday for the first time in forever.  It was my impression that the assistants did not get the information of that deal to Calipari.  Maybe I understood that wrong.

Listening to Matt Jones this morning.

From an unnamed non power 5 assistant coach.   Kentucky is the easiest team in the country to scout. You can do it in an hour.  They may still beat you because they have so much talent.  But they run the same stuff all the time.

What surprised me from the show was the pretty unanimous agreement that Cal has gotten lazy.  That wasn't just from the KSR guys, but also from Cal's buddy Seth Greenberg.  And how evidently, other people have tried to talk to Cal about that.

They also said, and it was Drew Franklin specifically who said, that two assistants on Cal's staff are "stealing money."  They didn't specify the assistants.  Also criticized the staff for not having any representation whatsoever at the Sweet 16 to watch Travis Perry or Malachi Moreno.

In short, it was a discussion that did not paint Calipari and his staff in the most positive light.

Listened yesterday for the first time in a few years. Listened again today.

You really do hate to see it.

I assume one is Bruiser Flint, who seems to sit sideways on the bench and never say a word. I wonder who the other is? Maybe Chuck Martin, who came from Oregon?

Probably will, unfortunately.  Even if Cal agrees to Mitch’s changes it’s not going to make him prepare better, be a better in game coach or not panic on the sidelines in big games

Ouch!!!  Just saw a comparison of Elzy’s 4 years at UK to Cal during the same time span, Elzy was BETTER!!  Again, OUCH!!

Why college basketball is tough to evaluate is because so much rides on the NCAA tournament. Had UK gone into this tournament as a 10 seed, yet they catch a break or two, a guy on another team gets injured, upsets occur in their region, etc. and they find their way into the Final Four without playing anyone beyond a 5 seed, we would be praising Calipari despite a lackluster regular season. In a vacuum, it's silly.

That is why I generally try and look at where teams are seeded at the end of the year. In the last three years, UK has been a 2, 6, and 3. Not horrific, but not world-beating either. Over time I do believe the results of a single elimination tournament bear out patterns, and they have yet to advance to the second weekend in those same years. Which, by UK standards, is horrific. And not just failing to make the Sweet 16, but losing to a 15 and 14 seed. Double horrific. The loss to Oakland wasn't the end of the world. It was the fact they lost to St. Peter's two years earlier that made last Thursday so bad.

I know I am in the minority on this one, but I do not hold that '20-'21 season against Calipari, Coach K, etc. It was a whacky year with a group of Freshmen never practicing, COVID sitouts, games being canceled, and UK's best pro prospect missing most of the season. On balance, you could say when given lemons Cal can't make lemonade and I would be praising him had he won. Fair points.

Per Matt Jones. Cal will still be the coach next season. I’m sure details will be released in next day or so but yes Cal is still the coach.

That's who I was thinking.

No she wasn’t. In her four years her overall record was 61 and 60. Her last two years she only won 12 games in both seasons. In conference play her record was 23 and 40. Her best regular season finish in conference was 5th, then 7th, 12th and 13th. She had the best player in woman’s basketball her first two years, and yet would have missed the tournament with the number one overall pick in the WNBA draft if it wasn’t for a miracle run in the SEC tournament. Just then to go lose in first round. The only thing better in that 4 year run, was that one lucky 4 day stretch in the SEC tournament with the best player in the country.

Calipari had underachieved big time these last four years for what we expect from the men’s basketball team. However, even though he hasn’t been good. He has not need as bad as she was.
