That is a long drive for a game that would probably hurt Mayfield in RPI. Playing down in class is a negative in RPI. Did something with that change? The value of a game against a 1A team is less than the value against 2A. Same is true for each class as you go up. There is a 15% increase in value for each class as you go up. A 6A game is worth more than twice as much as a 1A game. This is from the KHSAA website on RPI https://khsaa.org/rpi-calculation-steps/ : Kentucky has six football classes, 1A through 6A, which generally reflects the enrollment of the school. The WP calculations are adjusted to give more weight to a game when a school “Plays Up” by playing a higher class and give less weight to games when a school “Plays Down” by playing a lower class. Bac2369
I believe only having 9 games hurts as well. But the question is would it hurt more to schedule the 1A team or to remain with the 9 games. If that team only lost 1-2 games then your RPI should go up or I would think so anyways. But if that team ended up 5-5 it may hurt.

The new rule that allows the down play game value factor to not be included in RPI calculations.

This part: The Board approved the recommendation for football RPI calculations to allow for two “down-play” games. This will permit each team’s first two games played against an opponent from a lower class not to include the class factor, allowing even the perception of RPI impact not to impact scheduling. The RPI factor of out-of-state opponents remains unchanged for the 2023 football season. The Board also elected to adjust football RPI calculations regarding the withdrawal of teams from competition. The RPI class factor will stay the same for any school that withdraws during the season at the level of that team when game contracts were signed (rather than defaulting to a no-class factor if a team withdraws).

It doesn't explain how they will calculate those down play games. Regardless of how they do that, Mayfield would benefit more in RPI from playing a higher class team than playing a lower class team.
gcbleedblue
If not playing a game is better than playing a game for RPI, then that’s something that needs to be addressed immediately. As a coach you are stuck between a rock and hard place. Do I schedule a game that could cost us a home playoff game against the likes of LCA? A coach should never be put in that decision and the kids deserve to play 10 games.
