I hope they don’t put Beechwood in that district with LCA and Danville. That’s a lot of travel.

I would not spend another second even thinking about that. It makes zero sense. Geography is an issue when they set up the districts. Let me try to end this lunacy now. Here are the distances from Beechwood to other 2A schools:

Walton Verona - 22 miles

Gallatin County - 34 miles

Bracken County - 43 miles

Owen County - 48 miles

Carroll County - 52 miles

Lexington Christian - 86 miles

Shawnee - 100 miles

Danville - 116 miles

West Carter - 119 miles

Washington County - 130 miles

So there are 5 schools closer than LCA. Seven schools closer than Danville. Nine schools closer than Washington County.

  • So what are we trying to get at with this that rich kids who can pay for lunch are better at football than poor kids who can’t pay for lunch. I think this has to be the most ridiculous topic I’ve ever

  • Fondly remembering the last realignment when I put a projection up on BGP and the next day Julian Tackett said in the media not to believe something just because it was posted on a message board! ?

I am struggling to think of any reason why I wouldn't want Lloyd and Beechwood to keep playing.

What is your opinion on them continuing to play?

The games between the 2 haven’t been competitive for quite some time. Since 1998 the series is 20-1 for Beechwood with an average score of 39-8. 8 of those games have been shutouts, with both playoff games being shutouts. Take the series back to 1991 and it’s 28-3 in Beechwood’s favor. Factor in the RPI and I’m not sure it makes a ton of sense for the series to continue. If it does it does, no issue if they continue to play, but I don’t think it’s something that is a necessity.

Like TheConch I agree with fc's assessment of NCC and Beechwood but I also think that CovCath/Highlands is a different animal. Beechwood and NewCath have been going in different directions, one program has been getting better and the other isn't what it was in the recent past.  The fire is still burning between Highlands and CovCath so they should keep playing unless something changes with either program and that doesn't appear likely at the present.

I get that, and agree with your assessment. But at the same time, no one has seen Highlands win for so many years straight, and then CovCath win nine straight, and then finally, HHS pull out a victory due to a botched special teams play. So the programs you mentioned never had the runs/streaks and the games ( the mud bowl, 2006 Bovard catch, 2016 CovCath demolition of HHS in first quarter, CCH blocked FG to Win in 2021) that CCH and HHS had.

There will be no love lost between CCH and HHS. Fort Thomas hires their coach based off of “Beat Colonels”, which was displayed in Franklin Co. Coach who took the job for 2 days.

And CCH fired their previous coach because he couldn’t beat the birds.

I don’t care who is the coach, what class they are in, or who they have on the team…. CCH vs. HHS will always be a big game.

One of those big reasons that helped lead to this great rivalry between those two. Is because the majority of the time they always knew usually the other one stood in their way in possibly winning a state title. So was always more high stakes, because usually whoever won in the regular season, would be hosting the rematch that was to come in the playoffs most years. Taking that away and no longer being in the same district will eventually take away from that. Will it still be a great rivalry, yes, and probably will still feel the same these first few years. However, eventually the rivalry just won’t be the same if it ends up longer than just these next four years IMO.

One of the things that makes some of the biggest rivalries great in sports is because of being in the same district (conference). Much like Ohio State/Michigan, Auburn/Bama, Duke/UNC, part of what makes those rivalries so great and even more intense is being in the same conference. If those teams were ever to be split up in different conferences. Yeah it would still be a good rivalry, but wouldn’t be the same. Which is part of the reason why UK/UL is never looked at the same as those other rivalries I mentioned. Yeah it’s a big game, buts it’s not looked at as the same as those other rivalries because it means less in the overall grand scheme of things. If UK/UL were to ever be in the same conference it would make that rivalry ten times more than what it is.

So I’m just saying if this is the start of Highlands/CovCath always being in a difference district. I do think we will see the overall high intensity of the rivalry die down some eventually, since it then just becomes more about bragging rights rather than possibly going through the other to get to state.

Edit. I read it wrong.

I can see a few 5-A schools moving up to 6-A.

Who do you think? I know Christian County is. I suspect Barren County goes. Not sure I see any other obvious teams but you never know.

Marshall County continues to play up? A new 5A District 1 with Graves Co., Madisonville, and Muhlenberg Co. (+~ Owensboro) reset seems like a better fit for them. Marshals haven't won a playoff game since '07.

There is zero chance they will only give far West Ky a 4 team district. I'm not sure what the reason is, but 5A District 1 is a lock for 6 teams. 6 teams that are 2-3 hours away from each other. Most spaced out and most teams has never made sense to me, but it seems it always happens. I'm sure there is a reason, I just haven’t figured it out yet.

I wish KHSAA will put those 4 teams in a district that you mentioned. Madisonville is still an hour and a half away, but that beats the 2 hours and 30 minutes we have driven for district games in Bowling Green before. My poor son wouldn't get home until after 1 am traveling home from some District games.

I'd like to see due to all the travel that districts are done away with and teams just schedule who they want. For playoffs make 4 regions and seed by RPI. 4 region winners and can be reseeded basically how they do now in 4th round.

That method would create a lot of travel in the playoffs.

I think travel is fine for playoffs since playoffs mean more. I would rather have better playoffs as trade off for worse travel.

Allow teams to retain regional rivalries by forming leagues, regardless of school size. Teams that don't want to join a league can go independent. In other words, Ohio's format.

This actually has a lot of potential!

First 3 rounds do districts 1-4 playing based on rpi and 5-8 based on rpi. Fourth round would be like it is now.

Great concept.

I really wish we would go to this format. Being forced to play in districts can do more harm than good to a number of programs. Depending on the size of the district it can force teams into situations where hitting .500 might be the best a team can do. It allows some of the top teams in the state to schedule higher competition.

I can imagine another plus might be higher gates/greater community interest in games too.
