Nothing official here, whatsoever. He takes into account the fact that Christian County has already stated that they will be petitioning to play up in 6A, but no other movement is taken into account - and we know there's going to be more movement.

Shatzer has no KHSAA affiliation as a podcaster/retired football coach. I could see some complaints from a few teams (Highlands and Beechwood, particularly), and I think there could potentially be some other shuffling around of districts in 1A and 2A. Again, though, this is all going to be changed once we get a look at who's petitioning to move up, and which teams will move down once other teams move up.

Another note I'd have is the fact that, per the KHSAA's enrollment release for the 2023-2026 realignment, Jackson County is not competing, but the enrollment release was showing Jackson County in 2A, and Coach Shatzer includes them as one of the four teams in his 2A District C.

Overall I think this is a great first swing at things, even though we know it will be different because of additional teams petitioning to play up.

Somebody from NKY 5a is going to get the short end of the stick and stuck with a lot of travel. It makes sense to keep the Boone County Schools and the Kenton County Schools together. Highlands is the outlier, which I think is the logic used in this mock up. With Highlands being one of the smallest schools in 5a there’s a chance they get to move down to 4a based on whether somebody from 4a decides to play up which solves this issue.

That Shatzer outline of a Beechwood-LCA-Danville district is a big OUCH for the Ads.

If you try to do it geographically then E. should have Lafayette , Tates Creek, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Henry Clay and F. should have Bryan Station, Frederick Douglass, GRC and Madison Cent.

The reason I state this that in his scenario both GRC and Madison Cent. would drive by Douglass to get to PLD. Actually, Douglass is the closest Lexington School to both GRC and Madison Cent.

A couple of questions for the group. Hearing that one of the NKY 5A schools is proposing to not play "District Football". So make their own schedule and not worry about playing district games and thus not qualifying for the playoffs. This would theoretically help the issue above with one NKY team getting placed in a district further away. But.....

1) Is this even allowed or has it ever been done by a KHSAA school?

2) If it is allowed, would it impact RPI in anyway? I assume no but would they be viewed as an out of state school for example?

1) Absolutely is allowed. Four schools (Phelps, Knott County Central, Caverna, and Jackson County) played independent schedules this season. In fact, there is a provision in the KHSAA data from two days ago that talks about teams that choose not to play, along with potential financial punishments for those who leave district play during the realignment cycle.

2) I think those schools are still classified for RPI purposes. It is almost always small schools that play very weak schedules so it doesn't have a major effect on the RPI.

Owen County, Carrol County, and Shawnee those schools all closer to LCA and Danville than Beechwood and Bracken County are.  I would be shocked if that is the district.

Heard the same thing last night. They spent four years in a district with CAL and DeSales, then four more years with Danville/LCA/Somerset. They need a change and being in a local district with teams like Marion, Larue, and even Bardstown is probably better for their program.

That will help sort out 3A some and geographically, they’ll get it.  You’d likely see a Bardstown, Thomas Nelson, LaRue, Marion, Washington district with that.

 For schools that opt out of district play, what happens in the first 2 rounds of the playoffs?

Who would that be? Boone has been struggling lately but I can’t imagine them taking this route. Scott has made it to the third round of the playoffs several times in the last decade although moving up to 5a into a really tough district will be hard on them. I understand why some teams do this, but this would be a disaster for whomever would be considering this path.

Rumor is Boone and possibly others they have been discussing with outside of the immediate NKY area. Again, no proof but heard it is being discussed so grain of salt.

Not much recent success, but with so much history and so many other options in the area to play football (and I know Boone County Schools doesn't have open enrollment), I think pulling out of district play would be a disaster for that program. Not only would optics be a problem, I don't think it would be that easy for them to schedule. Sure they could fill the non district games, but the district portion of the season would be really difficult. I can't imagine other schools who have pulled out of district play would want to play Boone as most of those schools are smaller, and travel would be an issue. I guess they could go across the river to play in Cincinnati. This one's a real head scratcher to me if true.
