Highlands 52 Cooper 42

Featured Replies

Was it depth? Or was it the off season conditioning program? Cooper looked like they have been sitting on their couches for the past 6 months...

Highlands platoons for the most part don't they? So if you take a player who only has to go all out on one side of the ball, against a player who has to go all out on both sides of the ball all game in the heat. I would bet the player who only plays one way looks more in shape than the player going both ways. When in reality the player playing on both sides of the ball may truly be in better shape than the player playing on one side of the ball. So it's kind of off base to say one off season conditioning program may be better. When guys playing both sides of the ball for Cooper went all day with guys only playing one side for Highlands and gave them all they could handle. When a team can platoon it means more depth, not better shape.

The best thing about this game was both teams will be better off from having such a great battle to start the year and will grow from it.

It wasn't conditioning it was platooning that Highlands has been doing for years. You have fresh legs when you only play one way. I was very surprised that a 6A school would have so many playing both ways.

The most accurate post of the night. For those touting how out of shape Cooper is you might want to take a closer look at what players are going both ways. It make a difference vs a team that is platooning vs the one that isn't.

HHS deserves credit where credit is due but those making comments like players are out of shape and looking like they have been sitting on the couch all summer don't have a clue about the game.

Cooper is young and slim on depth and tonite it showed, they will get it worked out. Congrats to HHS and good luck both teams the rest of the way.

Copper being a 6A school, why do they have players going both ways?

If im a parent of 30+ extra players on the sidelines for Cooper, I'm upset with Coach Borchers. How does this coaching staff not have other kids ready to play. Especially on special teams. Inexcusable if you ask me. I know, nobody asked me. But cmon, if Cooper plays more than 16 or so players, they probably win. Conditioning won this game and Highlands was better conditioned. Period!

Highlands had 367 yards rushing.

Highlands wins shootout with Cooper, 52-42

We've all heard about Highlands players not looking like football players at all. You know, tall with skinny legs and arms, well to me it looked like the big boys from Cooper were the ones taking the worst part of the physical abuse. I'm not talking at all about the cramping issues either. Great game to watch, both teams gave it their all.

I hope all the players on BOTH teams heal their injuries quickly.

When was the last time a Highlands QB attempted 10 passes? That seems low for HHS.

Congrats to the birds on the W !

Here we go with the griping that Borchers should play more kids or platoon more. Don't people realize that just because you have a certain amount of kids on your team doesn't equate that little Johnny on the sidelines is ready or should be playing. I'm sure if Borchers and the coaching staff had confidence in the other kids on the sidelines that they would be in the game. Special teams is a huge part in high school football and any let down in them can cost you a game. I would rather have a somewhat tired experienced player on the field than a kid that you don't know what you are going to get when they are out there. Also 6A football in NKY is not like 6A in Louisville and Lexington. Not enough overall talent in NKY to platoon. SK is the only NKY 6a school that can platoon on a year in year out basis. Ryle is getting there, but Conner and Cooper may never get there. Again, Borchers and his staff see every kid in practice every day. I'm sure if they had confidence that they could contribute and get the job done without a significant drop off that they would be out there.

FWIW, I have a pretty decent idea about the game, and the benefits of platooning.

Remember that Cooper is a 5A team playing up and there are plenty at that level not platooning.

It seems that any "out of shape" playes performed well on offense if not defense.

Did Huddleston see any significant playing time?

Don't forget 75, Bluebirds are playing up as well. They really should be 3A or 4A.
