Congrats to Highlands and thanks to Cooper for a good showing. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Now back to the game and what I took away from it.

Cooper was not prepared for the heat and it showed. 3 starters out in the first half due to knee/leg injuries hurt them.

 

Both QB's really impressed me a lot tonight. I almost wonder how HHS would have done last year if they started tonight's QB. He looked very poised out there and made some great throws. Cooper's QB Lonaker also really impressed me tonight. Both had great accuracy and both made big plays on their feet tonight. Neither looked like a 1st time starter.

 

Both RB's looked good tonight also.

 

Now for what wasn't so great. Defense for both teams looked really bad. After the 1st qtr every time Cooper looked like they were going to make a stop against the run the secondary would give up huge chunks through the air. I wouldn't want to be a Cooper defenseman next week because Borchers will run them to death.

 

I dont know know how many starters HHS lost last year but I know Cooper lost something like 7 on both offense and 7 on defense and they have a lot of holes to fill mostly on the line.

 

Both teams can definitely move the ball on offense but the real test will be the next couple weeks to see how much of that was because of good offense or playing against bad defense. Both teams are rebuilding so should be an interesting season the rest of the way.

ONLY one punt in this game, as neither defense could stop the other. Looked like Cooper was was going to put the beatdown on the Birds early on, but credit the Birds for making the "Play of the Game", when they were down 21-6 and force a fumble in the endzone and recover for the score.

 

Can someone tell me why Cooper kept going with the "pooch" kick to the 30 every time????? Birds kept getting great field position, and with that defensive display, this is not a good combination.

 

Cooper QB Jarod Lonaker and RB Dante Hendrix were funny to watch, as were Highlands QB Brady Gosney and RB Jared Pulsfort. However, was a real treat to watch Birds RB Grant Murray....WOW!! young man was tuff as nails tonight. :ylsuper:

Fun game to watch. Both teams went at it, with both offenses playing great. The difference in the game was Coopers 3 fumbles that Highlands recovered and only 1 of them were forced by the defense. Highlands scored 2 tds off those turnovers and the last one ended the game when Cooper was 1 yard away from making it a 3 point game with a minute left.

 

Great game and both teams will be better for it by having such a tough back and forth game so early in the year against very good competition.

How about the Birds offensive line springing Pulsfort, Murray and Gosney for long TD runs.

#41 Dalton Cornett for the Birds played a great 2nd half at linebacker.

Gosney was a great leader tonight and his 3rd down conversion pass to Jr Nick Veneman was a backbreaker. Two big plays from Gosney to Veneman in the game. Hats off to the Birds.
