Why wouldn't Cooper platoon they gave up 52 without it. I would bet Cooper would score almost every drive if they were fresh. That is what Highlands did under Dale. The best play offense and the rest would play D. Highlands would just out score you.

The back judge had the exact same angle as the picture shown.

Partially correct. My recollection was there was a conference among the officials and then the flag was dropped on the ground after the conference. It was a 3rd or 4th down play and the spot was very important which may have gotten more of the side judge's attention. Bottom line, they caucused and came up with the right call.

Cooper has a number issues they need to address.

 

1. Need to be organized enough to sub when going against the quick no-huddle offense. The d-line was gassed at the end of the game partially do to lack of rotation. Coaches would send in players so late that they would almost get caught with extra on field. Happened enough they stopped subbing instead of getting them in and out as the play just finishes.

 

What is the rule in HS Football on substitutions? I know in the NFL if the offense subs the umpire stands over the football and allows the defense time to sub if they want to. Doesn't appear to be the case from the no-huddle / fast paced offense HHS has run for some time. Seems that once the ball has been placed ready for play and the offense is ready to go, they are free to snap the ball. It does make it very difficult on the defense if they want to substitute. It basically requires both players to know the sub is happening and for the new player & current player both to run on when the whistle for the prior play blows so they can be in place / on sidelines when the ball is placed ready for play by the white hat. Defense has to run a fairly plain vanilla scheme because there is little time for multiple changes -- or have to pull a Marv Levy and come up with phantom injuries to stop play and allow the substitution. Wouldn't be surprised if we see that down the road.

 

NOTE: not suggesting any phantom injuries from Cooper last night.

Copper really didn't need much more time than the officials gave or they received because of injuries. That was the longest, fast paced game I have seen in a long time. Looking at the score most would think it was a track meet. There was even a three minute stoppage because of an officials injury.

Wow you are right. I definitely misread what he wrote.

And if it's State Titles is what everyone is worried about, Cooper has zero chance in 6A, and a MUCH better opportunity in 5A. Saying otherwise is simply incorrect.

Does it really matter who called it? It was the right call, so they got it right. He had the 1st down yardage without the penalty anyway.

 

Are you saying the refs can't see a penalty 10 to 15 yards away, especially a viscous hit like that. It's about time we quit beating this dead horse, because 15 less yards for Highlands wouldn't make a difference in the game at all. Remember, penalty's are usually judgement calls, so it's not who calls it, but how the ref sees it. I also believe the refs had a meeting after the play before they threw the flag, to verify that all the officials were in agreement.
