Highlands 52 Cooper 42

Having a lack of confidence in the kids at Cooper has been the main problem with the programs growth. Several kids choose not to play or leave the team because they know if they are not in that 1 slot, the chances of seeing the field on Friday night even as a sub are very limited. Their talent level may be a step down, but the effort is the same. If the coaching staff is as good as everyone says, (and I believe a majority of them are), they should be able to confidentially prepare a back up for most of the kids that are going both ways. The back up can at least spare a breather for a play or two. Confidence is not immediate, it's built. The gripe about Borchers playing more kids has been around since i've known the program, and it's not all from little Johnny's parents. Even parents of starters agree that at times some of the kids on the sideline need to be in to help build depth. But what do I know???

There is no reason a school like Cooper shouldn't go 2-deep at every position. They have the #'s, the facilities. You will always see a couple of exceptional players go both ways but - especially on the lines and perimeter players - you should see players specializing on defense/offense.

This is so important early in the year when the heat/humidity grinds kids down. I can't imagine why a coach wouldn't start accounting for and start building a 2-deep immediately after the season ends.

Did anyone see any bright spots on the O/D line? Any other Jag players stand out besides skilled players?

Sander Roksvag is an absolute beast. Several pancakes all nite as an OL and had to be double teamed most of nite as a DL.

I totally agree 100%. This was just what I took away from the game and after hearing several people state how dominating they think HHS offense was. What I took away from the game was HHS offense didnt get going until after Coopers fatigue set in.

You are correct. Cooper is the one who is at fault for getting gassed. No one else. HHS no huddle offense was the deciding factor of the game

and a brilliant move if you ask me.

If Cooper can not go more than a quarter before getting gassed, they are in for a long season. If you know you are going to have to play both ways the whole game, they needed to prepare better. Bent over at the waist sucking air at the end of the first quarter is not going to cut it.

Very true. I also don't think every game will have the 100% humidity and the heat etc. It was also the first game of the year.

You are right though, if they can't get acclimated then they will have a long season. I don't believe that will be the case though. Borchers is too good of a coach to let that be the headline for their season.

One of the easier problems to correct. Cooper will be fine.

I agree and I think Borchers is an excellent coach.

What is your take on the platoon system at Cooper this year to give some of the guys a breather. I haven't heard too much about it on here the last several years since the program has started to flourish. Now that everyone thinks the dam is breaking loose after one loss because some players were gassed the rumblings of platooning have started. In my opinion Cooper and Conner just do not have the overall talent to develop depth year in and year out right now to have adequate back ups at each position. What do you think?

If they want to change their game plan because of one loss then they better start with the freshman and jv squads this year and work it in over the next few. It takes time to develop and for everyone to learn their place and position. start it early on and let the kids develop into position players instead of just football players.

I said last night that if kept his head up it would have been a great hit. He lowered his head, you could hear a good pop and see a bluebird helmet fly back. That will get called every time.

I disagree. I honestly think if he kept his head up he would have gotten ejected from the game for helmet to helmet contact! The WR was at least 4 inches smaller and he lowered his head and led with his shoulder so it wasn't helmet to helmet. Not to mention that picture is a tad misleading with the WR helmet because it was a hit he wasn't expecting so even if there was no contact to his helmet his head would still whip lash like it is in the picture!

Anyone that knows Dante knows it wasn't him trying to make a excessive play.

Like someone mentioned, everyone on here that is complaining about how many kids Cooper is playing both ways should really think before they post. In the past 5 years Cooper has had as much success as most schools in this area, and Borchers is easily one of the best coaches in the area. No one see's what he and his coaches see at practice. None of them know anything about the effort, attitude, talent, that every player on the team has. Same story every year and Borchers and staff always seem to figure it out!

And I would say that quite a few players played in this game. Cooper had 3 players go out that didn't return who were starters and at least 4 or 5 more that missed a few plays where younger kids had to come in. With all of that Cooper still had an opportunity to win the game! Parents will always find something to gripe about no matter what is happening with a program. But then again, none of those parents are willing to get out there and put the time in to coach.

Whenever you lose a class the year before of about 22 kids and most of them played, then obviously you are counting on quite a few players with little varsity experience. Cooper has sophomores playing this year as well. So I would say they are doing just fine developing kids. It was humid Friday and Highlands was smart to go no huddle, especially after Cooper's little bit of depth started to get injured. Smart game plan on their part. We need to remember that turnovers were what won/lost this game. Cooper face Highlands a TD while up 15 in the 2nd. If they take care of the ball it could have been a Cooper W. We will never know. At the end of the day it is one game and I am sure both teams have moved on already! Congrats to Highlands on the win, and good luck the rest of the way! For Cooper, get back to work and get ready for Friday night!

Since HHS has been platooning, there have always been some teams that can hang with or even be leading in a half of football (even in some of the dominate years) Then the second half comes around and they get blown out.

Here's why. If you don't choose to platoon, that means your best players are basically on the field the entire time and the risk you take is running out of gas. But when a team platoons, they assume the risk of not playing their best kids the entire game and stretching the game out. Therefore, because the platooning team is playing their 2nds and 3rds in the first half against the others teams best players for the entire half, it appears HHS was beaten or dominated in a half. But what people forget is HHS didn't play their best the entire time. The other teams 1's were going agaisnt HHS 2s half the time. If the other teams 1's aren't dominating or winning at half and you don't platoon, then you are in real trouble because you've already played your cards and HHS has played half! HHS saved some energy for their starters and now you have HHS best players in the second half playing against the others teams exhausted best players.

Now with all that said, you still have to develop the kids you have to created that trusted depth. Just reading the comments here, it sounds like the staff has problems trusting enough kids to fill the gaps that it takes to platoon.

Copper needs to put this game behind them and think about beating a very high powered NCC offense this week.

I thought the QB played a great game for them and Schlarman is very affective. You have Hendrix as well out there, they will be fine. Just have to get those lineman conditioned and it will happen the further along they go. Best of luck Jaguars.

This. And, your 2's get to practice 1 position all week and get better faster.

Highlands D is frequently mushy during the first few weeks. A lot of guys rotating through the D backfield. That will get better.

Maybe so maybe not. My issue is it was called by the back judge who was 10-15 yards away and not the side judge who was less than 5 yards away and a far better angle.

I'll respect the call as it was bang bang but glad no one was hurt.

No maybe about it.The crown of his helmet is clearly down.
