Republican Platform

Recommended Posts

As a counterpart to the other thread, here's one about the GOP's platform meetings.

It's an amazing time in politics, as the Republicans have opted to remove all language about ratifying the Trans Pacific Partnership from the platform. This party has been massive advocates for free trade since WWII and are now backing off.

Trump's ascendancy has made salient a tension surrounding laissez-faire capitalist logic on the right. Whether the tension comes from rising nationalism, anti-expert/elite backlash, or class divisions I don't know, but it is interesting.

As has been mentioned countless times, these ain't your great-great grandparents' parties.

Deep, deep footnote at the bottom of the GOP platform: "Let's continue to act as though the 1948 Dixiecrat movement and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as well as Nixon's 'Southern Strategy' never happened."
