Fire Inside
Been thinking of making my own bourbon for a long time now. Has anybody tried it? Any tips or good recipes to try? The net has plenty on it about how to do it but not much in the recipe department.
Hearsay
Brother, you can make 200 gallons of your own wine or beer for personal consumption, but if you distill bourbon (or any other spirit for that matter) without a permit or license, or even own a still for making it, it is a fairly hefty criminal offense. ThrillVille Cardinal51
Well the first thing I wouldn't do would be to post on here that I was making bourbon. I'd totally buy a bottle from you, though.

Did not know that. I assumed if you consumed it yourself, you were fine. Is this a state or federal crime? Or both? To get a permit or a license do you go to the KY Dept of Alcoholic Beverage Control or to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms? Or both? I guess I better let a friend of mine know who actually distilled some bourbon. Granted, the taste of it alone would probably be considered enough punishment, not sure what he did to that batch to make it taste so bad.
theguru
Sounds like Hearsay gave FI a pretty good tip to avoid the FBI.

All Tell
If I'm not mistaken (and I may well be) the micro distilleries that are springing up have to sell their product to a licensed distributor and then buy it back from the distributor before they can sell it in their own establishment. That ensures all the taxes are paid on it.
Getslow
^ All commercial brewers in Kentucky do that as well.

LIPTON BASH
The three tier system our alcohol consumption is governed by is so outdated. That is a business model I would like to see changed.

Yeah but in the video all they do is pour in white liquor and it comes out bourbon. Shouldn't they be some type of flavoring?

ThrillVille Cardinal51
Yeah but in the video all they do is pour in white liquor and it comes out bourbon. Shouldn't they be some type of flavoring? The flavor of bourbon comes from the original mash, then the charred oak barrels.
