Why are NCC basketball players not playing football?

Featured Replies

I find this whole thread very interesting. Kind of reminds me how things were back in the day at Highlands. Will be interesting to see how this pans out for kids on the frosh team that played both basketball and football pretty well this past fall like Erik Anderson, Jacob Smith, Josh Schneider and Griffin McHugh just to name 4 of the 5 frosh starters. If Brannen and Co. are indeed putting on the heat for these kids to not play football then they would be left with Ben Weyer as the only impact player in that class. Be interesting to hear more thoughts on this from those involved up on the hill.

Back in the day? You mean when Highlands was good in BOTH football and basketball? I guess that would fit where NCC is now. Kudos to them!

You also overlook the fact that the highlands coaches are "advising" their football players not to play other sports.

I'm curious so what player are you referring to that didn't play football that Newcath basketball coaches told them not to play Football.

Didn't the Hightchew kid play varsity football and basketball and baseball for like all 4 years and that was just a year ago wasn't it? Seems like there had to be a lot of cooperation by the coaches thru all that for 4 years. I'm sure each coach would be convinced that he could have been a mega-star concentrating on just their sport year round.

Not that it has anything to do with the NCC situation, but the above quote is simply not true.

Next years quarterback, tight end, and the top 5 returning wide receivers all play basketball.

The current group of starting basketball players at NCC have not played football in years, aside from Pangallo. As Grant stated, i have have my basketball players back in November in the paper, and eluded to he is not waiting on the football player or does not need them to win games. It will be interesting to see how this all goes down on the hill with football / basketball...the football players took offense to his comment, as JOAT said, it will be interesting to see how it all works out with the current freshman class. The players do have open gym / summer camp hanging over their heads by the coaches...pressure to participate even if they are playing for the high school team baseball team in state tourney, playing on summer baseball team, and / or preparing for football. Word is many kids are not playing summer baseball due to the fact that they feel the pressure to focus on basketball. Hightchew did play all three, was / still is a very special athlete...Grant knew he had to have him on the floor at all times...Brady was not the type of kid that you could pressure to do anything, he was going to do what was best for him....Tourney time now, if Grant makes it to the region and loses again will he step down? IMO...Coach Dawn would good the most out of the football/basketball players!

Regarding Highlands players feeling the pressure from coaches, I have no doubts there is pressure there...I believe this is pressure the kids put on themselves more so than the coaches. The tradition of HHS Football and the fact that the kids know there is someone looking over their shoulder to take a snap or two away from that starter and / or step into that starting position. They are determined to play and continue the State Championship Tradition.

This is the first all basketball starting lineup in YEARS, since Ronny Dawn's group. This whole thread blows upbsomething that wasn't there. If you want to play basketball then you have to put in as much time as the kids who play, unless you can practice less and still be a better player. Same with all other sports. Open gym was around when I was in school, we would go to baseball and then there, and I didn't even want to play bball on the Hill. Called time management. It is only two days a week.

As for Grant stepping down, are you serious? He is the premier young coach in the region. He understands that the game is played inside out.

The point of my post is, yes NCC Kids feel the pressure to give something up if you want to be any type of player on the NCC Team...open gyms have been around for years, Mexi if you did not attend due to participating in another sport, was that held over your head regarding playing time, making the team, etc back in the day? This leads to players such as Zach Pangallo not playing football. Would also be nice to have McDonald, Schulte, & Josh V. playing on the gridiron as well. Not sure if the later 3 have the physical toughness to get it done, but sure would be nice to see them give it a shot. Playing football would also improve their physical play in basketball.

It does not take a "premier coach" to figure out the inside outside game. Anyone with limited basketball knowledge could figure that out with the size of this lineup!

Several issues, playing football is tough work. Some kids are not enamored with the physical toll it takes on you. Most of the kids would get put on the line, not glamour positions. Basketball is much more fun than football in those circumstances to kids. That said, it couldn't hurt for some parents to recognize and advise their kid that there is not a big call for 6'5 centers who can't jump at the DI hoops level. Think of Giesler or Thelen, they had football bodies. Wasted playing hoops, no, but could have taken their game to a higher level in football.

Some kids don't like to hit. Plane and simple. The skill set it takes to play both sports is rare. Not many kids play both sports well. Body types for both games is so different. How many kids start on there high school football and basketball team? Not many.

Really!!!!:laugh::laugh:

I guess the 4-5 Varsity Baseball players that started on Highlands Defense in 2012 missed Dale's memo about other sports. You clearly have no clue what you are talking about! Throw some stones elsewhere "Big Cat" ?

Let me answer this loud and clear..........HELL NO!!

Grant is premiere bc of the sets that he runs to put his bigs in position to make plays passing or scoring. This is after years of guard oriented play at NewCath. Additionally, you guys bettervh

Why would you think they wouldn't be physically tough enough to play?

Pangallo, McDonald, and Verkamp/Sunshine have all played football, they can get it done...would be nice to see them all on the football field for NewCath. Schulte would be a huge target to throw to along with Franzen and Tommy D. McDonald has one heck of a golf game and I do not foresee him giving that up!

As LB13 stated, Coach Brannen is going nowhere!

Someone told me at the end of the freshman season Anderson was invited to continue practicing and working out with the varsity but he decided to begin basketball. Not sure that this necessarily means anything other than where his interest may be.

How has this thread not been closed yet? What a joke.
