Why are NCC basketball players not playing football?

Featured Replies

Curious to know if this is allowed or is this considered a form of recruiting? Maybe I am just asking a dumb question as I do not know the answer.

None of them are coaches on the NewCath staff. They are just volunteering their time to make these kids better, been going on for years. There is never a shortage of former Breds players willing to "give back". It's all a part of being in the NewCath "family".

Kids may play a sport as a freshman and choose not to continue past that year for a variety of reasons. They may be looking to see where they fit in talent-wise and what type of playing time they could expect moving forward as an upper-classman. They may be looking to see what HS football is all about. I would venture to say that HS football at NCC, or any high school, can be siginificantly different than what freshman had experienced up to that point with FTJFL, middle school or Red Devil football. Playing a fall sport like football also allows kids to meet classmates before school starts and can make the transition to HS a little less intimidating. Students may find that they would rather be involved in other school activities such as drama, art, etc. that wasn't available in grade school and decide not to continue playing a sport in order to explore different things.

With that being said, there could be a number of reasons any of these freshman choose not to play football as sophomores. it doesn't need to mean that there is an anti-football tilt in the basketball program.

Again my question, can a kid from say Newport Middle School or Highlands High School attend these sessions or are they strictly reserved for those that have been invited to participate?

All the kids that they work with are from the NewCath feeder schools. However, I will ask for you.

Maybe one of them can PM you, I know they are watchin' :D

Did you understand him when he said that some were their own children ?

The Pangallo family will be more than willing to help any young man to become a better basketball player no matter if they are going to attend NewCath or not. We all know the family bleeds blue but if you know the family you know that they all are more than willing to help those in need

Yes I understood that he did not answer my question. Can public school kids attend these? SOME were their kids and others were not. Oh how you NCC faithful have gotten all stirred up by one of your very own.

I know about the Pangallo's and they are all good people, never did I say or imply otherwise.

Maybe some of those attending were non-feeder school kids who become eligible by joining St Therese on paper only? I hear that happens.

My son was coach by Mr. Pangallo in Aau not once did he persuade my son or me to that he wanted us to go to Newcath. His goal was for the kids to all play High School Basketball. My Son choice was Highlands and Mr Pangallo was very happy for him. Great Person and Great Family. They would help any kid out in basketball no matter what high school they attend. I know for a fact during the summer they welcome any kids to come up in their open gyms even if they don't go to Newcath.

Demands and expectations of AAU programs? Varsity coaches expecting commitment to one sport? 12 month a year conditioning and participation expectations? Parents who have unrealistic assessment of their child's skill level?

Disclaimer: I have no connection to NCC and am just throwing these out.

Sounds like a football program I know of close by.

Many of the NCC basketball players also play a fall sport, just not all of them play football. McDonald, Seibert, Dupont, Bueter and Devoto all played golf. Haas, Franzen and Gray played football and Freppon played soccer. With Pangallo playing baseball, doesn't that leave only Schulte, Rawe, Verkamp and Dawson as "Basketball Only" athletes? Does Weyer play baseball also?

Not the same argument here. Basketball is being played 12 months a year at NCC and its evident. I liken their hoops program to Highlands football program.

You actually raise an interesting question. When a school has an open gym, can anyone from any school attend that open gym?

Sorry if this is off the topic or should be in another thread.

I think so, I know my son was invited to go play up there in the offseason and I thought it was a gracious offer considering 90% of his teammates were playing football at the time.

I know their is a 7th grade Pangallo that is very good and im sure the kids being instructed were likely Catholic school teammates WHO likely are planning to attend NCC anyway. I doubt they hold open gym sessions trying to get public school kids to come there.

That's either a stretch or a major insult to Highlands football program. Highlands football program has 22 state championships. NCC has had a few decent teams on the basketball court the last few years. They've had some good players and some exciting games. They are one of the best teams in the 9th region several years running. But, what have they won? The only have 1 regional title in the last 25+ years. That was over a decade ago. That's a ton of good players over the years that left without a title. Hardly on the level of Highlands football where every kid is leaving with a fist full of rings. I "liken" NCC basketball to Boone county's football ball program. A few good runs here and there, but never reached the pinnalce.

Keep trying. The shoe is now firmly on the other foot and you want to keep trying to deflect it in another direction. I am sure that is why those two Red Devils chose HHS over NCC, because they toured that nasty locker room. I am sure they do not pay any tuition either right? I am just curious to see what happens with the current frosh class at NCC and we will get a pretty good gauge on if what is being claimed in this thread actually has some teeth or not. Only time will tell I guess.

You made me laugh out loud when I read this and those sitting around me looking at me like I am nuts...................
