Curious to know if this is allowed or is this considered a form of recruiting? Maybe I am just asking a dumb question as I do not know the answer.

I have no dog in the fight here, but I find it quite interesting that a Highlands fan is asking this question. Just sayin.

I saw a post in another thread about high school athletes that don't have a real chance to play college basketball, should play other sports. I thought it was an excellent comment. It seems NCC has this problem and has been a problem over the last few years. I've watched the NCC varsity basketball team play a few times. They have some kids that could be serious studs in football and possibly play on the next level, but really have no chance at playing college basketball. IMO, their is only one basketball prospect on that team, jake Shultz or something like that, not sure on the last name. They had a kid a few years ago, jake geisler, he could have played on Sundays......now I hear he is trying to walk on at NKU.

Where are these kids getting their advice from, guess that's my question. They need to realize, NKU isn't taking 5'9" players anymore. You better be better or as good as the sophomore from Holmes.

I'm sure they're playing the sport they prefer. I wouldnt trade a professional bad mitten career for my high school playing days. FWIW, I owned the PE class in bad mitten.

I dont doubt that coaches put a little pressure on kids to only focus on basketball. I think a big part of it it basketball strength and football strenght is WAY different. Mcdonals for example is a fine golfer and basketball player, he has a shot to play at the next level. If you put him on the football field IMO he would be soft. Its a whole different mental state on the field than the hardwood. In the late 90's during some down years of NewCath football there were several yound men who played basketball and not football that could have helped make a difference on the football field but didnt have the football "knock someones head off" mentality. Coaches do get in kids heads about working all year on one sport and all it takes is one kid to go for it it then he gets a few of his buddies to join in. It is what it is.

McDonald played with my son one year in the FTJFL. He doesn't have the agressive mentality to do well in football. I could tell it wasn't for him just from watching him play that one year. Nice big athlete just not a football player imo...

Highlands does not do this type of thing for any sport that I am aware of. Heck incoming frosh from other schools are not allowed to start football until their school has completed their academic year even if they have expressed their desire to come there. So how does NCC get around that? Could a public school kid go to these "open gyms" if that is what you would like to call them or is that what has been done to lure kids there already? Just sayin

:idunno: Who knows. Maybe it is a catholic school thing and they were from a feeder school, or like someone else said they were their own kids.

I agree with one of the earlier post that this happens at many schools. I think what is so ironic about this, is that NewCath seems to handle this situation as well as any. They have 2 state championships out of the last 3 in Football. They have been one of the top 3 or 4 teams in Basketball for the past 5 years, and i believe they have a couple Baseball Regional titles as well. This all for a relatively small school.

You actually raise an interesting question. When a school has an open gym, can anyone from any school attend that open gym?

Sorry if this is off the topic or should be in another thread.

Do you not think that playing football has not hampered Jake Haas, Mac Franzen and Logan Neff this year. Not saying they should be starting, but Haas rarely plays and Franzen is relegated to pretty much JV only and Neff barely gets off the bench in the JV games. Sounds like 91 may be on to something. Perhaps statements are not being made out loud, but rather they are being made through the actions of the coaching staff.

Great question, but what has it hampered? Has it hampered their basketball development? I would have to think so. You can't go from August to December and not shoot a basketball and catch up w/ very skilled players who have been doing it all year. Has it hampered their value in the coaches eyes only b/c they played football? I very seriously doubt it. Grant has started football players every year but this one. This is just one of those groups where the kids committed to basketball, worked hard, and are reaping the rewards. So what do you do? Who should those three guys play over? To go back to the point of the thread, who from the basketball team would help the football team? Could this be just kids deciding that they want to play only one sport? I mean, your school has had great success in football while allowing them to play other sports, right?

It has been said that Coach Eviston and Coach Brannen had a very candid discussion regarding the football players at NewCath. Coach Brannen was the person that started the conversation. Does anyone recall Coach Brannen's quote in the newspaper regarding football players prior to the basketball season beginning...while Gray, Franzen, Haas, and Neff are preparing for the state title. There are up and coming kids giving up football due to the perception that is out in the public regarding the NewCath basketball team and how kids that play football are treated differently because they are not attending all summer workouts, etc. It is what it is, perception is reality!

Your whole post is an assumption that the kids in question even want to play sports in college. Just because YOU think a kid is better served playing football doesn't mean he should play football. Believe it or not everybody doesn't like football and some kids simply like the game of basketball better than football. Yes. It's that simple.

Dale invited two Red Devils to come into the locker room at halftime what is that. And no they did not live in FT.

Keep trying. The shoe is now firmly on the other foot and you want to keep trying to deflect it in another direction. I am sure that is why those two Red Devils chose HHS over NCC, because they toured that nasty locker room. I am sure they do not pay any tuition either right?

I am just curious to see what happens with the current frosh class at NCC and we will get a pretty good gauge on if what is being claimed in this thread actually has some teeth or not. Only time will tell I guess.

kids from feeder and their own.

kids from feeder and their own.

If Jimmy was involved at all or any of the other NCC coaches, I have to believe that there are some questions of whether or not this is allowed. Then again, maybe not.
