Ok so which one of the varsity coaches do you have an axe to grind with?

All excellent answers, the one in bold hits it square in the face though.

Isn't that kind of unrealistic for a fairly small school like NCC (or BW or HC for that matter)? I know some of the large schools take that attitude , but when you have about 900 males on your campus , you can get a way with it. Sometimes I think the utra-competitive sports culture is taking some joy out of HS sports.

Well......what is the major cause because.....speaking for myself, I have no clue what the major cause is.

This is going to circle back around to the same discussion about football players not being available to practice/play 12 months a year like the basketball only kids, and the basketball coaches encouraging the boys to play only one sport. I said "encouraging" not forcing.

Dual sport athletes that play football must concentrate solely on football for 6 months each year. That is 6 months they are not improving their basketball skills. The basketball kids work with the coaches throughout the offseason, improve their game and standing in the program, and are shown the love come basketball season. It is not unique to NCC. What is unique to NCC is the time and energy that all the coaches, even the assistant coaches put in with the kids for the entire 12 months of the year.

I can think of 2 current NCC basketball/football players that were excellent basketball players through their freshmen years. The time they spend on the football field (where both are very successful) is stunting their basketball growth. It is a fact. Others that are concentrating on bball only are passing them by. It happens at every school.

I know.................I was being more sarcastic as I feel this is an agenda thread...................But I agree 100% with you.

Trust me when I tell you, I do know what it takes lol. I'm not trying to single him out, he was just an example. Why close the door on any opportunity? Lets be honest, kids have no idea at the age of 15-22 what they want or whats best for them. We all have friends that say, "I shoulda played this, I shoulda done that", "I wish someone would have told me". Well, I'm sure someone did, you just didn't listen.

I agree with a lot of what your are saying. I have always thought he should have tried football. If you do know what it takes to play pro sports then good for you. You are a very small percentage. I agree that on the outside its easy for us to see what kids may or may not be reallly good at but at the end of the day its what they choose...right or wrong.

Many of the NCC basketball players also play a fall sport, just not all of them play football. McDonald, Seibert, Dupont, Bueter and Devoto all played golf. Haas, Franzen and Gray played football and Freppon played soccer. With Pangallo playing baseball, doesn't that leave only Schulte, Rawe, Verkamp and Dawson as "Basketball Only" athletes? Does Weyer play baseball also?

THIS. I challenge you to find another group of coaches that do this.

Hell, just this Sunday I watched as 3 of the Pangallo brothers and 5 former NewCath hoopsters gave lessons to a group of 7th & 8th graders that will be making their way to the "hill". The amount of time that former NewCath grads "give back" is mind boggling.

I don't have an agenda or an axe to grind. Referring to another reply. If the kids were choosing on their own without being told "you won't play", meaning playing basketball, then I could agree with you. NCC has 2 state championships in 3 years, so it's not hurting the program lol.

Sometimes coaches forget that it's not about them, it's about the kids. I know for a fact that the football coaches encourage the kids to play everything and anything that interests them. Wish some of the others would follow suit. Seems there are a few on here taking offense to this lol.

So....you are saying that the basketball coaches are encouraging athletes not to play? Look I take no offense to your statements but you should come out and just say them instead of asking questions and playing coy. I have no affiliation with NCC at all but do find your accusations rather fascinating.

This is absolute bologna. Grant waits on football players EVERY SINGLE YEAR, I would be absolutely amazed if a basketball coach said this to a kid, if they did you private message me who it was, and ill go straight to the source and find out if it's true. Until then you appear very much like you have an ax to grind. Whether you say you do not or not. If I don't get a message or a reply we'll know you're full of it. Ball is in your court.

I have a very hard time believing that Grant sat anyone down and said, "If you don't commit to the program year-round, you will not play." It was never that way up there, and I can't believe that Grant, a guy that I went through school with, would throw this out there. Who did he tell that to that to who hasn't gotten to play this year? Who from the football team is a better PG than Pangallo, 2G than Beuter, 3 than Seibert, 4 than Schulte, and 5 than McDonald? Who? Who from the basketball team would make the football team better than it was? Pangallo, as WR, for sure. You also have to remember that he watched his cousin break his leg making a catch against Ryle in '05 and probably doesn't want to risk missing basketball time. McDonald? Maybe, I don't know what kind of tempermant he has. He seems aggressive enough, he has the size. Then who?

You seem to be just starting trouble. Football is fine on the Hill. You know this better than almost anyone. Why worry about basketball or players picking one or the other.?

I find this whole thread very interesting. Kind of reminds me how things were back in the day at Highlands. Will be interesting to see how this pans out for kids on the frosh team that played both basketball and football pretty well this past fall like Erik Anderson, Jacob Smith, Josh Schneider and Griffin McHugh just to name 4 of the 5 frosh starters. If Brannen and Co. are indeed putting on the heat for these kids to not play football then they would be left with Ben Weyer as the only impact player in that class. Be interesting to hear more thoughts on this from those involved up on the hill.

Do you not think that playing football has not hampered Jake Haas, Mac Franzen and Logan Neff this year. Not saying they should be starting, but Haas rarely plays and Franzen is relegated to pretty much JV only and Neff barely gets off the bench in the JV games. Sounds like 91 may be on to something. Perhaps statements are not being made out loud, but rather they are being made through the actions of the coaching staff.

Curious to know if this is allowed or is this considered a form of recruiting? Maybe I am just asking a dumb question as I do not know the answer.

I dont doubt that coaches put a little pressure on kids to only focus on basketball. I think a big part of it it basketball strength and football strenght is WAY different. Mcdonals for example is a fine golfer and basketball player, he has a shot to play at the next level. If you put him on the football field IMO he would be soft. Its a whole different mental state on the field than the hardwood. In the late 90's during some down years of NewCath football there were several yound men who played basketball and not football that could have helped make a difference on the football field but didnt have the football "knock someones head off" mentality. Coaches do get in kids heads about working all year on one sport and all it takes is one kid to go for it it then he gets a few of his buddies to join in. It is what it is.
