Why are NCC basketball players not playing football?

Featured Replies

I'm a highlands guy and I respect your comment. But lest be realistic here if football was like basketball where there are no classes highlands wouldn't of won all those state championships. One word SHAMROCKS. It is harder to win in basketball and baseball state championships in the state of Kentucky. IMO

They might not have 22, but they'd still have more than anyone else. Everyone only remembers back 3 years. 4 years ago Trinity got smoked by Cincy X and Highlands owns X the next week. Trinity had a loaded class that just graduated. They're not that much better than Highlands most years. You'll see Trinity come back to the pack now.

Winning the region is the main goal in basketball. Yes it's tough, but you only need a few good players. Small schools beat bigger schools in basketball all the time. Much different than football where numbers are a bigger issue. You get one great player and it doesn't much matter how big your school is. I didn't say one time that NCC didn't win the state championship. I said they didn't win ANYTHING. If you don't win the region, you haven't won anything in basketball. They have 1 9th region title in 25+ years.

That's either a stretch or a major insult to Highlands football program. Highlands football program has 22 state championships. NCC has had a few decent teams on the basketball court the last few years. They've had some good players and some exciting games. They are one of the best teams in the 9th region several years running. But, what have they won? The only have 1 regional title in the last 25+ years. That was over a decade ago. That's a ton of good players over the years that left without a title. Hardly on the level of Highlands football where every kid is leaving with a fist full of rings. I "liken" NCC basketball to Boone county's football ball program. A few good runs here and there, but never reached the pinnalce.

Let me clarify.

The year round aspect of NCC hoops I liken to the same commitment of the Highlands football program.

Back to the thread topic.

Will Neff, Gray and Franzen even play hoops next year? Franzen will likel be recruited in football so he May forego his Sr yr.

Not sure of the other two but from what I saw in one JV game, they clearly Look like they are footballers playing hoops.

Will the Breds need them after they lose 4 of there top 8 players to graduation?

Next yrs projected starters are McDonald 6'6, Schulte 6'7, Weyer 6'5, Pangallo 5'9. Who plays the 2 spot?

It has to be a Zimmerman or another Pangallo...LOL

Didn't NewCath win the All A Classic this year? That would be the equivalent of a 1A/2A State Championship in Football. How many times have they won the All A Classic?

Twice.

I don't know how many times they won that. I don't pay much attention to it. The teams who win it are usually good enough to compete for a title in the regular regional as NCC is this year.

It's just another tourney. Is is more prestigeous than say the Lloyd Tourney or the Ashland Invitational? I'd say there's better teams in both of the above. It might be more prestigeous than winning A or AA football in the 6 class system. I'm no fan of the 6 class system or the small tourney. I've never seen a game of it. Of course, I didn't attend a small school, so I don't have the appreciation for it. The one thing it did do was satisfy the small guys enough to leave the Sweet 16 alone. That's why I hope they keep having the A tourney. Don't ruin the Sweet 16 so everyone feels like they can get a ribbon. The tourney still hasn't helped the teams it was designed for and the ones who were instrumental in getting the tourney started.

Several issues, playing football is tough work. Some kids are not enamored with the physical toll it takes on you. Most of the kids would get put on the line, not glamour positions. Basketball is much more fun than football in those circumstances to kids. That said, it couldn't hurt for some parents to recognize and advise their kid that there is not a big call for 6'5 centers who can't jump at the DI hoops level. Think of Giesler or Thelen, they had football bodies. Wasted playing hoops, no, but could have taken their game to a higher level in football.

Geisler played football, didn't want to do so in college, and didn't. He did get a DI basketball scholarship, so he didn't exactly make a bad decision.

So whats the story on Geisler? Is he on NKU's roster? Why Sud he leave Jacksonville?

Yes, but he has to sit a year, which is this one. He played a little last year, typical for an average Frosh. I saw him on Thanksgiving. He's slimmed down.

No gurantees for any kind of atheletic scholly, period. Play what you love, and enjoy the high school ride. While at it, focus on the academics and ACT scores to get your college scholly.

Lol. I'm a Highlands Football Fan. It is amazing what the football Coaches and Players have accomplish. Baseball and Basketball in Kentucky is just hard to win State Titles. I'm just a fan of high school sports and want Highlands and Newcath to succeed. Have friends in both Schools that will last forever.

You also overlook the fact that the highlands coaches are "advising" their football players not to play other sports.

Your whole post is an assumption that the kids in question even want to play sports in college. Just because YOU think a kid is better served playing football doesn't mean he should play football. Believe it or not everybody doesn't like football and some kids simply like the game of basketball better than football. Yes. It's that simple.

Well said, and I can buy that as an excuse not to play the sport. Its high school, if you like it, play, if you dont like it, then dont play. its that simple. Where I take issue is, when coaches pressure the players not to play other sports for fear of some sort of punishment. Also, parents with unrealistic goals or dreams about their kid playing sports at the college level.

I agree with what you say in this quote. I still would like to know who Grant has punished or threatened w/ punishment for playing football. Was it an issue w/ summer team camps and summer football? Again, w/ Grant's experience at the school and background there, I can't believe that he would punish a 2 sport player. NewCath athletics cease to exist w/out them.
