  1. Good to see these 2 seniors contributing to the Breds after sitting out of baseball for a couple of years. Pangallo and Gray, 2 names you will continue to hear about leading the Breds in baseball...glad to hear both are getting the opportunity to contribute! Curious to know why they both are not playing regularly at this level...
  2. Young Coach with a great opportunity in the public sector! Win, win for the Brannen Family and Walton Verona.
  3. Congrats to Coach Dawn, looking forward to the changes that take place at NCC with a very talented group of players currently attending NCC and the years to come. The intensity will increase, watch out 9th Region!
  4. J-Lo can still let it go on a rope! Hopefully he is going to get paid a decent amount of money doing what he loves to do. Good luck and much success to Jared. I suggest turning down the volume on the video, the music is awful!
  5. Wouldn't this require a change of residence? Public to public??
  6. What is there to argue about? I assume you are referring to the statement about Anost over shadowing Lyon last season with that being his/Anost first full year of football...one doesn't need to watch film when you see it live on Friday nights. Regarding football knowledge, you do not have to play in the NFL to have the knowledge to evaluate players. It is what it is... Back to what this thread is about...NewCath being competitive this year, NewCath will compete as they always have. I think the big question is the QB spot, who fills this position will probably determine the offense NewCath will run, etc. If Pangallo returns, he is a athlete/competitor and will be a kid that NewCath cannot keep off the field regardless of the position(s). Offensively NewCath will work out the kinks prior to the District run and will need to rely on a variety of Breds to make a run through the District one game at a time.
  7. There is nothing to debate, teams/players feared him...it is what it is.
  8. Hope the Brooks kid stays healthy! Both Moore and Brooks bring a lot to the field and will continue to be key factors in the Breds success along with many others.
  9. Seniors to be, Sutkamp and Meeks were exceptional last season. With that said, there are several Juniors to be that will need to fulfill assignments on both sides of the ball and they contributed on the varsity level last season. Gray on Special Teams & receiver Hoover on the o-line & DE Neff on the defensive side of the ball, DE, DT, LB and Special Teams...not sure where he will be on the offensive side of the ball Weilen(sp) o-line. At DE, Anost(sp) was the best run defender and pass rusher...this kid got better each and every week. Lyon must get stronger to become the best run defender and pass rusher at DE his senior year.
  10. The Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic is a statewide basketball tournament for the smallest 125 high schools within the commonwealth of Kentucky based on student enrollment for the grades 9-12 as verified through Kentucky Department of Educations records on October 1st of each year. The winners from the 16 boys’ regional tournaments along with the 16 girls’ regional tournament champions will advance to the statewide tournament held in Frankfort. Of the 123 Class "A" schools that are members of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, 121 boys' teams and 122 girls' teams have committed to participate in this year's Touchstone Energy All "A" Basketball Classic. In 2011-2012, the All "A" Classic will provide over 15,000 smaller school students wit the opportunity to actively participate in a statewide volleyball competition, a scholarship program, an art competition, statewide baseball tournament, statewide fast pitch softball tournament, and a cheerleading competition. The Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic strengthened its commitment to academics and education in 1996-97 by providing scholarship opportunities open to all students of Class "A" schools. In the first year of the scholarship program, twelve $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Class "A" seniors planning to attend any Kentucky institution of higher education. The number of scholarships increased to a total of $70,000 for 2002-2003. In addition, other scholarships are presented annually as part of the statewide art competition. This year the total amount of scholarships provided will exceed $900,000.
  11. From the paper: FRANKFORT - When the buzzer sounded Sunday, giving the Newport Central Catholic boys' basketball team a 75-54 Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic state championship victory over Bardstown, Thoroughbreds coach Grant Brannen received a hug from his father. Another quote from the paper: FRANKFORT - An uncharacteristic hot hand from the perimeter helped the Bishop Brossart girls' basketball team get off to a good start in its first-round Touchstone Energy All 'A' Classic State Tournament game against Murray and then some characteristic calm under pressure helped it hold on to win. State Championship victory!
  12. Not a dog in the fight; Campbell Cty Native, avid sports fan, and not a bad experience with NewCath. Friends with many current families attending NewCath. IMO there needs to be some change within the program, not Grant in particular. I agree, they have a very talented group of kids returning.
  13. We do agree on one thing, kids do miss shots and sometimes they do not! When did Schulte ever hit a mid range jumper all year? Nick did not shoot consistently all year, played great defense 99% of the time. This was probably the worst performance out of Schulte all year, unfortunatley Grant did NOT leave Weyer in the game to help spread out the Holmes Defense to open up that Inside / Outside Game Grant established this year! Weyer can guard the Holmes players, Shulte is the one that struggled with that...foul trouble. Back to the adjustments, can you honestly admit that Grant has made adjustments throughout games to adjust to what the other team was doing on offense and/or defense? Name them! NCC ran the same sets all year, regardless if the chosen player was open or not...the back door alley oop pass...the entire region knew when that was going to take place wheter Nick was open or not...and even when he was hobbled in the All A. Now you gotta admit, your best defender coming off a severe ankle injury and you run that play to him, pretty stupid if you ask me! Regarding last year regional final, McDonald should have been involved in the game so much earlier than he was. Grant had not quite figured out the inside / outside game at that time...just launch up the three pointer all night. Unfortunately Brady was worn out...felt bad for that kid! I never said nor do I believe a person can walk off the street and coach the team...I do believe Grant needs to be smarter and/or improve his basketball IQ...not worry about pleasing certain families so much, etc. I can give him a starting point, maybe he needs to begin with getting more up and coming younger coaches involved like Ken Collopy. There are a number of lifers sitting on the bench, give a pat on the rear to a kid here and there...that is about it. Did you notice how involved the entire coaching staff is at Holmes during games??? That takes place because they all work to prepare the team, watch film, and ensure all players are constantly working on the fundamentals of basketball...not scrimmaging everyday in practice! Change is not a bad thing, the NewCath family seems to be afraid to make changes...it needs to begin with evaluating what each of the 6-7 coaches bring to the table to improve the skill set of the NCC Team Players...all good guys, but the game has definitely passed many of them up. Mexi, love your NewCath Spirit and Pride, sometimes it is hard for individuals like you to trully evaluate, look at the big picture, and admit when change is needed. Not saying Grant needs to go, but he needs to evaluate his staff to make changes, bring some new energy and blood to the table to get the best out of his talented teams that he continues to have. Maybe Grant is tired like McDonald was at the end of the game on Tuesday!
  14. Are you still considering Grant a "premiere" coach? A "premiere" coach would have left Ben Weyer in the game, at least given him more minutes, to keep the Holmes bigs from hanging in the paint because Ben is an outside threat. This would have opened the middle up more for the inside / outside game, McDonald to do his work. Grant made zero adjustments and/or changes from the last game. The Holmes Coaches were calling out every "set" that NCC ran. A program that has all the talent that NCC has had for the last 3 years should not lose as Grant has in the regional tournament. Kidz are gong to miss shots, have turnovers, etc. but a coach must also be able to make adjustments throughout the game to put his kidz/team in the best possible position to win the ball game when the clock hits zero...this has not happened in the big games Grant has coached. Grants sets did not work the second time around due to his lack of making changes and adjustments based upon game film, scouting, etc.
  15. The point of my post is, yes NCC Kids feel the pressure to give something up if you want to be any type of player on the NCC Team...open gyms have been around for years, Mexi if you did not attend due to participating in another sport, was that held over your head regarding playing time, making the team, etc back in the day? This leads to players such as Zach Pangallo not playing football. Would also be nice to have McDonald, Schulte, & Josh V. playing on the gridiron as well. Not sure if the later 3 have the physical toughness to get it done, but sure would be nice to see them give it a shot. Playing football would also improve their physical play in basketball. It does not take a "premier coach" to figure out the inside outside game. Anyone with limited basketball knowledge could figure that out with the size of this lineup!
  16. Have the head coach positions at Holmes and Newport been filled to date? Any news about number of applicants, interview dates, etc?
  17. The current group of starting basketball players at NCC have not played football in years, aside from Pangallo. As Grant stated, i have have my basketball players back in November in the paper, and eluded to he is not waiting on the football player or does not need them to win games. It will be interesting to see how this all goes down on the hill with football / basketball...the football players took offense to his comment, as JOAT said, it will be interesting to see how it all works out with the current freshman class. The players do have open gym / summer camp hanging over their heads by the coaches...pressure to participate even if they are playing for the high school team baseball team in state tourney, playing on summer baseball team, and / or preparing for football. Word is many kids are not playing summer baseball due to the fact that they feel the pressure to focus on basketball. Hightchew did play all three, was / still is a very special athlete...Grant knew he had to have him on the floor at all times...Brady was not the type of kid that you could pressure to do anything, he was going to do what was best for him....Tourney time now, if Grant makes it to the region and loses again will he step down? IMO...Coach Dawn would good the most out of the football/basketball players! Regarding Highlands players feeling the pressure from coaches, I have no doubts there is pressure there...I believe this is pressure the kids put on themselves more so than the coaches. The tradition of HHS Football and the fact that the kids know there is someone looking over their shoulder to take a snap or two away from that starter and / or step into that starting position. They are determined to play and continue the State Championship Tradition.
  18. Wow, I knew MC was a top team in the state, didn't see this coming against against CCH. Is MC a physical team, I assume they are very athletic.
  19. Congrats to the Breds on this big last second victory tonight...this win may help them on the road through Highlands during Districts. Good luck to Coach Stamm and the Lady Cougars, have no doubts Coach will have his team ready to claw its way through the District Tourney.
  20. This definitely happens in AAU Tournamnets, however, I believe at the high school level Coaches want to win the District Championship...anything is possible in the Regional Tournaments whether you are facing favorites NewCath or Trinity!
  21. Definitely a Great basketball atmosphere tonight! Grundy and Gosa were getting it done...unfortunately down the stretch my Tigers could not get it done...hope to see this match up in the Regional Tourney. Good luck to both teams!
  22. Is the Frosh Weyer no longer getting many minutes at the varsity level? Earlier during the season he was coming off the bench quick and early. I see he has two points in the box score, is his shot not falling as of late? Seibert has cooled off since the Holmes game according to recent box scores, is this due to less shooting? If the Breds are going to make a run through the District, they will need a healthy McDonald and consistent scoring out of Seibert and Weyer.
