Week 0 is officially in the books! What a perfect weekend it was for football. A couple of teams showed that they were better than we thought and some may not have been as good as expected. It’s just the first week though so we all shouldn’t overreact one way or the other.

 

1. Frederick Douglass (5A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: After much drama surrounding the departure of WR Dekel Crowdus to IMG Academy, the Broncos had a slow start but eventually got on track and took care of fellow FCPS opponent Bryan Station 43-0. QB Josh McClurg had a solid evening going 5/7 for 94 yards and added another 90 yards on the ground. Collectively the team had 246 yards on the ground and the defense flexed it’s muscle giving up only 107 yards.

 

This week: Frederick Douglass plays host to Tates Creek (6A, 1-0) in another FCPS matchup. Their defense will be challenged by Tates Creek QB and Cornell commit Luke Duby.

 

2. Scott County (5A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: The welcoming of cross-town rival, Great Crossing, wasn’t so welcome. The Cardinals took over the nest and ran wild for a final score of 72-7. Philip Garner led the ground attack tallying 220 yards on 7 carries along with 4 TD. Bronson Brown added another 128 yards on a mere 4 carries and a TD. Scott County accumulated a total of 470 yards rushing and 541 total yards while giving up just 91.

 

This week: Scott County visits former district foe Lafayette (6A, 0-1). Lafayette should provide more of a challenge for the Cards in this one.

 

3. Boyle County (4A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: The starters played just 3 drives before Coach Smith started making substitutions. Up 29-0 5 minutes into the first quarter, Iroquois requested a running clock the rest of the game. The second half was played with 8 minute quarters. The final score was 36-0. Not much to say about this game except that this was handled with class by all the parties involved.

 

This week: Boyle hosts it’s bowl game playing Bullitt Central (5A, 1-0) in the second game of the evening. Bullitt Central is coming off of a 34-12 victory over Seneca and a respectable 7-5 campaign last season. I look for the Boyle starters to get more playing time in this one.

 

4. Lexington Catholic (4A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: It’s not over until the fat lady sings, or until the final buzzer sounds that is. Lexington Catholic overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit to score 21 unanswered points in the second half in their victory over Pulaski County. Beau Allen led the offense going 22/32 for 276 yards with a TD. The Knights defense gave up a lot through the air but forced 3 turnovers and did enough to shut out Pulaski County in the second half.

 

This week: Lexington Catholic plays host to TC Howe from Indianapolis in the Bluegrass Bowl. On doing some research of Howe, it seems on paper that this will be a good game for the Knights to work on areas of weakness.

 

5. Anderson County (4A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: the Bearcats took on Spencer County coming out victorious 42-13. QB Jagger Gillis provided 131 yards and 2 TD through the air and an additional 2 TD with his legs. Leading target was Kynan Russell who had 9 receptions for 82 yards and a TD. Zach Labhart made some noise in his return with a 60 yard TD reception and a blocked punt returned for another TD.

 

This week: Anderson plays host to Madison Central (6A, 0-1). Central is looking to get in the win column for the first time this season while Anderson is looking to move to 2-0 prior to their rivalry game against Mercer County.

 

6. Taylor County (3A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: The ground attack from Taylor County proved to be too much for the Wolverines of Western Hills. The Cardinals racked up all 383 yards of offense on the ground en route to a 37-8 victory. Leading the way was Tre Goodin with 14 carries for 209 yards and a TD. Wes Oliver added an additional 15 carries for 141 yards and 3 TD. The defense had a great night as well giving up just 104 yards.

 

This week: Taylor County pays a visit to fellow 3A opponent Larue County (0-1). Whoever can win in the trenches will come out the victor in this one as both teams have run oriented offenses.

 

7. Henry Clay (6A, 0-1)

 

Last week recap: looking to avenge last years 24-7 playoff loss to Simon Kenton the Blue Devils, despite 5 turnovers, fared a better this go around but still came up short by a final score of 38-27. The Devils couldn’t contain Simon Kenton RB Erik Brown who had 198 yards on 31 carries and a TD. Henry Clay showed a balanced offense gaining 194 yards through the air and another 160 on the ground.

 

This week: The schedule doesn’t get any easier this week. Louisville St. X (6A, 1-0) comes to town for a Bluegrass Bowl matchup. Can Henry Clay pull off an upset of one of the Louisville “Big 3”? Tune in Friday to find out.

 

8. Franklin County (4A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: The Flyers had control for majority of the game even though the final score of 35-28 does not indicate that. East Jessamine would score every time Franklin got the lead to two scores. The Nick Broyles to Fred Farrier connection looks to have continued from last season as they were clicking on all cylinders. Broyles continues to be a threat with his legs rushing for over 100 yards.

 

This week: County rival Western Hills (3A, 0-1) makes the cross town trip Friday night. The Flyer defense will be happy to see that Wandale Robinson is no longer in the Western Hills backfield. Rivalry games are always fun and the score is usually closer than what it should be on paper.

 

9. Lexington Christian Academy (2A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: LCA came out with victory against a solid 3A Moore squad 34-16. Andrew Long had an impressive night from his LB spot, 12 tackles, 3 Tackles for loss and a Sack. Xavier Brown had 9 carries for 129 yards and 2 TD and Will Vernon had a couple of receptions for 85 yards and a TD to lead the Eagles on the offensive side of the ball.

 

This week: In what may be the toughest game of the year for LCA, they travel to the Pike County bowl to take on 3A powerhouse, Belfry (1-0). While the Eagles may not leave with a victory, this game should serve as a nice RPI booster come playoff time.

 

10. Campbellsville (1A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: 3A Casey County proved to be no match for Campbellsville falling 49-13. QB Arren Hash had a good night completing 15/21 for 305 yards and 4 TD. His leading target was Blase Wheatley who had 3 receptions for 118 yards and a TD. The Tiger defense did not relinquish many yards to the run, giving up only 43 yards.

 

This week: Campbellsville takes on another 3A foe in Adair County (0-1). Adair lost a close one to Russell County last week and should provide a good test for the Tigers this week.

 

Teams 11-15

 

11. Danville (2A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: The Admirals put up a dominant eye opening 48-14 victory over 4A John Hardin. Sophomore Caleb Burns had an outstanding evening in his first varsity start accumulating 227 yards and 5 TD on 21 carries. Danville has been said to be rebuilding this season but it looks as if they have reloaded with the sophomore class. Sophomore QB Brady Morse had an efficient night going 10/12 94 yards and a TD.

 

This week: Danville is on the road to take on the Tigers of Bardstown (3A, 0-1). Can the Admirals prove they are a force in central Kentucky or will last week just be a one hit wonder?

 

12. Mercer County (3A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: The Mercer defense came out with the shutout in their 21-0 win over West Carter. Brent McKitric led the Titan D with 9 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Offensively Malachi Yulee had 104 yards on 19 carries with a TD. The Titan offense moved the ball very well but couldn’t convert when the field got short. Coach Buchanan will likely address that in practice this week.

 

This week: Mercer travels to Boyle County to take on Allen County-Scottsville (4A, 0-1) in the Rebel Bowl. The Titans hope to move to 2-0 to set up their rivalry matchup with Anderson County in a couple of weeks.

 

13. Larue County (3A, 0-1)

 

Last week recap: Tough night for the Hawks as they lost their season opener to Glasgow by a score of 35-13. Larue didn’t have an answer for Glasgow RB Nick Mitchell who ran for 166 yards and 4 TD. Matthew Lewis with 10 carries for 96 yards and a TD was the offensive stat leader for the Hawks.

 

This week: an opportunity to show they are one of the top 10 teams in Central Kentucky awaits Larue this week when Taylor County (3A, 1-0) comes to town.

 

14. Tates Creek (6A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: Creek had a strong showing in the opener coming out victorious 39-7 over Madison Southern. Star QB Luke Duby had himself a night. Completing 18/22 passes for 338 yards and 4 TD. Miles Thomas proved to be Duby’s favorite target with 4 receptions, 128 yards and 2 TD. Marcus Bosley led all tacklers with 10 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

 

This week: Creek goes out to The Farm to take on current CKY #1 Frederick Douglass (5A, 1-0). This is a prime opportunity for Tates Creek to prove it belongs among the best in Lexington and all of central Kentucky.

 

15. Lincoln County (4A, 1-0)

 

Last week recap: The Patriots played tough physical football both offensively and defensively in their 21-14 victory over Woodford County. Nick Harris went 8/14 157 yards and 2 TD for Lincoln. Defensively the leading tackler was Clayton Davis accumulating 11 tackles.

 

This week: Lincoln looks to move to 2-0 for the first time under 2nd year head coach Spencer Crutchfield playing host to East Jessamine (5A, 0-1). Lincoln will be challenged and must improve on last week if they want to come out as victors.

17. Dunbar (6A, 1-0) Last week, Beat North Laurel 35-26. This week at Boone County

18. Madison Central (6A, 0-1) Last week lost to Conner 27-6. This week at Anderson County.

19. Washington County (2A, 1-0) Last week beat Nelson County 56-0. This week vs Atherton.

20. Russell County (4A, 1-0) Last week beat Adair County 28-25. This week at Green County.

 

Teams on the rise

 

1. Danville- out to prove they have reloaded with their sophomores. Up 2 spots to #11.

2. Lincoln County- enters the top 15 with their physical win over Woodford County.

 

Teams on the decline

 

1. Larue County- took a sound defeat at the hands of Glasgow. Maybe the loss of Anthony Atkins hurts more than expected.

2. Madison Central- outmanned by NKY 6A for Conner in the opener. They need to win soon to stay in the top 20.

Lexington Catholic vs Pulaski county

At halftime it looked as if Pulaski County would end up running away with the victory up 14-0. Instead Beau Allen and Lexington Catholic would mount a second half comeback pulling off the victory with a final score of 21-14.

Lincoln County vs East Jessamine

 

In a non district matchup this one looks to be a physical game between two evenly matched teams. Ranked 15 & 16 in the Central Kentucky rankings this one should turn out to be a dandy.
