Covington Catholic Record Book - Recent Changes

Recommended Posts

Covington Catholic's record book has seen a few notable changes since head coach Scott Ruthsatz took over the school's basketball program in the 2011/12 season - most notably due to the presence of players Cole VonHandorf and Nick Ruthsatz. Not only are they the #1 and #2 scorers, respectively, in the school's 1,000 Point Club, but the two of them also combine for possession of nine of the Colonels Basketball Program's thirty-one total individual records. That should come as little surprise if you take into consideration the fact that Nick and Cole were both absolutely integral in leading Cov Cath to their 2014 basketball state championship.

Most Free Throws (Single Game) - 19; Nick Ruthsatz; 2012 vs. Louisville St. Xavier

Most Points Scored (Single Season) - 763; Nick Ruthsatz; 2013/14

Most Points Scored (Career) - Cole VonHandorf; 2014-17

Highest PPG Average (Career) - 19.8; Nick Ruthsatz; 2011-14

Most Field Goals (Career) - 809; Cole VonHandorf; 2014-17

Most Free Throws (Career) - 515; Nick Ruthsatz; 2011-14

Best Free Throw % (Career) - 83.9%; Cole VonHandorf; 2014-17

Most Games Played (Career) - 141; Cole VonHandorf; 2014-17

Most 3-Pointers (Career) - 213; Nick Ruthsatz; 2011-14

It's also worth noting that Bo Schuh (2012-15) is yet another member of the 2014 state championship team to make his way into the Covington Catholic 1,000 Point Club, with his 1,089 career points.

This season, Cov Cath has found their place among the top 5 boys basketball teams in the state for the majority of the season. Once again, rising out of that success, there are two new members to the school's 1,000 point club: Iowa Hawkeyes commit CJ Fredrick, and Christian Brothers commit Aiden Ruthsatz.

An addition to those two making the millenium mark, once again, Covington Catholic has basketball records looking to be broken:

Single-Season records on pace to be broken:

Jake Walter has gone 117-157 on field goals this season – good for 74.5%. That would
shatter
the current Cov Cath single-season record of 62.9% held by Jay McCoy (1984/85).

Nick Thelen is also on pace to best the current field goal percentage mark. He’s 65-101 on the season – good for 64.4%.

CJ Fredrick is on pace for 98 made 3-pointers this season (35 games, assuming they play in the regional final) that would pass up the current single season record of 89 held by Nick Shipley (1992/93).

Aiden Ruthsatz is just on the fringe of also surpassing the made 3-pointers number. He is on pace for 88 made 3’s.

Aiden Ruthsatz is currently 89-99 from the foul line this season. That’s 89.9%, and would best the current single season mark of 88.5% also held by by Nick Shipley (1992/93).

Career records in jeopardy:

Jake Walter’s current career field goal percentage is 64.0% (235-367); this would best Jay McCoy’s record of 61.1% (1984-86).

Aiden Ruthsatz is on pace to take over record for career free throw percentage. He’s currently 222-261 or 85.1%. The current mark is held by Cole VonHandorf at 83.9% (2014-17).

CJ Fredrick:

Season: 749 pts (763 is record) – 14 points away

93 made 3’s (former record was 89)

21.5 ppg (current record is 25.4) – Not going to get there.

267 made FGs (current record 285) – 18 FGs away

Career: 1500 pts (currently 5th) – projecting to finish 4th, 3rd is out of reach

17.2 ppg (current record is 19.8) – Not going to get there. Will finish 3rd.

Ruthsatz:

Season: .902 FT% (111-123) – record is currently 88.5% - Has to miss 3 straight to dip below

Career: .856 FT% (244-285) – record is currently 84.0% - Has to miss 6 straight to dip below

Walter:

Season: .728 FG% (179-246) – record is currently 62.9% - This record is his.

Career: .654 FG% (298-456) – record is currently 61.1% - So is this one.

A couple items of note:

· This will be the team/class with the most individual records in the Covington Catholic basketball record book. Most of those are not cumulative (i.e. aided by playing more games than other teams/players in years past)

· This team has the potential to finish with more wins than any Covington Catholic senior class – currently at 117 (121 is the record. State finals appearance will break it.)
